Chapter 463: The Overly Patient Peng Huijing

While He Xingzhi was causing a commotion, Su Xiaoxiao and the others were completely unaware of it. In fact, even though He Hongni had caused a scene earlier that morning, it didn’t affect their good mood at all.

After a joyful celebration of the first day of the new year, the next morning, Jiang Yexun and Su Xiaoxiao made a phone call to Grandpa Zhang in Beijing to wish him a happy New Year. Grandpa Zhang on the other end of the line was naturally very happy and urged them to visit Beijing as soon as possible.

After hanging up the phone, Jiang Yexun also made a call to the people he had arranged in Beijing.

Su Xiaoxiao didn’t hear what was said on the other end of the line, but seeing his increasingly dark expression, she could guess it wasn’t anything good.

"If they’re making money so easily, then they don’t deserve even this little bit. Things like this are only fun the deeper you get," Jiang Yexun’s low voice carried a frightening malice.

Luckily, the colleagues beside him had taken their sunflower seeds and were chatting with each other, otherwise, they would have been startled by his tone.

Su Xiaoxiao bit her lip, looking at him with a worried expression, wanting to calm his emotions, but the person on the other end of the phone kept talking.

After a long while, Jiang Yexun hung up. It was as if he had mastered the art of changing his face, as the shadows on his face vanished instantly, and he even lifted his lips in a faint, almost imperceptible smile.

"Let’s go home," he said, reaching out and grabbing Su Xiaoxiao’s hand, stuffing it into his pocket.

Su Xiaoxiao tilted her head, looking at him in confusion. "Weren’t you just really upset?"

"I was angry at those people, but why should I take it out on you?" Jiang Yexun raised an eyebrow, speaking as though it was the most natural thing in the world.

Su Xiaoxiao instantly felt her heart warm. A soft, sweet smile curved on her lips, and she felt an overwhelming sense of affection for him.

"Well, then let’s hurry home. Today, Uncle and Aunt are going to visit my two older cousins, both of whom live far away. They have to prepare quite a few things," Su Xiaoxiao said.

Jiang Yexun nodded, paid the phone bill, and the two of them left.

When they reached a quiet spot, Su Xiaoxiao lowered her voice and curiously asked, "What did your friend tell you? You were so angry just now?"

"It wasn’t really anger, just impatience. I felt like things were moving too slowly," Jiang Yexun explained.

Although he couldn’t be certain that Peng Huijing was behind all the secretive maneuvers, he knew the woman wasn’t good news, and she certainly harbored ill intentions toward his little wife. That’s why he was eager to resolve the situation quickly.

"So they’re really keeping their word? After a single blackmail attempt, they haven’t done it again?" Su Xiaoxiao asked, surprised.

Jiang Yexun let out a cold, humorless laugh. "They’re smart about it, only blackmailing for about 800 to 900 every month, and haven’t raised it. That woman is patient; she’s willing to keep paying each time. She must have quite a bit of money."

"So, you want them to figure out a way to get those people to spend more, so they can raise the price for Peng Huijing’s demands?" Su Xiaoxiao immediately grasped what Jiang Yexun had been saying.

Jiang Yexun nodded. "They’re used to visiting underground casinos, but they’ve always kept it under control. However, with the crackdown getting more intense, the people who run these casinos are careful not to stir things up, so they never encourage others to take risks."

"I want them to arrange a few more setups, get those people’s appetite whetted, and see if that woman can still keep her cool when the blackmail becomes more frequent and the amount increases."

Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but admire Jiang Yexun’s cleverness. She immediately gave him a thumbs up.

When they got home, the Gu family had already prepared the gifts they needed to take to their relatives. There were two large baskets, each filled with identical items, but Su Xiaoxiao’s two older cousins were sitting there looking visibly nervous.

"Do we really have to go back this year? I... I just think it’s unnecessary to rush it. How about we wait for things to settle down first?" Huo Xiaojing suggested with a hesitant tone.

Shan Xinyun quickly nodded in agreement. "Right, I also think it doesn’t really matter whether we go back or not."

Since they had been pushed out by their families to become children sent to the countryside, they had essentially been abandoned. Over the years, the only contact they’d had with their families was through letters, urging them to work hard in the commune, save their money, and send it back home. There had never been any other support.

When their families found out they had gotten married, the only thing they were concerned about was the dowry, which they had demanded in full.

Now, they didn’t want to go back for the New Year. The last thing they wanted was for their families to ask them for more money. They just wanted to have a peaceful holiday, not a stressful one.
