Chapter 77: Chapter 77: Tough Tactics

Ben Lawson’s words were blunt but true.

Silas Sutton lowered his head to sip some tea, his distinct knuckles caressing the cup, "As the saying goes, give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."

Ben paused for a moment, then sneered lightly, "Pretentious."

Silas said, "Once you’ve got the inside scoop, don’t tell her directly. Find a way to have Sue Woods pass the message."

Ben laughed mockingly, "If you don’t like Stella Grant, I’ll eat my hat."

Silas didn’t respond, lighting a cigarette instead.

While others start with a bang, Stella faced challenges at every turn as the new leader.

In addition to Shawn Bishop’s mess, there was also the baggage left by the previous project manager.

Comparing the two, neither was worse, they were both terrible.

The assistant was a man in his early thirties, an obvious sly old hand, reputedly a confidant of the former project manager. Seeing Stella overwhelmed, he deliberately brought over another pile of files to trouble her.

Stella hadn’t realized it was intentional until he said these documents needed resolving by the end of the day.

"Manager Grant, these are all leftover issues that have been dragging on for a long time, they must be resolved by the end of the day, or there’ll be no way to explain it to the higher-ups."

Stella looked at the stack of documents on the table, then looked up, her expression calm, "Must it be today?"

The assistant feigned difficulty, "Yes."

Stella glanced at him, got up, walked over to the water dispenser, filled a cup, took a light sip, and with her back turned, asked, "Did the previous project manager get promoted, or did they resign?"

The assistant didn’t grasp the deeper meaning of Stella’s question and truthfully answered, "Resigned."

Stella didn’t ask him why the predecessor left, knowing he wouldn’t tell the truth, she turned and chuckled lightly, "When did he submit his resignation?"

The assistant replied, "Yesterday."

Stella nodded with her glass, "He resigned yesterday, but the documents you brought for me have been piling up for over three months. Assistant Wright, are you joking with me? Or are you testing my capabilities?"

Stella spoke bluntly, and the assistant’s face turned bright red. He hastily explained, "No, Manager Grant, you misunderstood me. These documents have indeed been piling up for over three months, but I absolutely didn’t mean to test you, the pressure from above is real, I..."

Seeing him try to wiggle out, Stella raised a hand to make a calming gesture, "No need to explain. I’ve been in this industry long enough."

Assistant, "..."

Stella walked back to her desk with the glass, sat down, and pushed the pile of documents forward, her voice clear and cool, "I can’t resolve these files by the end of the workday, and I certainly won’t be able to resolve them within the next month."

Seeing Stella’s firm stance, the assistant’s tone turned sour, "Manager Grant, I’m just an assistant. These words shouldn’t be directed at me; you should save them for the higher-ups."

Stella said, "Rest assured, I will convey these words to the higher-ups."

The assistant was taken aback.

Stella continued, "Before that, I need to confirm something with you. Are you here at Sutton Group to earn a living or to play politics and pick sides?"

The assistant’s expression shifted slightly, "What do you mean by that, Manager Grant?"

Stella said, "The project department isn’t like other departments, with proposals, contracts, and subsequent follow-ups; the tasks are intricate and require careful attention. I’ve just arrived, and I don’t expect a pleasant collaboration, but we should at least achieve a harmonious coexistence. If not, there are only two results: I leave, or you do."

Assistant, "..."

Stella looked at him and put down her cup heavily, "Clearly, I was just recruited, so the chance of me leaving is slim."

The assistant tensed, "What do you mean to say?"

Stella tapped the pile of files on the desk with her slender, delicate fingers and said, "I have an important project to follow up on soon. Don’t let these trivial matters affect my progress. If the project gets delayed, I’ll leave, but before I do, I’ll make sure whoever’s causing me trouble is the first to go."

The assistant didn’t expect Stella, a woman, to be so strong-willed and speak so harshly, standing before her for quite a while, unable to say anything.

After about half a minute, the assistant adjusted his breath, stepped forward to pick up the documents, and said, "Manager Grant, I apologize. I mishandled this matter." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Stella didn’t grant him any face, "If there’s nothing else, you may leave."

Assistant, "Yes."

Watching the assistant leave, Stella rubbed her temple with her thumb.

As she prepared to dive back into work, her phone on the desk vibrated.

She looked up, and a message popped up on the screen.
