Chapter 34: 5000 Beasts Surrounds the Town

Neera City... Viscount Mansion...

"Did you find her?" asked Isaac impatiently.

"N-No, Young Lord. She seems to have left the mansion." answered the servant nervously.

Isaac’s expression darkened. Not long after Lukas left the mansion, he had asked the servants to bring Oriana to him.

While he had given her a month’s time to prepare herself on her request, the situation had changed with the beast tide.

Everyone was nervous because If something went wrong or the beast tide was stronger than they believed, it might reach Neera City and the consequences would be dire.

Maybe he would even die in the attack?

That was why he wanted to have her before the beast tide arrived. However, to his anger, she had disappeared from the mansion.

"Did that cripple take her with him?" muttered Isaac hatefully.

...

Gordon Town was named after a small noble family that established this town not long after Crimson Valley Forest pacification.

The family still existed and town’s folks respected it but the one to manage and rule the town was Viscount Raymond’s eldest son, First Young Lord, Maxwell.

Since the Gordon family took care of them since the establishment of the town, people of the town didn’t like that someone else was acting as the ruler and were very uncooperative, though they didn’t dare to rebel knowing what the consequences of it would be.

When Maxwell came to this town, hoping to gain experience and change the town for the better so it would reflect well on him and increase his chances of succeeding Raymond, he became depressed seeing the town’s people seemed to hate him.

After finding out the reason, he understood why and ever since then, he worked for their benefit, hoping to impress them, so they would no longer view him with hatred.

His efforts weren’t in vain as his work and conduct really changed people’s view of him, their ruler and they became more accepting of him.

The improvements satisfied him, but just when he thought everything would go well, suddenly the beast tide struck.

Now, he was protecting one of the two gates of the town with his Knights and followers while the Gordon family was protecting the other gate.

Grawl!

Bang! Bang!

"Don’t let up! Continue killing them. We have to hold them back until the reinforcements arrive." Maxwell shouted, his hands placed on the gate.

He was using a Water Elemental Magic Spell to boost the thick wooden gate’s defense while making it so that when the beast attacked it from the outside, the layer of Water Elemental Mana would absorb and disperse half of the force.

On top of the wall, his Knights along with the town’s people were constantly raining down arrows on the berserk beasts. But because the beasts were too many, in just a while, there would be a large group in front of the gate, trying to tear it down.

When this happened, two Knights directing the trainee Knights and town’s people would activate their aura and swing their sword. Blood and flesh would fly and the beasts would fall dead.

But after fighting for more than six hours without much of a break, everyone was tired and no longer could use their full strength.

Moreover, because they couldn’t go down the wall to remove the beasts’ corpses, they had piled up several feet high. Other beasts could easily climb them and then jump on the wall. If anyone made a mistake and allowed the beast on the wall, there would be several casualties.

Behind the gate, Maxwell’s complexion had turned sickly pale and his eyes were becoming unfocused as he hurriedly tried to absorb some mana from a mana crystal in his hand.

He was a Peak 1-Star Mage and didn’t have much mana. In the past six hours, he had to replenish his reserves several times.

’Is this the end?’ He thought, gripping the mana stone tightly. He barely had any mana left in his mana nodes and the mana stone in his hand was his last. This meant he wouldn’t be able to keep the Water Shield activated for too long.

"Young Lord! Don’t give up! The reinforcements have arrived!"

Just as he was beginning to despair, he heard one of his Knight’s shout and a flicker of hope was reignited in his heart.

...

Rumble! Rumble!

Shua! Shua!

Within a few seconds, Henry and his cavalry closed in from behind the beasts.

"Kill!"

With a shout, Henry raised his sword which shone with a bright white radiance and slashed ahead.

Swoosh!

The air whistled as a three-meter-wide white crescent shot out and slashed through several beasts, immediately killing many while severely injuring the others.

Just like mage realms were divided in 1-Star, 2-Star, 3-Star and so on, Knights also had their own division.

First was Apprentice Knight, equivalent to 1-Star Mage. Then was the Adept Knight, equivalent to 2-Star Mage. Due to this, many people also call 2-Star Mages, Adept Mages. Then there were Master Knight and Grandmaster Knight.

Unlike the trainee Knights who had yet to become Apprentice Knights, Henry was a seasoned Adept Knight.

"He is really strong!" Behind the cavalry, beside Lukas, Amara commented, her eyes shining in admiration.

"Indeed." Lukas nodded. His eyes wide in amazement and his heart pounding in his chest.

This could be counted as the first real battle he was watching as he wasn’t able to see much of anything when Raymond and Arlo Bloodflame had fought.

Curbing his excitement, he swept his gaze over at the beasts crowding near the wall and realized there had to be at least a thousand magic beasts.

Noticing his gaze, Amara commented, "There should be around 5000 beasts beseeching the town. Fortunately, they are spread out, otherwise even with Knight Henry, we would have no hope of coming out of this alive."

Lukas nodded without saying anything and gripped his sword hilt tightly before pulling the sword out.

"You are going in?" asked Amara. Inwardly she was surprised because Lukas hadn’t shown any fear after seeing how many beasts there were nor did he seem disgusted and uneasy upon seeing the slaughter.

Shua!

Thud! 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Lukas jumped down his horse. Unlike the Knights, he wasn’t trained in battling while riding.

Taking a deep breath, he called the Basic Mana Manipulation Technique and circulated the mana within his ten mana nodes throughout his mana veins and pulled out some which he carefully controlled and covered his sword blade.

The layer of mana flickered on his sword blade, seemingly about to disappear but after a few moments, it stabilized which made him nod in satisfaction.

Then he looked at Amara who was staring at him with shock plastered on her face and solemnly said, "Yes. I’ll be staying behind the trainee Knights and will only fight the injured beasts who they haven’t killed yet to get used to fighting. Interfere only when I’m about to die."

Saying this, he walked toward the beasts with slow steps.

Thump! Thump!

His heart was beating increasingly faster and beads of sweat covered his forehead—he was very nervous and afraid... really afraid.

How could he not be?

He was just a normal person, someone who hadn’t even seen such bloody fights except in movies, but now he was going to participate in one where a slight mistake could claim his life.

However... he also felt a strange sense of excitement.
