Chapter 8: A Way to Stop the Past Repeating

"Get your pretty hands off me..."

White growled out as she took back her hands, stepping away.

He shot to his feet after, looking around him.

It was a weird place, like standing in the dark void, except the darkness beneath his feet seemed to hold these tiny golden balls, connected by golden lines.

They glowed, sending an invisible ripple that created solid ground beneath their feet.

Those same tiny golden lights hovered around them too, providing some illumination in the darkness.

"It’s just a Mind Space."

She said from behind.

"I know what a Psychic’s Mind Space looks like..."

White responded, trying to tap one of the golden lights, but it backed off of his fingers as if repulsed by a strange force.

"It’s not a place I’d be so eager to enter."

He added, turning to her with furrowed eyebrows.

She shrugged.

"We have a higher chance of surviving in here than out there. They’re hunting us...Supernaturals. "

"You saw them, didn’t you, even when nobody could feel their presence."

"They want us dead...or worse."

She added.

’There’s no us.’

White thought quietly to himself, turning away and seemingly looking blankly in front of him, but he was already lost in his head.

’I’ve ruined it...I’ve ruined everything.’

He had been given one power; one he believed was even greater than the system itself:

Regression.

He had been sent into the past, with the knowledge of the future, and he had planned to use that to his full benefit.

He knew that if he followed the action sequence as he had done in his past.

If he had touched that golden-haired boy, awakened a normal S-rank awakening, and chosen the United Earth Federation.

He would have been able to perfectly replicate the future, while giving himself advantages that he had missed in the United Earth Federation.

The regrets that he had in the UEF, he would have been able to fix, and all of it started from the awakening ceremony.

That was most likely why the system had regressed him to a day before it.

Yet now...he had lost all of that.

He awakened an S-rank, as he planned, but not the one he wanted.

He was supposed to be chosen by the United Earth Federation, but they avoided his gaze, wanting nothing to do with him, for reasons he still had no idea of.

In the end, he had been dragged along with the XtremeCybers, an organization he knew almost nothing about.

He had created a mess of the awakening ceremony and lost his biggest weapon, his regression.

’I failed.’

[Not really.]

The system panel flashed in front of him.

’What?’

[You only failed with the regression that has something to do with you. Many things that happened in the past, many things of weight, were beyond your power.]

[Whether you get chosen by the United Earth Federation or XtremeCybers. Dongard City will still be flattened to dust 2 years from now.]

[Draugr will still become the Beast of Draugr and slaughter an entire city, destroying three United Earth Federation bases in the process.]

[The Commanders of the United Earth Federation will still betray Humanity and side with the Supernaturals.]

"The Major Events will still happen. Events that never relied on me to happen in the first place."

White mused to himself.

[What’s the one thing you wanted to change the most in the future, White?]

The system suddenly asked, and White’s eyes flashed.

’To destroy Draugr...before he destroys my combat squad.’

[But do you remember how your combat squad came together?]

It asked further, and White’s brows furrowed, not understanding where it was exactly going, but then the realization hit him.

’They were together because of me.’

His combat squad was people he had chosen by himself. People he felt he could trust in the United Earth Federation, and that was why he was captain.

But now that he wasn’t going to attend the United Earth Federation, that means there would most likely be no combat squad.

[Besides, the UEF Commanders wanted to get rid of you, White. Only you.]

[Your combat squad was only added to the fire because they wouldn’t stop trying to dig into the truth of your death and reveal it. For that reason, they chose to kill all of you.]

[If you don’t exist in their world, if you don’t exist in the United Earth Federation. They wouldn’t all die, at least not for that reason.]

’Perhaps one way of avoiding the past repeating itself...is doing the complete opposite of all events that led to it in the first place.

White thought, as the realization naturally came to him.

[So, get your head together. You’ve still got a chance.]

"Hey...are you okay?"

The voice echoed behind him, and his blank gaze regained focus.

Closing his eyes, White quietly inhaled and exhaled, the lost and furious expression on his face fading, replaced by a more cordial expression.

He turned behind him, a small smile on his lips.

"I’m fine. Thank you."

The change in tone caught her a bit by surprise.

Ever since they had met, the boy had been grumpy and cold, but now, seeing such a change was quite unexpected.

Still, it was a good sensation as her heart, which wanted to explode with guilt and confusion, settled a bit.

"I know we met in... less than pleasant circumstances."

White said, stepping forward.

"You knocking into me and sending me tumbling down the stairs."

She avoided his gaze in embarrassment, staring at her feet.

"That was a mistake."

"So."

He said, and she turned up to look at him.

He was a head taller.

"How about we start our meeting all over?"

"I’m White. White Sinclaw."

He said, reaching his hands out for a handshake. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

She stared at it, a bit of doubt in her eyes, and he noticed it, prompting him to slowly take it back.

"It’s fine, if you don’t feel..."

Before he could fully take back his hand, she reached out fast, grabbing onto it and securing the handshake.

"I’m Novaelia Limitless. You can just call me Nova."

"A Limitless New Star..."

White mused beneath his breath, but she could hear him, a bit of shock flashing through her eyes.

"You...you know the meaning of my name?"

Limitless New Star. That was the meaning of Novaelia Limitless.

"Just came across it randomly in the past."

He said with a shrug, taking back his hands.

She looked at him quietly for a while before the corner of her lips tilted slightly.

"So..."

White sat down on the glass-void.

"What’s your deal with those ghost supernaturals anyway?"

’If I’m to improve my power as quickly as I can, then I need to gather as much information as possible related to this Limitless Ability.’

She also took a seat by his side and began,

"Firstly, they’re not ’ghost supernaturals’."

"They’re..."
