Chapter 174: 174. The Kraken Arrives

The Blob’s huge mouth closed around them, and the darkness closed in from all sides. Rick could see the acidic inside through the small opening of light.

It was full of rotting bodies and corruption. The vacuum pull got stronger with each passing second, pulling them closer and closer to that hellish mouth.

His bond resonance screamed danger louder than it ever had before. He could feel Carmilla pulling Liora closer through the network, and his protective instincts took over everything else.

Natasha’s ice magic sputtered uselessly against the creature’s shapeless mass because it couldn’t find anything solid to freeze. Zara’s demonic wings fought against the current, and every muscle in her body was tight with effort, but that wasn’t enough.

Thalor’s voice cut through the noise, breaking with need. "I’m sorry!"

"I brought you all here to die, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it...!"

"I’m such a useless piece of shit—"

WHOOOOOM.

The water trembled intensely, causing Rick’s teeth to vibrate. The Blob screamed, which seemed impossible for something that didn’t have real vocal cords.

The sound traveled through Rick’s whole body, making it hard for him to see.

The huge mouth opened up suddenly, letting go of the vacuum pull all at once. The megalodon fell backward, free from the current that had been pulling them toward certain death.

Rick held on to the dorsal fin with both hands so he wouldn’t fall off completely. "Fucking hell... That was a close one..."

"W-What the hell just happened?" Zara yelled, her wings still spread out as she moved.

Something huge came up through the corrupted water from below. Rick thought at first that it was just another threat, another evil monster that had come to finish what the Blob had started.

Then he could see them clearly.

What he saw were tentacles. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

But these weren’t like the squid they had fought before that were corrupted. These tentacles were huge, and each one was thicker than an old oak tree.

Along their length, bioluminescent suckers pulsed with a rhythmic blue-white light that made patterns that looked almost like writing. Eight of them moved through the water with terrible grace and clear intelligence.

The creature came all the way up from the depths, and Rick’s brain had a hard time understanding how big it was. The thing was as big as the Blob itself, with a bulbous head and tentacle tips that were at least eighty meters long.

The color of its skin was a deep blue-purple, which is the natural color of a healthy ocean predator, not the sickly taint of corruption. Its whole body was covered in bioluminescent patterns that looked like oceanic runes in a language Rick didn’t know.

A crown-like bump on the top of its head made it clear that this creature was probably ancient. The aura coming from it felt old and strong, but most importantly, it was completely pure from the corruption.

Rick said, "Holy shit! What the FUCK is that...?!"

"T-The Kraken..." Thalor answered with widened eyes.

The Kraken’s tentacles hit the Blob’s mass with deadly accuracy. Every hit ripped off huge pieces of rotten flesh.

The water was cloudy with thick plumes of purple ichor. Hundreds of mouths on the Blob screamed in perfect harmony, making a sound that shook Rick’s bones even through Liora’s barrier.

"What the frozen hell is going on?" Natasha’s usual calmness broke a little as she watched the huge battle unfold.

Thalor’s eyes were wide open, and even though he was underwater, tears were forming in the corners.

His voice was choked with feeling. "That’s Myrissa!"

"My little sister has come to help us!"

Rick’s eyes went straight to the top of the Kraken’s head. He had somehow missed the person standing there, perfectly still, even though there was a lot of fighting going on below them.

A woman who’s known as Thalor’s little raised her hand, holding a trident tightly.

She looked to be in her mid-thirties by human standards, but Rick was learning that how old someone looks doesn’t matter with species that live a long time. Her hair moved like living seaweed around her head, with deep green-black strands moving on their own, not with the water current.

There was no doubt that she was related to Thalor because of her ocean-dweller features. The bioluminescent light illuminated her skin, which had a faintly scaled, iridescent quality.

With practiced ease, her webbed fingers wrapped around her trident. With every breath, her gills fluttered on her neck.

Rick was most interested in her armor. It looked like it was made of living coral that moved and grew on her body, changing how much of her body it covered as she moved.

It was both beautiful and a little creepy, like watching stone flow like water.

Her eyes were a solid blue-white color with no visible pupils, which was a sign that she was royalty. Those eyes were cold and determined as they looked at the Blob.

She held her trident up high. Her voice didn’t travel through water the way it usually does.

Instead, it boomed right into Rick’s head, pure oceanic magic that didn’t need words at all. "BEGONE, CORRUPTION SCUM!"

At the same time, all eight of the Kraken’s tentacles came together at the Blob’s center. The princess who lived in the ocean yelled out an attack name that echoed with power.

"Oceanic Executioner: TIDAL CRUSH!"

The tentacles tightened. The Blob’s body, which had no shape, was crushed violently by impossible pressure.

Bubbles of disgusting eyes popped up all over its surface. Mouths threw up streams of bad bile that mixed with the water around them.

Rick could see the corruption core at the center of the creature through its clear flesh. It was a pulsing mass of dark energy that looked like glass made from solidified shadows.

CRACK!

The sound pierced the water with the force of a whip.

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

The core broke apart like pottery that had been dropped, and pieces flew off into the dark. The whole mass of the Blob went limp at once.

The thing that held it together just stopped being there. Corruption spread through the water like purple smoke, quickly losing strength as ocean currents carried it away.

In a matter of seconds, all that was left were faint wisps being blown away.

There was complete silence in the area. The Kraken’s bioluminescent patterns pulsed in a calm, steady rhythm, making a light show that would have been beautiful in other situations.

The rider slowly lowered her trident and looked around for any other threats.

After that, she turned to face the megalodon. The solid blue-white eyes were fixed on Thalor, and Rick saw her face light up with recognition.

"Myrissa," Thalor said, his voice barely above a whisper, full of emotion he couldn’t quite hide. "Little sister."

The Kraken moved through the water with an unnatural grace. This big of a creature shouldn’t be able to move so smoothly, but it came up to them like something much smaller.

It stopped about twenty meters away, and its tentacles curled up under its body.

Without thinking, Myrissa jumped off the Kraken’s head. She didn’t swim like most people do.

Instead, she glided through the water like she was flying, with coral armor flowing around her in hypnotic patterns. She landed on the megalodon’s back right in front of Thalor with perfect balance.

They just stared at each other for three full seconds. Rick could feel the tension crackling through the water between them.

It was like two hundred years of being siblings were all in one moment.

Then Myrissa hit Thalor in the shoulder hard.

"Ouch! What the ocean abyss was that for!?" Thalor rubbed the spot, really surprised.

Myrissa’s voice was melodic even when she was angry. She spoke Common with a slight musical accent.

"You fucking fool!"

"You were corrupted for three weeks and didn’t tell anyone?"

"Do you know how many search parties Mother sent out to find you?"

"I was corrupted, Myri! I couldn’t write letters while a monster of corruption was controlling my body!"

"And now you show up two hundred meters from the wards on a dead megalodon with a group of people from the surface?!" She looked at Rick and his friends, squinting as she judged them.

"One of whom has five different Spirit Bond signatures glowing like a magical lighthouse!"
