Chapter 263: Family traditions.

The plushie bandit was waiting with a cute smile, a toy gun and open arms that were begging for a hug. She was sitting on the bottom of the stairs, surrounded by a dog and cats that were seeking scratches and attention. The lazy or tired pets had already gone to bed. Meow Meow and Tofu were having dinner.

"Mommy, beautiful mommy, you are back." Plushie bandit said in a soft voice that could melt the hardest of hearts.

Jingzhe melted first, he fell to his feet and presented the stick plushie. "Baby girl, your handsome dad is also back." He walked on his knees, pushed General Big Yellow aside and hugged his daughter. "Baby, daddy brought you two stick plushies and an elephant and...."

Mei Mei listened with her lips turned upside down as she watched in judgement while half of the things Jingzhe had bought her were given to her daughter. Father and daughter raced past her as Mingzhu wanted to see her gifts immediately.

She was declaring her love for her new daddy, telling him how much she had missed him and promising to show him her curtsy and ribbon twirl.

If Mei Mei was a bandit, Jingzhe was the willing foolish get away driver who would also confess and go down for the crime on her behalf. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Chi Lian walked up to Mei Mei from behind, crunching on popcorn in a big bowl. "Tsk, she has him wrapped around her little finger."

"Mom," Mei Mei looked over her shoulder, leaning away to avoid the crunching sounds. "I did not think that you would still be here. Not that I am not happy to see you."

"Do you want some popcorn?" Chi Lian asked her. "I have always thought that people that ate cheese popcorn were crazy but your mother-in-law has a divine hand when it comes to cooking."

Mei Mei was also a skeptic when it came to cheese and popcorn. Those two things did not sound like they belonged in the same bowl. She was not ready to try it out, not after all the eating she had done. "I am going to watch the first five episodes of Whiskers 10 and either approve or send them back for more editing."

She slowly started to walk to the living room and Chi Lian followed, making smacking sounds with her mouth. It was like she was on a mission to information every pet in the house that someone was eating.

"Mom, could you enjoy yourself a little more silently?" She complained.

Chi Lian licked her finger and smacked again. "No, I have missed you for so many years. Now that I have you back, I am going to annoy you as often as possible as a punishment."

Mei Mei rolled her eyes. She would rather take the beating on her ass and put an end to it. When the door of the living room slid open, she came to an abrupt halt. It looked like her father was setting up a candle light movie date.

"Oh right, I forgot to tell you that your father and I are having a date night in your living room. You can join us if you wish. We would love the company, maybe we can all build a fort in the middle of the living room and start a camp fire and read bed time stories.." Chi Lian was already picturing it.

Muyang was nodding generously and looking at Mei Mei with stars in his eyes.

"Mom, dad." Mei Mei started in a soft voice as she wanted to let them down slowly. "I am twenty nine, not nine. The days of fake campfires and stories about princesses and heroes now belong to Mingzhu. Maybe the three of us can have brunch tomorrow instead. What do you think?"

It did not matter how soft her voice was or the alternative she offered. They still looked disappointed. They looked like people whose hearts had been broken by the one they loved.

As she watched them trying to smile and nod, Mei Mei’s heart felt uneasy.

"Oh what the hell!" Mei Mei muttered. "Lets do it. I will go and change into my pajamas."

"And bring your combs, I have not brushed your hair before bed in so long." Chi Lian shouted to her.

Mei Mei slow walked to the bedroom. She pictured how the rest of her night would go. Her father would feed her fruit or snacks and her mother would brush her hair. Her father would read the bedtime story or they would watch a movie. If Mingzhe was around, he would be pouting in the corner, working on some very important project [homework] and sulking about the fact that he was being forced to play.

She was only giving in because she was a parent that loved spending time with her child so she understood the need for her parents to spend time with her.

Mei Mei changed her clothes and took with her a laptop. She was still going to watch Whiskers 10, no matter what campfire rituals her parents wanted to partake in.

When she eventually made her way to the living room, fifteen minutes later, the living room had been transformed. The furniture had all been moved out, a large fort filled out the room, it was an actual tent. Two maids were carrying more movie type snacks into the tent.

"What were you thinking?" Mingzhe walked up to her from behind, shaking his head in disbelief. "We worked hard to get rid of living room camp and you resurrected it!"

She looked at him and sighed. "I had no choice, they looked like they were going to cry when I turned them down. It is just one night, suck it up."

Mingzhe groaned. "Mei Mei, mom is going to sing pretty little baby five times, at some point dad is going to ask you about your life goals and give you a lecture on economics before pulling you into a arm wrestling match for a prize which is peanuts, a bun, candy or something equally ridiculous.

Then will come the freaking fake fire that we have to blow and pretend to roast marshmallows over!! And the irritating nature sounds which is a recording of mom and dad pretending to be crickets, frogs and every other critter that lives in a forest."

Mei Mei laughed. Oh she had actually missed that.

Mingzhe continued. "Mom will turn on one of her movies that result in her crying like an unqualified actress trying out for a role. There is the pulling out of baby pictures and exposing our embarrassing photos.

Dad will overfeed us and complain about our lack of chubby cheeks which were adorable when we were babies. Then he will ask us to stuff marshmallows in our cheeks so that he can take pictures of us looking chubby.

There is the part where we stuff our bodies with pillows and sumo fight.

Lets not forget the unnecessary hair combing and styling as if we have a party to attend. And then we have the never ending games which you cannot quit no matter how sleepy you are.

Lastly, the owl summoning while balancing on one foot." He closed his eyes. Of all their home camping rituals, it made the least sense.

Mei Mei tapped his shoulder. "I think I have missed our wonderful family traditions."

She walked forward to enter the enter the tent.

"Think, Mei Mei the key word is think." Mingzhe shouted.
