"She won’t let us escape," Elias said, coming to the inevitable conclusion. He had hoped that the Beast of Decay might delay her a little, giving him an opportunity to escape. Unfortunately, it became clear that that wasn’t the case.

It was also understandable why even the evolved fighter jet wasn’t able to take that woman down, instead returning almost completely damaged. That woman was in a different league.

If a Fable of a middle world was so strong, then what about the Fables of higher worlds? Were they also in this land? He didn’t even want to think of the possibility, nor did he have time for it, as his survival was on the line.

"I will land for a little while. After I drop you there, I’ll distract her and let her go after me. You should remain hidden and run away when we’re not here!" the Ego suddenly told Elias, who was still holding on to the small, fractional gap in the hull.

After seeing the display of that woman’s strength, the Ego knew that she was frighteningly strong. She could have killed him in an instant when he first went to fight her, but she had simply been toying with him, as if trying to see what this interesting metal bird was.

Her curiosity was over, and now she wasn’t in the mood to play around. If the two of them didn’t do anything, then both of them were going to die.

To help Elias survive, it could only see one option. It was to distract that woman, giving him an opportunity to escape, if possible.

"There is also something that I have to say to you. I know that if I don’t say it now, I’ll never have this opportunity," the ego’s voice grew weaker and slower as it started descending.

He knew that it was probably the last opportunity he had to say something and be heard. He had been in this godforsaken world for so long that he had almost forgotten what it was like to talk to someone and get a reply.

Throughout the years, many people tried to pull him from the Beast of Decay, but none of them were successful. They couldn’t even hear his voice telling them that it was useless.

The ego was tied to an object, and that’s where his life began and was meant to end.

"I am sorry for before," the ego said as his wings sliced through the wind during his descent. "I didn’t have any intention of making a mockery out of you. I just... I was wrong."

Elias gave him a second life and the freedom to soar through the sky. In return, he hurt Elias without intending to. He had wanted to apologise to him for a long time, and this felt like the last opportunity he was ever going to have.

"I know that I deserve all your anger. I am a fool. Maybe that’s why my master left me here? Even though I don’t want to accept it, it might be true," he said, his voice appearing directly in Elias’s mind.

Normally, even Elias couldn’t detect many emotions in the voice of the ego, but for some reason, the ego sounded a lot like a human at that moment. Was it a change that happened because of his evolution? It was unclear.

"I was left here, abandoned. You were right. And the moment you pulled me out, deep down, I felt happy. So can you... not hate me?" he asked, knowing that this was his last time with Elias.

After that, he was going to disappear forever. He even thought that maybe it was for the best that he disappeared, since he was only an annoyance for everyone.

"It looks like I won’t be able to meet my master. When you find him, can you tell him one thing for me?" the Ego asked as the jet neared the ground. "Tell him that even until the last moment, I didn’t forget him. I was waiting..."

The jet soon reached the ground, coming to a slow halt as the dust in the surroundings was just beginning to settle.

When the jet was no longer flying, and the constant gush of wind wasn’t trying to send him flying, Elias could finally breathe properly. He jumped down from the jet, landing next to it.

The jet started moving away from Elias, propelled by its engine’s thrust, leaving Elias behind. Even as the ego was leaving, it hoped that Elias was at least once going to say that he forgave him. Unfortunately, those words never came.

"I would not tell Aliath anything for you." These were the only words that came from Elias, which left the ego somewhat sad. He was sure that Elias was still angry, but he didn’t blame him.

The jet increased the speed, leaving Elias far behind. However, just as he started rising in the air, it felt a familiar yet unfamiliar energy surrounding its body.

He felt his surroundings turning white, as if he was being pulled in an entirely different space, just like it happened when Elias kept him in the creation space.

"What are you-" He tried speaking, but once again, his voice was suppressed as he disappeared. Only Elias was left behind, surrounded by a large cloud of dust.

"If you want to tell him anything, then do it yourself," he mumbled. "Because your sacrifice here wouldn’t help anyone."

He knew that he was the target of that woman. It was highly unlikely for her to be fooled by a trick like this. And even if she was, then it was going to take her a few minutes at best to destroy the fighter jet and return here. Where could he run in a few minutes?

Either both of them were surviving this, or none of them were surviving this. And Elias wasn’t in the mood for it to be the latter. He hadn’t survived all this time to die at the hands of a Fable.

"She is a monster who won’t let me live. That leaves only one path for survival." He took a deep breath, patting the specks of dust off his shoulders. "I’ll have to hunt that monster."
