Chapter 39: Breaking the Barrier.

The small doll approached the fence, placing its arm on one of the blackened rusty metal bars. π—³πš›π—²π•–πš πšŽπš‹π—»π—Όπ•§π—²π₯.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Upon contact, blue sparks jumped violently, though Legba didn’t flinch in the slightest at this phenomenon.

He nodded, looking analytically at the gate.

"It’s much more complex than it seems, apparently it has several layers of protection," the Lwa commented. "If a normal person touched the fence, they would feel horrible fear and revulsion toward this place and would move away, but if they still try to enter, there’s a magic barrier to block them."

The Lwa shook his head.

"No, it’s not a magic barrier, it’s the crystallization of an artificial axiomatic law, as if they had manifested the very concept of ’blockage’ in the area. This would only be achieved with extremely powerful heka," the Lwa indicated.

Anansi observed the barrier calmly, and nodded tranquilly.

"This is the work of a very powerful Devastra, but it’s strange, I couldn’t tell you which one," the woman affirmed.

She didn’t know exactly all the Devastra, however, she did know most of them.

In fact, she had seen how "that man" had created them eras ago.

It was ironic to see how now, the Devastra had become a tool to do everything that "that man" had decided to destroy.

"Yes, though don’t worry, I can open it," Legba affirmed with confidence.

Anansi didn’t doubt it.

Legba was the Lwa of borders and paths, capable of opening doors and breaking those borders.

The small doll extended its hands forward, while a white light began to shine in front of it.

A lock made of blue light formed right on the fence.

Then, the doll moved its hands, as if they were turning an invisible key with both arms.

A small ’click’ was heard and subsequently, a slight burst.

The barrier was breaking, emitting the same sound as glass breaking.

Then, right at the moment the barrier broke, evil was revealed.

Like when a pond that’s about to overflow breaks, a great wave of a twisted and ominous aura escaped from the place.

It wasn’t Azoth, but something equally disturbing.

It was like a miasma, an unpleasant and fetid essence.

Anansi knew it, it was the essence of death, the state that ends a cycle.

However, there was something different, as if it didn’t really belong to a natural order.

Something chilling and blasphemous that would have turned anyone’s stomach.

"Let’s go in," Anansi said dryly, her gaze had become angry now.

She hadn’t trembled one bit at that release of repugnant essence.

However, it seemed to bother her, after all she hated when the balance of the world was altered.

That’s why she had fought so hard, if it was already difficult to fight external contamination, knowing that someone was trying to do it from within was also unpleasant.

"I-I’m sorry, I think I used too much power to open this barrier. I deduce I overdid it," Legba said with a tired air.

Anansi nodded, as she slowly crouched down and took the doll delicately in her hands, then put it inside her pocket.

"Thank you for your help, rest," Anansi said calmly, as she looked at the church again.

An ominous presence continued to emanate from it that would have dissuaded anyone from entering.

But she didn’t tremble one bit, looking at the building with freezing coldness.

The woman took a step, entering the small garden behind the fence.

Upon doing so, the dry and rotten plants on the ground moved, the ground trembled and monstrous plants emerged from it.

Several thorny brambles shot toward Anansi at incredible speed.

However, the witch ignored them, before they could reach her, the brambles were violently cut.

"Thank you for protecting me, air," the woman said coldly, as one of the monstrosities that came from the earth lunged.

It had the shape of a carnivorous plant, and seemed to want to devour the woman.

However, before it could reach her, a pillar of earth emerged from the ground that pierced through the plant’s head, stopping it completely.

Anansi just kept walking.

"Thank you, earth, for destroying my enemies," the witch thanked, as she continued walking calmly.

She didn’t really need to thank the spirits, she did it out of simple politeness.

However, she knew that the spirits of water, wind and earth would always protect her, because they were indebted to her for saving their parents.

The great spirits.

The incarnations of the fundamental archetypes of the world.

Whom she had saved from a state of corruption.

"How annoying," the witch said, as another of the plants was about to attack her.

This one was elongated, with several purple flowers growing all over its body.

The plant expelled a purple miasma toward Anansi, but the air moved as if it had a life of its own, expelling the miasma backward.

While from the ground several earth projectiles destroyed the plant.

"Burn," the woman then ordered.

Her robe consisted of multiple pockets, these were conduits to subspaces and other places.

Anansi had created several artificial ecosystems in her "home." In them several fire spirits dwelled.

The mixture of thermal spirits and wind creates fire spirits.

Those came out of her pocket, red spheres formed by an energy that emulated the shape and movement of flames.

When more plants emerged from the ground to attack her, Anansi was already surrounded by three rings made up of fire spirits.

In unison they expelled flames that struck the vegetable abominations making them start to burn and become charred.

The terrain had been destroyed, but Anansi continued advancing calmly, as if nothing were happening, until finally reaching the building.

The wood creaked under her feet as she advanced and opened the creaking door.

The smell of putrefaction and death filled her nostrils but she didn’t flinch.

The starlight filtered through a broken stained glass window, illuminating an old room full of rotten or broken benches.

Several stone statues stood in the room, tall and firm.

Anansi knew with just one glance, they were golems.

When she entered, the eyes of the statues glowed.

The guardians of the temple had awakened.
