Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 79: I Think I’m Being Held by a Man
Rory Linden wasn’t the least bit surprised to get a call from Miles Harrison.
They had known each other for twenty years.
Ever since he was a child, this young master had been easily forgiven for every mistake, with someone always there to clean up his messes.
This time would be no exception. Discovering that Lucy Shaw’s child wasn’t his... how could the young master possibly endure such an injustice? Breaking up and calling off the engagement were just standard procedure.
It was hardly surprising that he’d come crawling back.
She had already blocked several of his numbers. Who knew where he had gotten this new one?
"Young Master Harrison, I’ve been doing very well since leaving you. I don’t need your concern, nor do I care how you’re doing. So please, stop getting new numbers to call me, can you?"
Rory Linden’s tone was perfectly calm.
She didn’t rush to hang up, either. Instead, she waited for his reply.
"No!" Miles Harrison answered quickly. "Rory, even if we can’t be a couple anymore, after all these years, we can still be friends, right?"
Rory Linden felt a laugh bubbling up. They had known each other for twenty years.
Miles Harrison might have seen her as a tagalong, a personal servant, a study partner—but never, not once, as a friend.
The cool evening breeze tousled her hair.
Rory Linden stood by the roadside, gazing at the skyscrapers across the street as she spoke. "Young Master Harrison, I’ve never thought of us as friends. Perhaps we just have different ideas of what friendship means. At the very least, I would never treat my friends the way you’ve treated me."
There was silence on the other end. After a long pause, Miles Harrison finally said, "Rory, so you’re still mad at me, aren’t you?"
"Young Master Harrison, do I sound mad? I’ve said it before: the Harrington Family has been very good to me over the years. They gave me a place to live and an education, so it was only right that I treated you well and deferred to you." Rory Linden’s voice was even. "Alright, that’s enough. I’m blocking this number. Don’t contact me again."
As she said this, Miles Harrison was telling her not to hang up.
She pretended not to hear him and ended the call anyway.
With practiced ease, she blocked the number.
Rory Linden didn’t used to have a habit of blocking people’s numbers. Since breaking up with Miles Harrison, she had already blocked three of his.
When she looked up, Sean Harrison’s car was slowly approaching from a short distance away.
「 」
Rory Linden thought that would be the end of it.
The next day, just after she finished a surgery, she ran into Miles Harrison in the hallway.
He had been in a car accident earlier, which resulted in a mild concussion, so he needed to stay in the hospital for about a week for observation.
Today was his last day.
Rory Linden acted as if she hadn’t seen him and walked straight toward her office.
"Rory," Miles Harrison called out to her first. When she ignored him, he followed behind her. "Rory, Rory Linden, can we talk?"
Her office was just a few meters away.
To avoid making a scene with her personal affairs in front of her colleagues, she had no choice but to stop.
"Young Master Harrison, didn’t I make myself perfectly clear on the phone yesterday?" Rory Linden’s tone was placid.
"Rory, yesterday I—"
"Young Master Harrison, if you call me Rory Linden, I might be willing to stand here and listen to your nonsense for a few more minutes."
Rory Linden corrected his form of address once again.
"Fine, Rory Linden, Rory Linden." For once, Miles Harrison relented. "Last night, I thought carefully about what happened at the bar. You said you didn’t trip Lucy Shaw, and I..."
"Young Master Harrison, if you want to rehash what happened a month ago, don’t bother." Rory Linden cut him off immediately. "I’m on the clock. If you were my patient, I could discuss your condition with you. But I’m very busy and have no time for personal matters."
With that, she turned to walk to her office.
"Ro— Rory Linden, these things might not matter to you, but they’re very important to me. I think people should admit when they’ve done something wrong."
Miles Harrison blocked Rory Linden’s path, expressing his view.
Rory Linden finally couldn’t help but laugh out loud. "Young Master Harrison, congratulations. At the age of twenty-six, you’ve finally grasped a concept I understood when I was three."
She wasn’t surprised by this side of Miles Harrison at all.
When this young master fell down in elementary school, Evelyn Irving would slap the ground three times and say, "How dare you trip my son!"
"Yeah, go ahead and laugh at me. Laugh all you want. But I understand now, and I don’t think it’s too late."
His tone was full of self-assurance.
Rory Linden agreed, "Mm, that’s great."
Miles Harrison looked at her. "Rory Linden, I know I was immature before, but I’ll learn to be mature, bit by bit. I’ll learn how to treat you well, I—"
"Young Master Harrison," Rory Linden hastily cut him off. "I don’t need you to treat me well. I have a boyfriend to do that."
’At least, in the eyes of the Harrisons.’
’She and Sean Harrison were a couple.’
Miles Harrison naturally knew who this "boyfriend" was, and his face instantly darkened. "You’re really with my uncle?"
Rory Linden nodded.
Miles Harrison wasn’t surprised.
At his engagement party, the two of them had been quite intimate.
And they were always seen together at the hospital, sparking gossip among the doctors and nurses.
Whatever their relationship was, it definitely wasn’t just friendship.
"Last time, he picked out such expensive jewelry for you, a watch worth tens of millions. You must think he’s so good to you because he’s willing to spend money on you. But he’s just letting you borrow those things. Is that all it takes to have you wrapped around his finger? You just graduated a year ago. You’re no match for him."
Miles Harrison put on a profound, secretive air.
Rory Linden listened to him calmly before speaking. "Young Master Harrison, I don’t need you to tell me about my boyfriend. I have eyes, ears, and a heart. I can see, listen, and judge for myself."
"You—"
"Young Master Harrison, unlike you, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon. If I don’t work, my boss will have my head."
After speaking, Rory Linden turned and entered her office.
It was only when she sat down that she realized how calm she felt, unlike the last time when Evelyn Irving and Miles Harrison came one after another to bring up Nadia Willow.
’It’s true,’ she thought. ’It’s much more reassuring to reach a conclusion by thinking for yourself instead of listening to others.’
Just then, her phone chimed. DING-DONG.
Rory Linden glanced down and saw that although she had blocked Miles Harrison’s number, he could still send her text messages.
Miles Harrison: [My uncle is in love with Nadia Willow. You’ll find out soon enough.]
Rory Linden ignored the message and started looking up how to block texts from a specific number.
Unfortunately, she failed.
’Whatever.’
That night, Rory Linden was on duty.
She didn’t get home until after lunch the next day.
To avoid being unable to sleep that night, Rory Linden decided against taking a nap and instead sat down in the study to learn.
Medicine was a profession where you had to study and take exams until you were old.
Every year, there were various exams to deal with.
But studying really did make one drowsy.
Rory Linden didn’t know how long she had been studying before she unconsciously slumped over the desk and fell asleep.
She slept until she smelled a faint, woody cologne and felt her body and legs being lifted...
Groggy, she opened her eyes. The first thing that came into view was Sean Harrison’s... Adam’s apple?
Her brain took two seconds to process before she realized she was being carried in his arms!
