Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 157: Unsure If He’s Worthy of Having a Child
As an anesthesiologist, Evan Hollis often had to cover multiple surgeries, so it was normal for him to be called away for an urgent procedure.
It was just that... before coming down, Evan Hollis had told Rory Linden that his next surgery wasn’t for another forty minutes, so there was still plenty of time.
Evan Hollis waved at Rory Linden. "Dr. Linden, I’ll have to trouble you with the patient in bed 11. I’m heading up."
Before, he had always addressed Charlotte Rhodes as "Auntie."
But in front of Sean Harrison, he switched to calling her "the patient in bed 11." The change was so pointed it was obviously deliberate.
After Evan Hollis left, Rory Linden turned to Sean Harrison. "If you don’t want to go, I can go by myself."
"...I’ll go with you." Sean Harrison released his arm from around her and asked, "Is your arm any better?"
"Yes. It doesn’t hurt if it’s not touched. You were just using a bit too much force, so I felt a little pain."
Rory Linden explained earnestly. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Sean Harrison knew he had indeed been a little too forceful.
When he saw her with Evan Hollis, he couldn’t quite control his emotions, and the grip of his hand had been tighter than usual...
For a brief moment, Sean Harrison wondered.
’Could it be...’
’...that I really have some kind of mental illness?’
The two of them went to the outpatient examination area to pick up Charlotte Rhodes.
The old woman was sitting in a wheelchair while a nurse helped cover her with a thermal blanket provided by the hospital.
Part of the route from the outpatient clinic to the ward was outdoors, and they were worried she would catch a chill.
When Rory Linden and Sean Harrison were still at a distance, the old woman’s expression was relatively warm.
But when she saw that the person with Rory Linden wasn’t Evan Hollis, but Sean Harrison, her expression changed in an instant.
Charlotte Rhodes glanced at the daylight outside the window before speaking. "It’s so early. Are you neglecting your work? Your company?"
’There she goes again...’
Rory Linden felt that Charlotte Rhodes was a bit like those overbearing parents from her school days.
No matter what their child did, they would say, "You should be focusing on your studies."
But Sean Harrison was already thirty, and his career was more successful than anyone’s.
All the preferential treatment Charlotte Rhodes received here was because of Sean Harrison’s status.
If her son were Evan Hollis instead of Sean Harrison...
...she wouldn’t even be qualified to receive treatment here.
"I came to accompany Rory."
Sean Harrison said.
Charlotte Rhodes’s brow furrowed even tighter. "You have your job, and she has hers. Are you going to neglect your own work for hers?"
"Yes, I can."
Sean Harrison replied calmly.
Charlotte Rhodes’s anger flared up instantly.
Rory Linden took it all in.
When Charlotte Rhodes had come for her examination, Rory Linden and Evan Hollis had brought her.
Rory had seen exactly how the old woman treated Evan Hollis.
Although they didn’t talk much along the way, once they arrived at the examination area, she repeatedly thanked Evan Hollis for being so "thoughtful."
Now that it was Sean Harrison, the old woman’s attitude did a complete one-eighty.
"Auntie Rhodes, when Evan Hollis brought you over just now, he was actually supposed to be in a minor surgery. He had to ask another anesthesiologist to cover for him so he could come. He’s the one who actually delayed his work."
Rory Linden couldn’t help but speak up.
She wanted to see how Charlotte Rhodes would react.
Charlotte Rhodes leaned back in her wheelchair, showing no significant reaction to this. "That doesn’t count as delaying work."
Every single word.
’How could she be so biased!’
Rory Linden knew Charlotte Rhodes had a weak heart, so she didn’t want to say any more.
Sean Harrison didn’t say anything either.
He had long since given up any illusions about his mother; he was merely fulfilling his duty as a son.
The two of them escorted the old woman back to her ward.
Rory Linden then checked on a few of her own patients before leaving work with Sean Harrison.
Sean Harrison had ordered dinner through the property management.
It was delivered to their home just as the two of them arrived.
The property management staff set out the dinner before leaving.
Looking at the sumptuous dinner on the table, Rory Linden asked Sean Harrison, "Should we... open a bottle of wine?"
"...Are you sure?"
Sean Harrison asked.
She wasn’t a good drinker.
Many things at the beginning of their relationship had progressed so smoothly precisely because Rory Linden had been drinking...
"Mhm, let’s just say we’re celebrating..." Rory Linden paused before continuing, "celebrating that there are only fifty-seven days until we get our marriage license."
It was a simple reason, but it easily convinced Sean Harrison.
The man walked to the wine cabinet and said to her, "Come pick a bottle. We’ll open one every day from now on, right up until... the day we get our license."
There were nearly a hundred bottles of wine in the entire cabinet.
His wine collection wasn’t limited to this; there was also a small wine cellar in the back with many more bottles.
Even if they opened three bottles a day, it would be enough.
Rory Linden didn’t know anything about red wine, so she just picked one at random.
Sean Harrison skillfully opened the bottle and decanted the wine.
He swirled the decanter in his hand, looking at the woman across the small bar from him. "I’ll have my assistant look at some houses, pick a few, and then I’ll take you to see them."
"Hm? This place is great, though." Rory Linden looked out the window and saw Elysian Hospital in the distance. "It’s very close to where I work, and there’s a convenience store downstairs. We don’t need to move, do we?"
"Didn’t you say... you were going to change jobs after the New Year?"
Sean Harrison looked at her.
It was as if he were confirming whether she was really going to change jobs.
He didn’t have much of an opinion about her career plans.
He just wanted her to stay far away from Evan Hollis.
"Oh, that’s right." Only then did Rory Linden remember. "Then... it won’t be too late to move after I’ve confirmed where I’ll be working."
"Let’s have the assistant start looking. After all, good houses aren’t always available."
"Alright. We’ll do it your way."
Rory Linden agreed with his reasoning.
The room was very quiet now. As the decanter swirled, the red wine made a pleasant sound as it sloshed against the glass.
Rory Linden watched the elegant knuckles of his hand as he held the decanter, her gaze traveling up his arm to his face.
The light from the city’s light show outside the window mingled with the light from the small bar, converging on his chiseled features.
She gazed quietly at his face until he lifted his eyes to meet hers, and then she said, "You’re so handsome. Our baby will definitely be beautiful too."
Sean Harrison’s expression froze slightly.
Rory Linden said with a smile, "After we get married, in a few years, let’s have a baby. It doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or a girl, just one. And then we’ll give them all our love and make them the happiest baby in the world."
"...Yeah."
Sean Harrison’s emotions didn’t show on his face, but his heart felt exceptionally heavy.
The scene from the hospital that afternoon replayed in his mind over and over.
He understood that Rory Linden liked children.
He himself felt indifferent toward them.
But if it was their child, he was sure he would love them.
Not long ago, he had asked her if she wanted to have a child...
But he never imagined that in just a few short days, he would be questioning whether he was even fit to have an heir.
Rory Linden watched him continuously swirling the decanter and held out her hand. "I want to try, too."
"Okay."
Sean Harrison placed the decanter on the small bar.
When her hand gripped the neck of the decanter, his large hand gently covered hers, guiding her through a few swirls before letting go.
Rory Linden copied how he had just been swirling the decanter.
To the sound of the liquid sloshing against the glass, she looked up and asked him, "By the way, do you prefer boys or girls?"
