Chapter 27 - 27: Who's the hunter and who's the prey—still don't get it?

Just then, Harrison suddenly turned his head, as if struck by a thought.

But behind him was nothing but calm—absolutely nothing.

Nearly twenty people had searched through the smoke for several minutes, and still couldn't find Kaitō Kid.

That was when Harrison realized something was off. The smoke covered a wide area, sure—but with twenty people searching? No way they wouldn't find anything!

[What the hell? Still no sign of him? What's going on?]

[Who's the hunter and who's the prey—still don't get it?]

[Hahaha, Kaitō Kid must've studied The Art of War—he's got "lure the tiger away from the mountain" and "deception in war" down to an art!]

[Oh my god! This is getting ridiculous—it's been ages now!]

The smoke began to slowly fade, and the silhouettes of the patrol squad gradually became visible.

Once the smoke fully dispersed, only the patrol team and two agents remained—Kaitō Kid was nowhere to be seen.

Harrison had already expected this outcome, so he wasn't even surprised.

The livestream viewers weren't either.

[Hahaha, totally called it—he tricked them all again!]

[Let's be real: Kaitō Kid's the one doing the hunting. These guys? Just prey.]

[Damn it, he played MI5 again!]

[Why?! We clearly saw a silhouette in the smoke!]

One of the agents spotted a black box on the grass—about the size of a pigeon egg.

It was still emitting faint light.

The figure in the smoke? It had come from this thing.

"Damn it, Kaitō Kid!" Harrison was practically fuming. His lungs might as well have exploded.

This entire operation was being livestreamed. To him, this was utter humiliation.

[Oh my god! So that silhouette in the smoke—it was just a projection from this little gadget!]

[Genius. Absolute genius.]

[Real skill doesn't always need high-tech gadgets. Sometimes the simplest trick wins. Forget all that expensive tech nonsense.]

[I swear Kaitō Kid is driving me crazy. What is he trying to do?!]

Harrison yanked off his tactical goggles and stormed toward the castle.

No move was ever meaningless—he knew that very well.

If the earlier trap that knocked out Allen and the others was to get into the castle...

Then this smoke screen? It had to mean he was getting out.

A bad feeling churned in Harrison's gut.

He rushed to Earl Lawrence's room and knocked hard on the door.

"Earl Lawrence, sorry to disturb you!"

A moment later, Lawrence opened the door, his face clouded with displeasure.

"Director Harrison, what now?"

This operation had probably already failed, and Harrison had nothing to lose at this point.

"Earl Lawrence, it's very likely that Kaitō Kid has already escaped the castle."

Lawrence's expression instantly darkened, rage flaring in his eyes.

"Escaped?"

"Harrison, you let him get away?!"

Harrison wanted to argue, but he had no strength left to fight it.

It was just a theory, but he was ninety percent sure it was right.

They hadn't seen even a shadow of Kaitō Kid from beginning to end, and Harrison was frustrated beyond words.

"Earl Lawrence... he's just too cunning. I think we've failed this time."

"Please check right away. See if anything's missing."

Because Harrison knew—Kaitō Kid only ever runs after he's already succeeded.

If he hadn't gotten what he came for, there'd be no reason to leave without a trace.

[This is insane—an earl in Britain just got robbed!]

[Hahaha, and it happened under the nose of their own investigation bureau—with full livestream coverage!]

[If you wanna know what real humiliation looks like, this is it. Absolute clown show, walking in circles and failing nonstop.]

[Quick, somebody find out what he stole already! I'm dying of curiosity here. Kaitō Kid already got away with it, and these clowns don't even know what's missing yet!]

Lawrence immediately rushed back into the room and asked Bertha, "Darling, where's the ruby ring I gave you?"

Bertha pointed toward the vanity, but just as she was about to speak, she suddenly froze in shock.

"The ring's gone?"

"Oh my god! I'm sure I left it right there!"

Lawrence was so angry he nearly shattered his molars. Allen and Harrison had both completely let him down.

Lawrence snapped coldly, "Harrison! Get in here!"

With permission granted, Harrison stepped into the room.

Lawrence pointed at the vanity. "The ruby ring is missing."

"Kaitō Kid must have been in this room. Why didn't you spot him when you came to check?"

"I... I checked?" Harrison froze completely, baffled. He had no memory of ever inspecting this room!

[Wow. That's one hell of a scapegoat situation!]

[Wait a sec... wasn't Harrison just now entering the room for the first time? And Lawrence was inside the whole time, right?]

[I got it! Kaitō Kid must've disguised himself as Harrison to trick Lawrence!]

[Yes! That explains everything perfectly!]

Harrison, who had done his homework on Kaitō Kid, quickly came to the same conclusion.

"Earl Lawrence, Kaitō Kid is a master of disguise. I never entered your room at all. You were tricked."

Lawrence's eyes widened as realization dawned.

"The person who came to inspect the room wasn't you... it was Kaitō Kid. He stole the ruby ring during that moment!"

The truth hit like a thunderclap.

At this point, Harrison was certain Kaitō Kid had already left Milwich Castle.

This operation had been a disaster—a total and complete failure.

From start to finish, they hadn't even caught a glimpse of him, let alone laid a hand on him.

"Earl Lawrence, now that Kaitō Kid has gotten what he came for, he's very likely already left Milwich Castle."

"I need to report the outcome to my superiors. Please get some rest. I'll take my leave."

He bowed and quickly left the room, leaving Lawrence and Bertha in stunned silence.

[Damn it! Kaitō Kid's too slippery. They didn't even catch a glimpse of him, and the ruby ring is already gone!]

[Come on, it's not the 1800s anymore. MI5 better start upgrading their game or they'll always be two steps behind.]

[But how did Kaitō Kid even get in and out? There were guards patrolling the entire castle the whole time!]

[If you knew the answer to that, then he wouldn't be Kaitō Kid, would he?]

Harrison ordered his agents to investigate how Kaitō Kid had managed to move so freely in and out of the castle.

This failure... was the biggest humiliation of his entire career.

He'd completed countless dangerous missions and earned medals for all of them.

But tonight, he had been absolutely crushed by Zhang Yang.

And when he reported this to his superiors, he'd have to explain exactly how it all fell apart.

The worst part? He didn't even know when Kaitō Kid had infiltrated, or how he'd escaped.

Frustrated, Harrison happened to glance upward—and spotted a bat hanging midair above the castle.

But strangely... there was no visible wire, no support. Just the bat, floating eerily in midair.
