Chapter 50: Chapter 50: He Likes Her

Ben Lawson’s seemingly casual question precisely struck Silas Sutton’s soft spot.

Silas Sutton merely lifted an eyelid, half-squinting as he stared at him.

Receiving Silas Sutton’s cold gaze, Ben Lawson calmly averted his eyes and continued speaking to Sue Woods on the phone, "Why the silence? Is it inconvenient?"

Sue Woods indeed found it inconvenient as she had already entered the police station lobby, "Yeah."

Ben Lawson said, "Alright, I’ve approved your leave, you go ahead with your business, give me a call once you’re out of the station."

Sue Woods was deeply grateful, "Thank you, Mr. Lawson."

Ben Lawson acted magnanimous, "No need to thank me, we’re all friends here."

Hearing Ben Lawson’s words, Sue Woods was flattered, awkwardly murmured some pleasantries, and then hung up.

After ending the call, Ben Lawson tossed the phone beside him, replacing his earlier timid demeanor with one of arrogant swagger, leaning back into the sofa with his legs crossed, shaking vigorously.

It was as if he feared the shaking wasn’t enough to draw Silas Sutton’s attention.

This time, Silas Sutton didn’t disappoint him, speaking up just half a second later, "What’s up with her?"

Who ’she’ referred to was obvious.

But Ben Lawson, having played the underdog for a while, naturally wasn’t about to easily follow Silas Sutton’s lead, pretending to be confused, "Who?"

Silas Sutton smirked, "Already so free-spirited at such a young age?"

Ben Lawson didn’t understand, "What?"

Silas Sutton replied, "Not even twenty-eight yet and already tired of life, isn’t that being free-spirited?"

Upon hearing this, Ben Lawson uncrossed his legs, stretched, and propped them on the coffee table, "It’s not death that’s frightening; it’s not knowing how to live."

Then, Ben Lawson raised an eyebrow towards Silas Sutton, "Take a certain someone, for instance."

Silas Sutton chuckled coldly, "I heard you accompanied your elder to Mount Corvan recently. I thought you went to seek Buddha, but it turns out you went to learn Taoism?"

Ben Lawson asked, "What do you mean?"

Silas Sutton, "A good hand at talking in riddles."

Instead of getting annoyed with Silas Sutton’s sarcasm, Ben Lawson looked at him unruffled, with a confident tone, "You like Stella Grant."

Silas Sutton sneered lightly, "Can’t cure your nearsightedness, and now you’ve got delusions?"

Ben Lawson tapped lightly on the sofa armrest, pretending to concede, "Alright, let’s say I overthought."

Neither Silas Sutton nor Ben Lawson managed to gain the upper hand in their exchange.

The two stared at each other, falling into an eerie silence.

After a few minutes, Ben Lawson leisurely tapped the sofa with his long fingers, musing to himself, "Stella Grant is quite unfortunate, encountering all sorts of calamities."

Silas Sutton’s gaze was deep, not responding.

Ben Lawson looked at him, amused, "Mr. Sutton, I used to hear people say that liking someone is hard to hide. I didn’t believe it before, but now I do..."

Silas Sutton remained expressionless, "Ignorance is bliss."

As Silas Sutton finished speaking, just as Ben Lawson was about to respond, Sue Woods called.

Ben Lawson smirked, answering the call slowly in Silas Sutton’s presence, "Hello, Sue Woods."

Sue Woods said over the phone, "Mr. Lawson, Stella and I have finished the statement and left."

Ben Lawson, "That quick?"

Sue Woods, "There was surveillance, witnesses, the evidence was solid, we just had to give a statement."

Upon hearing Sue Woods’ words, Ben Lawson glanced at Silas Sutton, about to delve deeper when Stella Grant’s deliberately lowered voice came over the phone, "The barbecue meat needs to be bought again; it’s been tainted with black dog’s blood."

Sue Woods gritted her teeth, "Flynn Shepherd, that bastard, deserves a downfall sooner rather than later."

After Sue Woods spoke, Ben Lawson’s mind raced, and he chuckled, "Are you having barbecue tonight?"

Sue Woods, unaware of falling into Ben Lawson’s trap, responded frankly, "Yes."

Ben Lawson asked, "Where are you having it?"

Sue Woods replied, "At Stella’s place, all homemade, no additives."

Ben Lawson, "Would you mind if there were two more people? I’ll get the supplies, and Stella can handle the cooking."
