Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 110: "You Can’t Always Expect Others to Clean Up the Messes You’ve Made.
"Are you okay? You’re not hurt, are you?"
Rory Linden wasn’t the least bit concerned about Miles Harrison; she only cared about Sherry Walsh.
"I am not okay! The manicure I just got yesterday is ruined! One of my nails broke! And now I have to go to the police station to give a statement."
Judging by Sherry’s tone, she was clearly more upset about her broken nail.
Hearing that Sherry was going to the police station, Rory quickly asked for the address.
Although Miles had been the one to go crazy, Sherry had been an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
Rory hung up and found Sean Harrison in the study.
The man was at his computer, working.
After she explained the situation, Sean’s brow furrowed slightly. "Miles hit your friend?"
Rory was even more shocked. "He actually hit someone?!"
"Henry Lancaster just called me. He said Miles was causing trouble at a bar, so I told him to call the police." Sean stood up. "Let’s go. I’ll go with you."
The incident had occurred on Veridia’s famous bar street.
At this hour, the police station was at its busiest.
When Rory and Sean arrived, two more officers showed up with a few more young people who had been fighting while drunk.
There were also several parents and guardians who had come to pick them up.
’I never knew a place could be this lively in the middle of the night...’
The moment they walked in, Sherry ran over. "Rory! You’re here!"
"Are you okay?"
Rory pulled Sherry close and looked her over from head to toe.
Once she confirmed Sherry wasn’t hurt, she lifted her hand to inspect her nails.
One of the nails from her new manicure was broken.
Sherry pulled a long face. "I told you my nail broke. I just spent three hours getting them done yesterday. It didn’t even last forty-eight hours before it broke."
"I’m so sorry," Rory apologized anyway. "Just ignore Miles Harrison from now on. Who knows what’s gotten into him lately."
"I will, I will." Sherry waved her hand dismissively. "I’m done with my statement, so I’m about to leave."
"It’s all settled?"
"Yeah. He was the one who started it and hurt my friend. My friend went to the hospital for an examination, and I just came to give a statement."
"Your friend was hurt? Is it serious?"
"Not at all. He just got pushed and fell down. He’s deliberately saying this and that hurts. We can’t let Miles Harrison off easy, right?"
Sherry’s tone was light.
Only then did Rory breathe a sigh of relief.
Seeing this, Sean said, "Since your friends are all right, we should head back and get some rest too."
It was already past midnight.
Rory had work tomorrow.
Sherry’s eyes widened in surprise. "Aren’t you here to pick up Miles Harrison?!"
Rory was a little surprised too.
She had assumed that Sean came with her to bail Miles out.
Even though they had argued that morning, blood was thicker than water. He couldn’t just abandon his own nephew.
"No one will be coming for him for a while," Sean said coolly. "He needs to grow up. He can’t always expect others to clean up the messes he makes."
Rory completely agreed with Sean’s approach.
They said their goodbyes to Sherry at the entrance of the police station.
On the way back, Rory’s phone went BING.
It was a notification from her email app.
Rory didn’t use her email much; it was mostly for submitting articles for publication.
The emails she received at this address were usually work-related.
Rory casually opened the app.
The email was from an unsaved address. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
The subject and body of the email contained just a few simple words: [Miss Linden, please see attached 1/4].
The attachment was a video.
Without thinking much of it, Rory tapped the video to play it.
The phone screen instantly went dark, with only a few faint glimmers of light visible.
The car was very quiet.
A faint rustling sound, like wind blowing through leaves, came from the phone.
The video seemed to have been shot on a phone. Whether because of its age or some other reason, the resolution was extremely low, and the image was very blurry.
Then came the sound of rattling chains, and maybe someone speaking?
Just a few individual syllables...
Before Rory could figure out what the video was about...
The car screeched to a halt!
Rory’s body lurched forward with the inertia. Thankfully, her seatbelt kept her from flying out of her seat.
But she lost her grip on her phone, and it fell to the floor.
Startled, Rory didn’t have time to worry about her phone. She looked up at the road ahead.
Because it was so late, the road was almost completely empty of cars.
Rory then turned to look to the side.
There was no one on the sidewalk either.
The car had stopped in the middle of the road for no apparent reason.
"What’s wrong?"
Finally, Rory looked at Sean.
The man’s hands were gripping the steering wheel tightly, and his expression looked awful.
The fallen phone was still making noise. It sounded like someone speaking, but the voice was so hoarse it was impossible to make out what was being said.
Sean lowered his gaze toward the phone. "What are you watching?"
"Me?" Rory was completely baffled. She explained, "I just got a weird video sent to my work email out of the blue. I just clicked on it to see, but I don’t know what it is. It was probably sent by mistake."
"Let me see." Sean held out his hand.
Rory bent down and picked up the phone from the floor at her feet.
By now, the video had finished playing and was paused on the final frame.
The entire screen was extremely dark, making it impossible to see anything in the image.
Rory was about to tap the play button, but Sean snatched the phone from her.
He then slowly drove the car to the side of the road and stopped.
Even though Rory had already seen the beginning of the video, the man still angled the screen toward himself, turned off the sound, and then hit play.
The light inside the car was dim. From the faint, flickering light the phone cast on his face, she could tell the video was playing.
Rory couldn’t see the video’s content, but she could see Sean’s face.
As the video played, his expression grew uglier and uglier.
His fingers holding the phone tightened, his knuckles turning white and standing out sharply.
After watching the video through once, the man said, "Wait here. Don’t get out of the car."
With that, he took her phone, opened the door, and got out.
Rory sat in the car and watched as the man turned the phone’s sound back on, seeming to watch the video again and again, meticulously.
The warm glow of the streetlight wasn’t bright, illuminating only a small area.
The man stood where the shadows were deepest.
Rory couldn’t make out his expression clearly, but she could feel the emotion radiating from him as he watched the video. ’It seems to be... anger. Or maybe frustration.’
After watching the video an unknown number of times, the man finally lowered the phone. His hand gripped it tightly, his face ashen.
He stood outside the car for a good seven or eight minutes before finally getting back in.
He handed the phone back to Rory and said, "Delete this email. Now."
"Okay."
Rory suppressed the urge to ask "why" and deleted the email.
Sean gripped the steering wheel with both hands and took a deep breath, as if trying to suppress some powerful emotion.
He waited until Rory showed him her phone, confirming the email was completely gone, before starting the car again.
Neither of them said a word for the rest of the drive.
When the car was parked in its spot in the underground garage, Sean finally spoke. "You go on home. I have to take care of something."
Rory could see how awful his expression was and finally asked, "What is it? Is it about the video?"
