Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 263: The Terrifying Fierce Beast
After breakfast, Xu Yi and Lu Ke headed out.
Today, they wanted to check out another direction.
Not for food, but for points, they needed to go hunting.
If winter is long and food truly runs out, they can still use points to exchange for some food.
So now, they can’t lack anything, especially points.
They hadn’t been out for long when Xu Yi and Lu Ke encountered a few rabbits.
Xu Yi decisively made a move and shot two rabbits.
Now they found shooting rabbits extremely easy—almost hitting the mark every time.
Two rabbits were enough for them to eat for a day, and they could also feed Da Bai some.
As for the Giant Wolf, that was uncertain—even giving it two might not be enough to fill the gap between its teeth.
Last night, Xu Yi fed it five or six pounds of jerky, yet it seemed unsatisfied.
Of course, Xu Yi didn’t plan to let it eat its fill—half-full would be sufficient.
After all, wolves are fairly resilient against hunger.
They packed the two rabbits into their basket and continued forward.
On the way, they encountered more rabbits, and Xu Yi again acted quickly.
By the end of the morning, they hadn’t seen any other wild beasts but had shot ten rabbits.
"Why is it that we’re only seeing rabbits today? Where have all the other animals gone?" Lu Ke wondered aloud, not really expecting Xu Yi to have an answer.
After all, Xu Yi was with her the whole time, how could he know?
"Maybe this direction has fewer large animals, so let’s return after lunch. There are still some chores to be done at home," Xu Yi suggested, then found a spot to sit and rest briefly before having lunch.
Although rabbits don’t earn points, their meat is tasty. So, today can’t be considered fruitless.
Having had some jerky, they prepared to leave.
After walking just a few steps, Xu Yi and Lu Ke heard a roar.
The roar was loud, but seemed not too close.
Lu Ke glanced at Xu Yi, as if asking whether they should go check it out.
Xu Yi hesitated a moment and decided to take a look.
After all, they were out hunting for points.
They headed towards the source of the roar, hearing some anguished cries from animals along the way.
Needless to say, it was certainly a site of predation.
Therefore, Xu Yi was even more curious to see clearly.
Who knows, maybe there’s an opportunity to exploit?
The sound got closer, and Xu Yi smelled the scent of blood.
"Over there."
Xu Yi suddenly pointed in a direction and pulled Lu Ke to hide behind a tree.
In the distance, a bipedal creature was standing.
It was holding a Raccoon Monkey, then ripped it apart directly.
Lu Ke saw this and immediately covered her mouth.
Afraid she might scream.
Because it was truly gruesome.
"Ugh... I feel like throwing up."
"Damn it, I was fine until you said that, now I’m..."
"So damn brutal, tearing the Raccoon Monkey in half?"
"Tearing it apart to eat, what kind of Giant Bear is this, so bloody?"
"This must be over three meters tall, right? Last time Xu Yi found a pile of dead Raccoon Monkeys, probably the work of this Fierce Beast?"
"Surely it’s a Fierce Beast, totally unbeatable?"
"Looks exactly like a bear, over two meters tall with such a huge body, estimated over 800 pounds."
"The largest brown bears weigh 800 kilograms but can’t rip open animals like that. Hence, this Fierce Beast is even scarier than the strongest brown bear."
"Xu Yi and Lu Ke are too bold, right? Why aren’t they running now to avoid detection and attack?"
"The ones who don’t fear death are Raccoon Monkeys, see, there’s one over there throwing stones at the humanoid Fierce Beast."
"So damn resilient, being hit without a scratch, still calmly feeding."
"Xu Yi and Lu Ke probably can’t handle it, right?"
Suddenly, the giant beast turned its head towards Xu Yi and Lu Ke’s direction, sniffing forcefully, seemingly noticing them.
Only then did Xu Yi get a good look at it.
This Fierce Beast’s mouth was significantly shorter than a brown bear’s, yet much larger.
Moreover, its eyes were bigger than a brown bear’s, looking decidedly different.
Then it continued feeding.
The Raccoon Monkeys dared not get too close, resorting to throwing rocks.
However, this Fierce Beast’s skin seemed thick, with an air of nonchalance.
"Let’s go." Xu Yi gave Lu Ke a tug, choosing to leave immediately.
This Fierce Beast, Xu Yi felt, they couldn’t handle.
Perhaps, even arrows wouldn’t harm it.
It’s estimated only his machete could breach its defenses.
Yet it’s so massive, Xu Yi felt if slapped by it, his bones would break outright.
Without further ado, Xu Yi pulled Lu Ke and ran towards their camp.
After running for half an hour, he finally slowed his pace a bit.
"Xu Yi, should we deal with it?" Lu Ke asked, glancing back, still uneasy. The Fierce Beast was overwhelmingly fierce, giving her a sense of being helpless against it.
"Currently, we absolutely can’t, unless we make a stronger weapon, like a giant crossbow. Unfortunately, we’ve never found any iron deposits." Xu Yi admitted with some fear; faced directly, aside from fleeing, he saw no other viable option.
Despite acquiring metal forging skills, he hadn’t had the chance to use them.
With metal, he could build a giant crossbow. Then he might manage against such a Fierce Beast.
"Say, the time we found so many dead Raccoon Monkeys and Giant Emus, was it killed by this thing?" Lu Ke recalled that scene, asking instinctively.
If indeed, this Fierce Beast was even more menacing.
"Highly likely, so we better leave quickly." Xu Yi said, quickening his pace again. He felt that only by distancing themselves from that Fierce Beast could they be a little safer.
No idea if any animal could hunt down this Fierce Beast.
Back at camp, their spirits were still somewhat low.
After all, that Fierce Beast had left such an indelible impression.
"Wonder if these Giant Wolves could take it down if they surrounded it in packs," Xu Yi mused aloud, seeing the Giant Wolf lying nearby.
"With such creatures around, completing the 500-day challenge seems too difficult," Lu Ke despaired, recalling the scene of the Raccoon Monkey being torn apart, it was overwhelmingly impactful.
She couldn’t help but wonder if caught by the Fierce Beast, would she too be easily torn apart?
"Don’t be scared, if it appears, we just run. Such large animals shouldn’t run too fast. If it storms our camp, a pot of hot oil and fire should hold it off," Xu Yi reassured immediately, thinking he couldn’t let a beast intimidate him, nor let Lu Ke be afraid.
