Living Only For Myself: Make Those Who Hate Me Regret It-Chapter 200: "Should I Thank You for at Least Leaving Me a Shred of Dignity?
’Even if this day had to come, did it have to be right in front of him?’
Xu Su could almost understand how Xi Zirong must have felt when he saw Shen Chen kiss her with his own eyes.
’Just the thought of it was unbearable for me, so Xi Zirong, who saw it happen, must be in even more pain.’
Her eyes welled up. Xu Su turned to look out the car window, belatedly feeling the urge to cry.
’In her heart, she hated Shen Chen, and she hated herself.’
’How could I have hurt Xi Zirong so badly?’
’I’m such a monster!’
’Right now, Xi Zirong just can’t accept it. Once he gets over the initial shock, he’ll probably end up hating my guts too...’
The guilt didn’t last long before her phone started vibrating in her pocket.
It was a little past twelve. School had ended a while ago, giving Xu Su plenty of time to walk out of the school gates and meet up with Zhou Mochen.
Seeing the incoming call, Xu Su hesitated.
"Go ahead, answer it."
Xu Su froze, flustered and awkward, and decisively pressed the hang-up button.
A moment later, a text message came in.
It was, without a doubt, from Zhou Mochen.
Crazy Zhou: [Sweetie, not out yet? Did your teacher keep you late?]
Xu Su clutched her phone, a headache forming. She had no intention of texting back in front of Xi Zirong.
She was already in the wrong for insisting on the breakup, and to make matters worse, her boyfriend had seen her kissing someone else with his own eyes...
No matter what, Xu Su couldn’t bring herself to reply to her new boyfriend in front of the ex she had just finalized her breakup with...
Thankfully, Zhou Mochen must have assumed her teacher really had kept her late, as he didn’t call again.
The car was silent. Seeing that Xu Su hadn’t taken the call, Xi Zirong glanced at her. He forced a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "Should I thank you for at least leaving me a shred of dignity?"
Her hand, still clutching the phone, trembled, and she nearly dropped it. A wave of shame washed over Xu Su. "Don’t be like this... Please, don’t say any more."
Xi Zirong fell silent as requested. His smile vanished, and he focused on driving.
He drove fast. Just after twelve-thirty, the car entered the gates of First High School. As they passed the familiar alley entrance, Xu Su could see the black Land Rover parked quietly in its usual spot.
Zhou Mochen was waiting for her.
"Stop the car."
At twelve-thirty, most of the day students had already left for lunch, and the boarding students were mostly in the cafeteria. The school entrance was very quiet.
Xi Zirong lightly tapped the brake and did as she asked, stopping the car.
Before getting out, Xu Su couldn’t help but look back at him one last time.
The boy’s shoulders were slender. One hand rested on the steering wheel, the other arm relaxed on the open window frame. His posture was casual, just like the handsome, otherworldly top student she had first met at the start of their freshman year.
Seeing that Xu Su was about to leave, he didn’t even turn his head. The moment she was out of the car, he stomped on the gas and sped away without a trace of hesitation.
All that remained was the sight of his car’s rear, still spewing exhaust.
Xu Su’s expression soured....
’Of course. No one could be pleasant to an ex who cheated and was determined to break up.’
’...This is for the best. It’s for the best.’
’Time is the best medicine. All the shame and pain of today will one day be forgotten and healed.’
Xu Su pressed her lips together as she got into the other car, wordlessly pushing away Zhou Mochen’s eager face as he leaned in.
"What’s wrong? Did you get scolded by your teacher?"
Zhou Mochen had waited for her for nearly an hour but showed no signs of impatience. Glancing at Xu Su’s obviously unhappy face, he started the car while turning to coax her. "Is it because you took a few days off and can’t keep up with your classes? How about I find you some tutors?"
"No, thanks. Just leave me alone. I need a minute," Xu Su said, not wanting to talk at all. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
She rolled down the window, not minding the wave of heat that rushed in. She folded her hands on the sun-scorched window frame and rested her chin on the back of them, staring fixedly out at the passing scenery under the blazing sun.
She didn’t seem to worry at all about getting a tan or even a sunburn.
Zhou Mochen frowned at Xu Su’s back. ’My sweetie seems to be in a bad mood.’
’It’s not that she’s mad at me; she was fine this morning when I dropped her off at school.’
’So something must have happened at school to upset her.’
It was normal to have troubles. If his little girlfriend wanted to talk, he would, of course, be all ears and do everything he could to help. If she didn’t want to talk, he could allow her to have her own space.
Having won her over with such difficulty, Zhou Mochen was determined to be the perfect, 100-point boyfriend.
He absolutely could not make her feel suffocated.
After making this decision, Zhou Mochen didn’t say another word to disturb Xu Su, nor did he inappropriately try to stop her from sunbathing.
It wasn’t until they were waiting at a red light that he gently patted Xu Su’s back. His voice was incredibly soft. "Why don’t you tell your big brother what happened? I’ll fix everything for you, okay?"
Without turning her head, Xu Su twisted away from his hand. "Zhou Mochen, just stop bothering me for a second."
As she spoke, the rear window of a Mercedes-Benz, also waiting for the light, rolled down next to their Land Rover, revealing the face of a middle-aged man.
Xu Su glanced at him before looking away, but her eyes darted back a second later...
’He looks a little familiar...’
Before she could place him, the man spoke first. "Don’t you recognize me, Su Su?"
The man’s voice was clearly smiling, yet it had an indescribable, greasy quality to it.
Xu Su’s brain hadn’t even processed it yet, but her body reacted instinctively, a familiar layer of goosebumps rising on her skin.
Looking at his face again, she finally remembered. Wasn’t this her husband’s boss from Li Tingting’s wedding?
’The one they called President Zhao...’
Being called "Su Su" by this greasy old man gave Xu Su the creeps, making her feel as helpless as a frog being stared down by a toad.
Just as she was wondering what to say, a hand tightened on her right shoulder. Zhou Mochen had reached over and pulled her away from the window, having clearly heard the man outside.
With a dark expression, he looked out the window. Without Xu Su in the way, Zhou Mochen finally saw the man’s face.
They locked eyes for only a brief moment before the light turned green and the other car drove off first.
Zhou Mochen emotionlessly pulled his gaze back. As he started driving, he couldn’t help but let out a sneer. "How come every random person dares to have ideas about you? Go on, tell me. Where’d you meet this one?"
He didn’t see the old man as any real threat. He knew better than anyone how much his little girl attracted unwanted attention; his own reactions were proof enough.
’Still, just having ideas isn’t okay... and looking at her like that isn’t okay either.’
Xu Su noticed that his knuckles had turned white on the steering wheel...
It was clear Zhou Mochen was nowhere near as ’calm and collected’ as he was pretending to be.
Still, she could understand. Being targeted by a middle-aged man was disgusting enough for Xu Su herself, let alone for her boyfriend, the great Young Master Zhou.
With that possessiveness of his, Xu Su wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to gouge the man’s eyes out.
The car glided into the garage. The moment Xu Su stepped out, Zhou Mochen grabbed her hand. He pulled her toward the elevator, his voice soft and gentle. "Why won’t you tell me? Sweetie, that old man has impure motives toward you. I have to take care of it for you. Otherwise, he’ll think a little girl like you is an easy target."
