Chapter 274: The Empress’s last morning routine.

At precisely 5:00 a.m, Empress Hui opened her eyes. Unlike other people that were awakened by normal alarm clocks, she was awakened by the sound of a violin, played by an eight time national and international award winning violinist who never thought that after years of playing on grand stages, she would end up being a walking, breathing alarm clock.

Royal attendants were already inside her bedroom, like they were always. Two were spraying imported rose mist in the room, some were opening the windows and changing the curtains.

Two maids helped the Empress out of bed and escorted her before her smart make up mirror. They stripped her and she prepared herself for the judgement of the mirror.

Everyone in the room took a deep judgemental breath as they waited for the mirror to critique her as it always did. The critiquing was followed by advise which she always took. The mirror did offer some motivational phrases that were beauty related and she repeated them for ten minutes before the next routine.

An oxygen facial mask with real gold on the edges was pasted to her face for fifteen minutes. The Empress claimed it helped her skin breathe better.

Up next was a brief yoga session for her face which she practiced with a virtual yoga teacher.

And then came the dipping of her face in a bowl of ice cold water which was followed by a parade of serums, each meant to fulfill a specific purpose.

After this was a careful selection of what make up she would wear, depending on what her itinerary held. An assistant with skin like hers sat in front of her and the make up was tried on her skin. Empress Hui made comments like the skin was her own and not that of another person.

After the choices were made, she took three baths. One in milk, one in cold water and one in floral scented warm water infused with oils and special herbs.

Next ws breakfast. If she was not dining with anyone else, she ate alone just as she did this morning. She took a few sips of the best and most expensive tea, nibbled on something and spat it out before swallowing. All the while whispering mantras about how the breakfast would not make her fat.

At 7: 30, her hair routine was started. Three hair stylists performed their magic on her her hair, her make up was done and she was dressed.

At 8:00 a.m, Empress Hui emerged as usual, luminous and scented like a fresh rose. The sound of the violin accompanied her into a car as she set off to continue her fight against technology.

Standing in a window, the Empress Mother watched the convoy of the Empress set out for what would be her very last journey. She sipped on the cup of Juan tea’s latest milk flavor.

She was not alone, Chi Lian was with her, sipping tea as well and swaying her body gently to the sound of the violin. "Tong Er is such a great violinist. I have always thought that it was such a shame she was tricked into becoming the Empress’s alarm clock. After Hui’s death, I will make sure that she is signed to Phoenix Ent."

The Empress Mother scoffed. "She took the talents of the empire and turned them into her personal servants. She is the worst Empress in our history."

Chi Lian turned her head to the Empress Mother. "You can always change your mind about ending her before we do anything."

Some things weighed heavy on the conscience even if they were done for the good of the empire.

"I am not changing my mind. Only her death with reset things." The Empress Mother said with a finality in her voice. "After her, we can uproot the Hui’s slowly and destroy the malicious seeds they have been planting."

"And the royal house?" Chi Lian asked her.

The Empress Mother took a deep breath. There was some cleansing that needed to be done. Members of the royal family like Prince Long Bo needed to be handled. "One by one."

Chi Lian nodded and bowed politely. She turned to leave as she had to be within watching distance of the explosion.

"If the job is messed up, be sure to finish it personally." The Empress Mother told her.

Chi Lian did not turn back but she paused her feet. "You owe me."

The Empress Mother sighed. The debts that the royal family owed Chi Lian and her family were many. Each year that passed, the mountain grew bigger. She looked up at the sky through the window, the sun had risen a little late that morning. The rays were gentle and warm. The air was cool and the summer heat seemed to be a little forgiving.

"At least she gets to die on a good day." The Empress Mother whispered.

An hour later, Empress Hui was at the headquarters of Space M. She looked regal and donned the blue astronaut jacket which belonged to Mo Liang. Her choice of jacket had caused many frowns but she claimed she was separating the man from the uniform and restoring the honor of all space pilots.

A crowd had gathered outside the company, reporters swarmed the grounds. Their drones had been forbidden from flying in the air. Imperial soldiers monitored the grounds and searched anyone going in or out.

The Empress climbed aboard the space ship to conduct her inspection and Mo Bao followed her. He stood next to her and she was waved at the crowd before heading inside.

The Empress’s attendants, advisors and royal agents remained on the ground, visibly tense. Someone had suggested that the Empress carry out her inspection alone to prevent her opinions from being tainted.

She was not completely alone. The Vice Minister of Science and Technology was with her as was the Secretary General of Home Affairs. Comissioner-General Hui was also on board. There were other individuals too and altogether, forty one people were on the space ship.

They should have been forty three people on board but Lady He had opted not to go at the last minute because she received a phone call about her daughter having been arrested.

Viscount Huang had rushed out of the space ship and vomited. Phoenix news cameras had recorded him quite clearly as he vomited, stumbled and was carried into an ambulance.

Twenty minutes later, the space ship took the sky for a short flight. On the ground, the crowd cheered as if this was the first space ship to take flight in the empire.

Thirty eight minutes into the short voyage, the ship exploded.
