Chapter 389: Meihua shutting up the gossips.

Chi Lian changed her solemn face as she turned to face her friends and sisters-in-law. A bright smile replaced the frown which she had on only seconds ago. "What are you all talking about?" She asked as she sat down.

Rize held up a fork that had some remaining butter from the pastry she was eating. She pointed it Mei Mei’s way and said, "We are discussing the bride to be and her friends whose gowns cost more than the salaries of all the Duan’s put together."

Chi Lian looked at the sparkly dresses and shoes and she agreed with everyone. "They did not spare any expense."

"Which makes me wonder what they plan to wear at the wedding." Xue Lili almost whistled. The ladies were dripping in glitter and looking like sirens that had just arrived on earth.

"Have you seen the ring on Siping’s finger?" Ruoxi whispered in a gossip kind of manner.

The ladies nodded. One of them even whistled.

Duan Siping’s friends from the teaching circle were also discussing the ring. It was a six carat rare black diamond ring surrounded by smaller regular diamonds. It was the kind of ring a man gave to a woman but in their case, Meihua had given it to Siping tonight.

Now, they were both wearing big diamond rings on their fingers but they had another set of smaller but even more luxurious and expensive green emerald rings which they planned to use at the white wedding.

Zhilan had paid for and designed the rings because of something to do with Meihua’s birth stone.

Siping’s friend Xie Xuan was both impressed and horrified by the size of the ring. "Is she trying to declare her ownership of your finger?"

Siping laughed, twirling a glass of champagne which he had not touched. "No, she declaring her ownership of me."

"We could all write papers on theories of ownership of people." Another said.

"I am pretty sure that is called slavery....no....human trafficking." A third whispered.

Siping rolled his eyes. "I can assure you all that my wife is not trafficking me or enslaving me."

"Technically she is not your wife yet." Xie Xuan amended. "She just owns your ass. But if a beautiful woman like her was willing to marry me too and lavish money on me, I would traffic myself to her in a heartbeat."

"Every time he blushes, she rushes over to kiss him somewhere on the face." One said.

They all laughed.

Siping blushed.

As if on cue, Meihua came over and kissed him on the tip of his nose.

He blushed again.

She took his hand and kissed the back, not caring who was watching. She stole him away from his friends, walking him to her parents who were chatting with his.

"I heard she is building a library on the campus in his name." Xie Xuan whispered. "That lucky blush prone son of a bitch. Why couldn’t I be born with a cute face too?"

The guests continued to mingle. The rich discussed stocks, equity, private islands, mergers and acquisitions. Others discussed where their outfits had been acquired and the exaggerated prices. The scholars discussed ethics and academics while trying to figure out what half of the desserts were made of and how to pronounce their names.

Somewhere during the interactions, Grandma Chi was overheard asking Siping’s uncle what he did for a living. When he said that he was a philosopher, she asked him if it was a real job.

Grandma Jun followed it up by asking if being a philosopher paid.

Most of the nobles and wealthy guests that were listening in on the conversation were confused until he added that he was actually a professor and earned a living through teaching and writing papers.

The collective sighs of understanding after he explained where quite comical.

The elders of both families gave brief speeches after everyone filled their stomachs on food.

Then, Meihua stood up to clear the air because a lot of gossip had been sipped more than wine at the party. She clinked her glass and everyone looked at her. Including the Emperor and Zhenzhen who were playing a card game at a table in the corner with royal agents mostly blocking them from the eyes of the curious guests.

"I know that our engagement has come as a surprise to many of you here. " She said, voice commanding, "There have been whispers that this is strange and he is a rebound. Others have said that I am taking him in as a pet and I will tire of him. The worst rumors I have heard have come from those who claim that he is a gold digger." She looked around the room, eyes focused and sharp. "I would like to clear the air tonight.

Siping is mine. I like him...no, I love him. Yes, I am older, richer and more dramatic. I will not deny being all of those things because they are facts. Just like it is a fact that Siping is the kindest, sweetest, most brilliant man I have ever met. He is a beautiful soul and our zodiac signs align." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Meihua rolled her eyes and some people laughed because they had a feeling that Zhilan was forcing her to say that.

Meihua continued, "He makes me laugh and care about things like the education budget and future of the youth. He makes me take recycling very seriously and anyone that knows me knows that I do not believe very much in recycling anything. He makes me think and he makes me believe that I am worth being loved and I am perfect as I am.

It is a miracle to meet someone that likes you as you come and does not expect you to change your ways or tone down in order to fit in with them and their ways.

Siping does not care about the hotels, the yachts, the ships and anything else that my family owns. He cares more about my feet being swollen after running around at work all day in heels.

He cares about my stomach pain after I forget to eat all day because I was in and out of meetings. He cares about my opinions on his papers and whether or not I find him adorable daily.

Most importantly, he cares about my family in small ways that many of them don’t even notice. Like trimming my grandmother’s favorite flowers, recommending books to my father, joining my mother and her friends in the evenings for square dancing.

He even joined my grandfather’s book club and they discuss old wars. He roped all of his friends into it, giving life to the club. My grandfather is proud because the club has heirs and they have added solving ancient crimes to their list of activities."

She looked at Siping, smiled and sighed. "What I mean is that he cares about the things and people I care about. He does not go out of his way to impress but does his best within his means and I am proud of him for that. So....." she raised her glass, "Gossip about that."

In one sip, she downed the contents of the glass and shattered the glass.

"Whooo." Zhilan screamed.

Meihua’s friends started clapping and the rest of the guests
