It was a few minutes past midnight when Mei Mei made it home. When she stepped out of her car, the sharp chill of the wind slapped her face. For a hot day, it was surprisingly cold in the night. Even the stars blinked in disbelief, their shimmer dimmed by misty clouds that had no business being in the sky.
The neighborhood was quiet, all the dogs seemed to be caught off guard by the sudden drop in temperature and decided to stay indoors. As she made her way to the gate, Mei Mei saw Tangning’s cat which was out on the prowl running back into the house. According to Tangning, it had a habit of staying out all night and returning in the morning. It appeared that the cat had reconsidered that decision this night.
She did not miss the presence of vehicles that belonged to the Imperial command lined up on the streets close to the house. In the vehicles, imperial soldiers were watching the neighborhood.
Mei Mei got the feeling that Mingzhe had come by to visit. This guess was convinced when she noticed that the light in Tangning’s bedroom was still on. Her silhouette could be seen pacing back and forth near the window.
"So, do you think she came over in person to borrow the sugar this time round?" C4 asked her.
Mei Mei giggled as she pulled the cashmere coat tighter around her body. She thought to herself that it was too cold a night for Tangning to be pining and craving Mingzhe. This was the kind of weather that was bed friendly. The woman should have been sleeping.
The butler opened the front door for her and closed the door quickly. "Young miss, welcome back. You should start taking an emergency jacket when you work late." He said to her.
Mei Mei nodded. When she reached the foyer, she was shocked to see Madam Feng sleeping on a couch. She had covered herself with a thick blanket. A newspaper had fallen out of her hands.
"Madam fell asleep waiting for you." The butler whispered to her.
Mei Mei was touched. Madam Feng really treated her as one of her own. She woke the older woman slowly, being careful not to startle her. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
Madam Feng opened her eyes and sat up slowly, yawning tiredly. "Meilin, you are back. What’s the time now?"
Two small kittens peeked out of the blanket. They had been cradling near madam Feng’s chest, soaking in her warmth. Their parents had decided to cuddle together and the wolf and tiger cubs were also cuddling together. It left the kittens with no choice but seek warmth elsewhere.
Madam Feng settled the kittens in her arms as if she was cradling a real baby. "Now that you are back, I can finally go off to bed. It’s cold, take a hot shower and go to bed. If you are hungry, there is some food in the kitchen."
Mei Mei had eaten a sandwich on the flight back. "I ate at the office. Is Mingzhu here or was she abducted by a loving relative?"
"In her bedroom." Madam Feng told her.
The two women walked up the stairs slowly. Before she could forget, she turned around and said to the butler, "I am expecting a new fridge, please inform the guards so that they let in the people from the company coming over to install it. You don’t need to watch over them while they are working, they belong to my family."
The butler nodded and wished her a goodnight.
She went to Mingzhu’s bedroom first and pushed the door open slowly. Mei Mei was surprised to see Mingzhe in Mingzhu’s bed. What made her smile was that Mingzhu’s foot was on Mingzhe’s face and her brother was sleeping so deeply that he had not noticed.
She got her phone and snapped a picture. It needed to be shared on weibo immediately. It was the sister’s job to embarrass her brother.
Mei Mei retreated and went to her bedroom. First, she took a hot shower and then she got into bed. Before sleeping, she checked her phone. Jingzhe had called her twice and sent a text that he would not be home that night, just like her.
Her mother had sent an emoji of a chicken egg!
Mei Mei frowned as she had no idea what it meant. Her father had invited her horse riding over the weekend, just the two of them.
