Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 238: "My Nephew Likes Her a Lot.
"Oh, he..."
Sherry was about to retort instinctively, but then his words registered. She froze, turning back to stare at him in horror.
Noah Sterling pulled his sleeve from her grasp and said,
"When it comes to the pressure to get married, you can run but you can’t hide. You’ll still have to see him when everyone is seated before the ceremony starts. Even if you leave today, do you really plan on calling your own father ’Uncle’ for the rest of your life?"
Sherry blinked, her mind going blank.
She sized Noah Sterling up and down. "Don’t tell me Sean Harrison sent you to seduce me," she asked, "trying to get me to be his mouthpiece?"
...
Noah Sterling looked utterly speechless.
Sherry knew she was wrong. "Then you’re into me?" she guessed again.
Noah’s expression remained unchanged. "I don’t like to date people in the same profession, especially not fellow lawyers who handle divorce cases. You see too much. The mutual scheming would be exhausting."
Sherry had to agree with that.
As a divorce lawyer, only a small part of her work involved drafting prenuptial agreements.
Most of it was handling divorce proceedings.
She’d handled so many cases, she thought she’d seen it all.
People who transferred all their assets before the wedding, leaving their spouse with nothing and even trying to take money *from* them, were considered the more "conscientious" ones.
She’d seen husbands sign loan agreements with their parents, only to make their ex-wives repay the "debt" after the divorce.
Or husbands who used their spouse’s identity to rack up enormous debts.
If she dated an ordinary guy, she could handle him easily enough without getting the short end of the stick.
But if she dated a lawyer...
She didn’t even want to think about it.
Sherry was still skeptical. "So why are you being so kind?" she asked Noah.
Noah shrugged. "You just helped me out, so consider this me returning the favor. Besides, I’m single. I can take a small hit and let you use me."
Sherry jabbed him with her elbow. "You’re taking a hit?! I’m the one losing out here! Your ex is one of the guests. I’ll probably have to help you chase her off later."
Noah smiled. "I’d be lying if I said that hadn’t crossed my mind."
Sherry rolled her eyes dramatically. "Buddy, be a little more sincere, would you? We’re not in court. Just say what’s on your mind."
"Fine, let’s both be sincere then," Noah said, laying out his condition. "Jane Jenkins isn’t going to let this go easily. I’ll probably need your help dealing with her for a while."
Sherry agreed. "Deal. You just have to play the part of my boyfriend. We’ll play the rest by ear."
The two had just struck their deal when Mr. Walsh walked over.
"Sherry, get over here!"
Mr. Walsh’s voice wasn’t loud, but it was thick with anger.
Sherry flinched and immediately shot Noah a pleading look.
Noah held out his hand. Without a moment’s hesitation, Sherry took it, grasping his hand tightly!
Mr. Walsh’s expression froze as he took in the scene.
"Lawyer Walsh, Sherry and I are actually together now. My apologies, it’s all been very recent, so we haven’t had the chance to tell you."
Noah’s tone was earnest and his expression was serious. He was completely convincing.
Mr. Walsh looked incredulous. "Lawyer Sterling, you and... Sherry?"
"That’s right! Dad, we’ve only been together a week. It’s not stable yet—we might break up in a few days for all we know—so we weren’t planning on telling anyone."
Sherry quickly interjected.
Mr. Walsh frowned and scolded Sherry, "You’re not a child anymore. If you’re going to date, be serious about it. Don’t talk about breaking up in a few days!"
Noah Sterling was the youngest of Celestria’s top ten lawyers.
His track record in criminal defense was impeccable and well-documented.
While Sherry was a partner at her firm, she "only" handled divorce cases.
To Mr. Walsh, Noah Sterling was a son-in-law he’d never even dared to hope for.
Sherry nodded. "I know, I know. I’ll try my best to hold on for a few more days."
Mr. Walsh was not at all pleased with his daughter’s attitude.
He looked at Noah. "Sherry’s been like this since she was a kid—very blunt, speaks her mind. But her heart is in the right place."
Noah said, "Yes, I know. Sherry has a very frank personality."
Sherry immediately protested, "I’m not a kid. What’s with this ’frank’ talk?"
"Sherry!" Mr. Walsh cut her off, then turned to Noah. "Lawyer Sterling, when are you free? We should all sit down for a meal together."
"Of course. I’m flexible," Noah agreed.
"That’s not necessary!" Sherry immediately objected. "Dad, we’ve only been together for a few days! Besides, *he* pursued *me*. I haven’t even made up my mind about him yet. You’re going to scare him off!"
Even more surprised, Mr. Walsh looked to Noah for confirmation.
To save face, Sherry squeezed Noah’s hand hard, signaling him to play along.
Noah smiled and nodded. "It’s true. I’m a bit more reserved, so I really like Sherry’s personality."
Still finding it all a bit hard to believe, Mr. Walsh decided not to disturb the two of them and left first.
The moment her father was out of earshot, Sherry flung Noah’s hand away. "Thank you, Lawyer Sterling. I shall be eternally grateful for your immense benevolence."
Noah let his hand fall to his side. "Don’t thank me just yet. We’re sitting at the same table."
"What?!" Sherry was dumbfounded. "Are you serious?"
Noah nodded. "I just saw the seating chart for that table. It has you and your father."
Wedding seating is arranged not just by the bride’s and groom’s sides, but also by social standing.
Noah’s reputation in the legal world was more prominent, and Sherry’s father was a respected senior in the field.
It was perfectly normal for them to be seated at the same table.
The thought of having to keep up the act made Sherry deflate like a punctured balloon.
"Well, let’s go take our seats then." 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
Sherry was tired of standing anyway.
As they approached their table, Sherry spotted Rory Linden and Sean Harrison standing by one of the tables in the front row.
Rory’s hand was linked gently through Sean’s arm. The two of them were standing there, chatting with a few other people.
They looked incredibly close.
And from the look on Rory’s face, she didn’t seem unwilling at all.
It wasn’t that Sherry needed Rory to completely cut ties with Sean Harrison.
She just remembered all the hardship her friend had gone through over the years and hated Sean for his heartlessness back then.
She tore her gaze away and turned to Noah. "Can you tell me what on earth Sean Harrison was thinking back then? It’s not like he had some terminal illness. Why did he have to be so cruel?"
Noah also glanced in Sean’s direction. "From what I know of him, once he’s decided something is the right course of action, he’ll do it immediately, no matter how difficult or risky. That personality is why he’s so successful today."
"Is dating the same as doing business?"
Sherry scoffed.
"It’s not that different. Still, I really hope they get back together."
"Why?"
Noah wore a helpless expression as he explained his predicament. "Because my nephew is completely smitten with her."
It took Sherry a second to process that. "Smitten with who?"
Noah said, "With Rory Linden."
