Living Only For Myself: Make Those Who Hate Me Regret It-Chapter 91 - 90: Xu Su, I Mind This
Qian Jia feigned a look of sudden realization. "Oh, my bad. My question put our dear Susu in a tough spot."
"It’d be terrible if God Xi heard Susu saying another guy is handsome."
"For the sake of all the snacks and drinks the class president has treated us to, we can’t ask things like that. My bad, my bad..."
Xu Su: ...
Watching the two drama queens, Xu Su rubbed her aching temples. "You two take your time. I’m heading home. I need to get back for lunch."
After a busy morning, it was now almost eleven-thirty. She would get home just in time for lunch, so Xu Su didn’t want to linger.
She planned to eat lunch, pack a couple of outfits, and then head to her grandmother’s house in the countryside for summer vacation.
Xu Su carried a large bag. Inside were two sets of the autumn school uniform and a few of her warmer clothes. It wasn’t much, and she breezed out of the school gates.
She walked a little over a hundred meters, then got into the car, bag in tow.
The air conditioning in the car was perfect. Xu Su pulled out a couple of tissues to wipe away her sweat. Noticing Zhou Mochen’s gaze on her, she pursed her lips and handed him the bag. "Put this away for me."
With her hands now free, she fastened her seatbelt and asked casually, "Have you been waiting long?"
Zhou Mochen took the bag, placed it on the back seat, then turned to her with a hurt look in his eyes. "Not long. But Susu, you’re going to your grandma’s for the summer. What about me?"
Xu Su froze, staring at the utter seriousness in his eyes. She snapped, "How am I supposed to know what you’ll do? I finally have a summer vacation, so of course I’m going to spend time with my grandma. It’s not like you don’t know that staying at my parents’ house just sours my mood."
If she could, Xu Su would live in the dorms year-round. But since it was vacation and she had a choice, there was no way she was staying in Chang City to watch the bizarre antics of Chen Shulan and her husband.
Zhou Mochen paused before saying, "I’ve waited all this time for your break to start, and now you’re leaving Chang City. It’s going to be even harder to see you."
Before, when she was at school, Zhou Mochen could just drop by whenever he missed her. But with Xu Su heading to the countryside, the drive alone would take three or four hours.
"..." Xu Su ignored his whining and urged, "Just drive. I need to eat at home and then catch the bus to Kang County."
There was only one bus to Kang County in the afternoon, leaving at three o’clock sharp. If she missed it, she would have to wait until the next day.
Zhou Mochen sighed. Seemingly helpless against her, he obediently started the car.
He said slowly, "I’ll drive you there, Xu Su. Show me the way. Where exactly is your grandma’s place? I can’t go two weeks without seeing you."
At his words, Xu Su’s eyes went wide. "There is absolutely no way I’m taking your car to my grandma’s! Zhou Mochen, it’s the countryside, you hear me? Do you even know what that means? The roads aren’t even paved! It’s all just bumpy, potholed dirt tracks. You’d be lucky to see a car like yours there even once a month."
If she really rode back in Zhou Mochen’s car, the gossip would probably spread through all of Chen Family Village by the end of the day.
’That granddaughter Granny Chen raised came back with a rich sugar daddy.’
After all, Xu Su was pretty. As she grew older, the villagers would always see her and joke that she was destined to marry a rich man one day.
There wasn’t much to do for fun in the village, and the women gossiping on the street corners were experts at spinning something out of nothing. If even the smallest thing happened to a family, the entire village would know about it within hours.
Xu Su didn’t want malicious rumors spreading about her in the place where she’d grown up.
With her shooting down one suggestion after another, the smile on Zhou Mochen’s face slowly faded.
They happened to hit a red light. He stepped on the brake, turned his head, and fixed her with an intense gaze. "Xu Su, you have to think about me. If I can’t see you, what am I going to do?"
He asked with such a serious expression, as if not seeing her for two weeks would be the death of him.
Xu Su was instantly struck speechless.
After a long pause, she tried to negotiate. "We can text. How about this? I promise I’ll reply to your messages as soon as I see them. Okay?"
Zhou Mochen scoffed. "So you finally admit you’ve been seeing my messages and ignoring them?"
The light turned green, and the car started moving again.
Xu Su choked on her words, then quickly changed the subject, going on the offensive. "I’m not done with you yet, Zhou Mochen! Why on earth did you talk to me today in front of all those teachers and students?"
The memory of his tone when he’d said, ’Xu, I don’t bite,’ made her blood boil.
She was angry, but Zhou Mochen was even angrier. His expression turned cold. "When you saw me coming over, what was that all about? Hiding behind that male classmate of yours? The top student of your grade, wasn’t it? He seemed awfully concerned about you. Xu Su, aren’t you going to explain?"
The car stopped a short distance from the Xu Family’s home. Zhou Mochen left the engine running. He reached out, grabbed her hand, and gave it a light squeeze. "Tell me about it. What was his name again? Xi Zirong?"
The car was quiet. Zhou Mochen had only asked casually, not thinking much of it. But when she remained silent for so long, he realized something, and his expression grew progressively darker.
"So there really is something to it. Xu Su, don’t tell me you like him."
His grip on her hand tightened. Xu Su struggled, but couldn’t break free.
The air in the car was frigid. Xu Su turned her head stiffly to look at Zhou Mochen’s blank face.
There wasn’t a hint of emotion on his face, but his eyes were icy as he stared at her without blinking.
Xu Su remembered the conversation in her dorm room from earlier.
’An unbelievably handsome guy, huh?’
She couldn’t resist. She reached out her free right hand and caressed Zhou Mochen’s handsome face. Then, mimicking his earlier tone, she said, "Zhou Mochen, don’t look like you’re facing down a mortal enemy. Have some confidence. Do you really think you don’t measure up to Xi Zirong?"
For a second, Zhou Mochen actually seemed to be seriously weighing the comparison. Then, his expression gradually softened.
’No matter how he looked at it, he was the obvious winner.’
’He’s getting easier and easier to placate,’ Xu Su thought idly.
Xu Su thought the matter was settled and was about to pull her hand back, but he grabbed it and pressed it firmly against his cheek.
Zhou Mochen’s voice was grave. "Stay away from him. I can tell that Xi Zirong likes you. Even if you don’t like him back, you need to keep your distance. Xu Su, that’s a line for me."
’That’s a line for me...’
"..." Xu Su was silent for a moment before saying slowly, "We’re classmates. I can’t just refuse to have basic conversations with him."
He smiled, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes. "Don’t classes get split for arts and sciences in the second year? Or I could just have a word with someone and get him transferred out of your class."
Xu Su glared at him furiously. "Zhou Mochen, don’t you dare overreach! Wasn’t meddling in my family’s affairs enough for you? Now you want to interfere at my school too? You think you can do whatever you want just because you have a little money?"
Zhou Mochen’s eyes narrowed as he studied her. "What exactly are you so angry about? Is it because I said I’d have him transferred out of your class? Is that it?"
Xu Su let out a laugh of pure fury. "You’re unbelievable! Fine. Do whatever you want, Zhou Mochen. If interfering in my school life will make you happy, then go right ahead."
