Limitless The Strongest Revenant-Chapter 913: Can’t be real [2/2]
"Darling, I know it sounds bad, but it is not your responsibility. It was theirs. Ours begins and ends in this generation. So let's just get revenge! For the ones that died, and for the ones about to be born. I know you are angry at the past Reapers, but it's done."
I couldn't say much about Jo's remark. Funny how all my girls knew of my tendencies. And while I know they kept me in the dark, my heart grew full of their reasons for doing so.
"Anata, words cannot express how proud I am of you. Despite your attempts to hide it at your core, you remain a hero. Otherwise, you would not have felt enraged at the loss of life in the past. But Jo is right; no matter the failures of the past, we must move on."
"Yeah, thank you, Jo, Aki. I acted like a child, didn't I? It's just that I am disappointed in them. So much evil. And malice, and it turns out that it could have been stopped if only Reapers were stronger," I complained.
"It should be noted that I find it weird you are getting worked up, Limitless. The Sirens are right. Why are you acting like everything is your fault? You are not the savior of the Reapers. Far more powerful than you were born, yet they all died. Stop being conceited."
"This bitch… Do you want to breathe through a straw?" Robyn snarled from my lap.
I tucked in my chin to stop Robyn from moving.
"Kitten, let it go. Mia is right. I was quite conceited. She has a point that compared to the Revenants, I'm just a small fish."
"While it is absurd that you feel like that about Limitless, I find it admirable. Fluffy, say no more. Limitless is powerful, despite its eccentricity. It's normal to expect a sense of responsibility with such ability. It is a trait necessary for a king."
Zanele, who saw me calm down, continued, "Amari speaks right. Knowing what I know now, I understand why Limitless feels the way he does. It is related to his mission as a Successor. I will explain later. For now, let us return to the point I was discussing."
The matriarch stood up, took a jar of water, and a basin. She placed the wooden basin on the floor and began pouring the water from waist level.
"This is similar to the situation on Earth and Hellsgate. Earth is like the basin, and this water is chaos. Or the demons who rise from Hellsgate."
As the water fell, droplets made a mess, but most of the water began to gather in the basin.
"And this is what happens right now."
She waved her hand and created small constructs made of soul. The constructs were domes. They were like cages that kept the water out.
"The seven domes represent the space each Revenant can protect. As you can see, there is way too much ground to cover. The domes are lacking. We either make more or create one that encompasses the entire basin."
The seven domes were doing their best. But they were not big enough nor tall enough to protect more than the land under them. The rest of the basin filled gradually as the water continued to pour down.
"Needless to say, Africa's case is the same as this illustration. The Immortal slowly loses the ability to protect the continent. In time, the areas once under his domain are exposed to the malice that flows in the world.
"And as the demons know intimately how humanity works. Through the years, the demons evolved. Rather than risk a big battle, they hide in the shadows. "
Zanele's explanation gave me a glimpse into the world of Reapers. I didn't know if Africa's troubles were unique to them. But if any Revenants fell or lost their souls, the world would be doomed.
"They aim to infest or turn those of high status, like leaders and Reapers from strong bloodlines. Slowly, they corrupt and turn anyone into their slaves. You should know this. Demonic cultists run rampant on every continent, even before my time."
I see. While this was my first time hearing about it, my lessons from anime and manga were enough to fill in the gaps. Underground societies of demon worshipers were a staple in media. Under the coercion or instigation of demons, they acted to destroy life.
"Cunt, something doesn't make sense to me. If the demons want to ruin the world, wouldn't they just make more Reapers? Isn't that what IRIS is supposed to do? Trinity is the one with demons in it. And it's doing the opposite."
"Robyn, can you stop calling my mom a cunt?" Amari pleaded.
"It is fine, my son. Yes, Lady Rhiannon, your observation is true. I do not know the exact details, but even within Trinity, they have different factions. Some try to prevent the creation of Reapers; that is true. But the other side is not causing chaos to create Reapers, but rather malice."
"Malice?"
Zanele then resumed pouring water into her little presentation.
"As we have established, the Revenants still serve as protectors. However, their ability to cope with malice is not infinite. Without anyone to replace them, the moment there is no one left. All that will remain is chaos."
The matriarch canceled her constructs. The water quickly surged through the gaps. The basin quickly began to fill up and ended up flowing out of the basin. Seeing Zanele's demonstration, my mind went back to Phillip's explanations before.
"No, my lord. I am not. This is why, despite almost every religion claiming that reincarnation is a real thing, hardly anyone like that actually exists. The sheer amount of malice that the World Tree holds has become so great that the process of reincarnation has been stopped permanently."
"Well, when the malice of the entire world fills Hellsgate, it falls to the reapers to clean it up. There is only one way to purify malice. It is to bear the brunt of it and overwhelm the emotions."
Filling the world with malice as far as I knew only had one purpose. To ensure that no one could get reincarnated. After all if the number of people you fought against remained the same no matter what you cannot defeat your enemy. We should still be safe.
But then the pieces of info I gathered from all over began to click together.
"What if I told you that every religion and legend you know of was the story of a group of reapers who existed once upon a time. You should know that our task has a time limit, right? Apocalypse, Ragnarök, Armageddon call it what you will. But the world already ended numerous times. Didn't the dinosaurs prove that? The bible even tells you how the world ended in its version."
"John Smith. All Seven continents currently agree to two things. One to deny the Formless any support. And two is to ensure the number of reapers do not pass a certain threshold."
"Limitless, no John Smith. Heed my words for I will only say this once. Do you remember how the Revenants suppress the Formless and the Reaper populations?"

"Your guesses are both right and wrong. IRIS did not ask them to do so, but it was the most obvious answer to normal people. And to put it simply they did all this to ensure that which sleeps remains in slumber."
[My lord, I personally find these results concerning. Of these analogies, only the Welsh version required some imagination. The rest were easy to fit. It cannot be a coincidence that a serpent is always the one to represent chaos and evil.]
"Very well. The worlds in the past did not end because Hell broke open. They ended because he who slumbers awoke and destroyed it."
Fuck. So, the only reason why the world still continued was that the malice still wasn't enough. Even the lives I have lived saw their worlds end, yet there was always a next life. But that wouldn't be the case forever.
{Thou hast one last chance remaining! It shall be the like as all the rest! and thou shall fail!}
"Fuck…" I uttered in resignation.
