Lady Meilin is seduced by her green tea brother-in-law everyday-Chapter 373: Wuxi’s confession.
Wuxi laughed, a little bitterly. "Mei Mei, I used to take breaks from school to come and support you at your races. I used to write you letters all the time. I took a break from school for a whole month to stay with you after you were traumatized in the fire.
You were the most beautiful, smartest, funniest and most hilariously vengeful person I knew. But the competition for your heart was great.
All the boys in the empire and beyond liked you, nobles and commoners. Heck, you received more love letters than your brother! You had a crown prince at your beck and call and he was not the only boy in the royal family showing interest in you. How could I ever compare to royalty?
And then Mo Liang came along after the fire and you did not even realize that I had come to you...I just....never thought I had a chance with you. So I never said anything."
She felt a strange flutter in her chest--part flattery, part regret. Even though she never took the possible betrothal between them seriously, maybe if it was real, she would have thought twice before running off with Mo Liang. "Maybe you should have said something."
Wuxi sighed. "And risk losing our friendship? You cut off everyone that so much as looked at Mo Liang the wrong way. What would you have done if I said choose me, not him?"
She sat down on the bench, a sad smile on her lips. "I would have probably cut you off like I did everyone else."
He sat down as well and said, "I almost confessed but then I saw it on your moments that you were suddenly married and I figured...well, that was that."
She looked at the dogs, mind wondering as she imagined what life might have been like if he confessed and she dared to say yes. Would they have been happy?
Would she have come to love him? He was not her type, physically. She never loved him romantically but they had friendship and he had many good qualities.
Their families had friendship and history. A marriage could actually be built on most of those factors. It was no different from picking a partner from the Meilin list.
"Am I allowed to say it now?" he asked. "If it is not too late, I would like to say it. I still think about you. I still wonder."
She looked down at her hands and shook her head. "Wuxi, that’s....sweet or kind. And honest. And I am grateful to you for staying by my side when I had Mingzhu. I am flattered and I hate myself for disappointing you yet again. But I am seeing someone."
He went quiet.
Mei Mei continued. "It’s new. Perhaps a little complicated. If you have heard about my divorce then I am sure that you have heard about my new relationship. He is the kind of man that would do anything it takes to make me smile.
He is sincere and he loves my daughter like she is the most precious thing in the world. I have found myself, my purpose, true happiness and I want to hold on to these things." She laughed. "If he were to hear our conversation, he would throw a dramatic tantrum."
As if summoned by dramatic irony itself, a voice yelled from across the park.
"Mei Mei!"
She looked across. Her boyfriend Jingzhe was running toward them, his jaw tight an his eyes narrowed. His naked feet were like the naked expression of dislike as he looked at Wuxi.
She stood up to stop him from bringing out his green tea tactics.
He slid his arms around her waist and hugged her. "Sister, I missed you. I have been waiting for you since forever." He said coquettishly.
Wuxi’s lips thinned. He knew he was not Mei Mei’s type. She had always had a thing for the cute, pure coquettish kind. Maybe it was because she had a dominant older brother that overshadowed her so her type became younger guys she could pamper.
Mo Liang had been an odd choice. A fluke.
Feng Jingzhe fit the bill perfectly.
She sighed and patted his back. "A Zhe, you make it sound like I traveled out of space or something."
He buried his head in his neck, smiling cunningly. His eyes however were focused on Wuxi and there was nothing but hostility inside.
"Who’s this?" He asked her.
She pushed at him until her let go of her and then started on introductions. "A Zhe, this is Wuxi, an old friend."
Jingzhe looked Wuxi up and down. "Friend, huh?"
Wuxi stood, extending a hand. "Yes, friend. I have known her since she was in diapers. Nice to meet you."
Jingzhe didn’t take it. He could feel the provocation in Wuxi’s words. The bastard was showing off! Well, he could show off too.
"Sister," he pouted and returned to hugging Mei Mei. "I have not see you in diapers. It is not fair, I want to see you in diapers too."
Wuxi scoffed.
Mei Mei sighed. Was this something truly worth competing over?
"Sister, when we are old, can we walk around the house in nothing but diapers?" Jingzhe asked while making groaning sounds.
Mei Mei sighed again. She wondered if Jingzhe could hear what he was saying. Or if he noticed the jaws of people dropping around them. But she knew that even if he noticed, he would not care.
Jingzhe was shameless in his pursuit of her, and she liked that about him.
"Okay, okay." She laughed as she patted his back gently. "I promise."
Wuxi watched them, and his heart clenched painfully. He could see that he did not stand a chance with her again. He had watched her interview and heard what she said about how he made a reservation and how he was there for her.
He had saved her life and embraced everything about her.
Wuxi wondered if her would have stood a chance if he had been there for her after she gave birth. Maybe if he had not followed his dreams, he would be the one hugging her now.
It was too late however. Mei Mei liked Jingzhe, so did her daughter and so did the rest of her family. It was time to move on.
It was time to start considering the nice nurses his mother was recommending. Maybe one of them would be the one to walk around in diapers with him.
He stood up and picked up his bag of groceries. "I should go."
Mei Mei let go of Jingzhe and turned to Wuxi. "Are you sure? We were still catching up."
Jingzhe wanted to speak up and say that "he is sure" but he kept it in. A jealous boyfriend was one thing. A jealous and controlling boyfriend was another. One was cute and the other was a potential threat. He was cute!
