Chapter 346: The Guilty Dong Family

Jiang Yexun wasn’t one to over-explain. He knew smoking wasn’t good for his health, and since he was six years older than Xiaoxiao, he needed to take good care of himself so he could take care of her in the future.

"I’ve informed the military leadership. They’ll send people to monitor the Dong family by tomorrow morning," Su Hongchen said, outlining the next steps. Then, he raised an eyebrow at Jiang Yexun.

Jiang Yexun seemed to understand something and smiled in response.

The three of them hurried back to the new house, each grabbing a sack before heading to the Dong family residence under the cover of night.

The Dong family, having been expelled from the steel factory for theft, couldn’t stay in the factory’s residential area anymore. So, their nearly ten-member family was crammed into a small apartment building.

The building had only one shared bathroom per floor, so anyone needing to use the bathroom at night had to leave their apartment. While some families might use a chamber pot, the Dong family was too large, and a small mistake could lead to a mess that would ruin everyone’s sleep.

Jiang Yexun and the others hid in the kitchen across from the bathroom, waiting until after midnight when the first Dong family member got up to use the bathroom.

Dong Jiaxuan’s older brother casually closed the door behind him and started to undo his waistband. But suddenly, his vision went black as someone clamped a hand over his mouth. A wooden stick was used to hit his stomach and legs, causing him to buckle in pain and give up any thoughts of resistance, only able to whimper in pain.

His assailant’s blows grew more vicious, and soon he felt blood rising to his chest. Before he could make a sound, he lost consciousness.

Su Hongchen, disgusted, kicked him to make sure he was truly unconscious before tying his hands and feet with rope and dragging him into the kitchen. His eyes were blindfolded, and his mouth stuffed with a greasy rag as they waited for their next target.

An hour passed before the second Dong family member appeared. Using the same method, they managed to capture five Dong family members by the end of the night. Men and women alike were viciously beaten by Jiang Yexun and his companions.

As dawn approached, knowing the streets would soon be busy with early risers, they quickly left the apartment building. But not before giving the five captured Dong family members one last brutal beating, gathering their belongings, and disappearing into the night.

Having stayed up all night, Su Hongchen went home to catch up on sleep. But just as he was drifting into his dreamland, someone started banging on the door.

Su Hongchen jolted awake, got out of bed, and opened the door to find his sister, who looked ready to explode after being woken up.

"Xiaoxiao, you go back to sleep. I’ll handle whatever’s going on."

He didn’t need to guess to know who was causing the commotion, so he didn’t want these annoying people disturbing his sister’s rest.

But Su Xiaoxiao was startled by Su Hongchen’s appearance. "Brother, did you go out to steal something last night? Those dark circles make you look like a panda."

Su Hongchen frowned. "You know about pandas?"

Su Xiaoxiao hadn’t expected her brother to be so sharp and felt her heart skip a beat. She quickly explained, "I read about it in the newspaper. It said pandas are some kind of diplomatic representative being sent abroad."

Although pandas had already become international symbols by this time, the average person was still struggling to make ends meet, so they weren’t particularly interested in animals. Fortunately, after her death, Su Xiaoxiao had become a fan of pandas, following them closely and knowing about their history. But she wasn’t sure if the media’s story was accurate, so she used it as a pretext, hoping it would hold up.

Just as Su Xiaoxiao felt like she was being scrutinized down to her hair, the door was knocked again, breaking Su Hongchen’s train of thought.

Su Xiaoxiao let out a silent sigh of relief and grabbed the back of the sofa to steady herself.

When Su Hongchen opened the door, he saw several angry Dong family members standing outside. However, their aggressive demeanor quickly faded when they saw Su Hongchen’s stern expression.

Madam Dong, trying to maintain her composure, gritted her teeth and demanded, "Was it you who came to our house last night and beat up several of our family members?"

"Are you trying to frame us again?" Su Hongchen sneered. "Do you know how serious the consequences are for slandering a soldier?"

The Dong family was momentarily stunned, worried they might face severe repercussions again. But with several family members lying injured in the hospital, they couldn’t let this go.

Madam Dong, determined, sat down on the ground and started wailing. "Heaven help us! They’ve bullied our daughter to the brink of death, and now they’re coming to our house to beat us! They’re trying to drive us to our graves!"

The loud cry so early in the morning startled everyone in the building, and soon the neighbors were out to see what was happening.

Seeing it was the Dong family again, the neighbors frowned in disgust. "Are you guys done yet? Didn’t you get enough of a beating yesterday? Now you’re looking for more trouble?"

The Dong family hadn’t expected the factory workers to still side with the Su family. They angrily pointed fingers and shouted, "Su Lianghui embezzled a ton of steel from the factory! How can you still side with him? Are you all planning to collude with him?"

As soon as those words were spoken, everyone else sneered and shook their heads.

"Don’t think we’re all fools! The combined monthly salaries of Director Su and Head Gu are worth a ton of steel. Hongchen is a promising young man, and their family wouldn’t risk everything for just a ton of steel."

In fact, everyone believed that it was likely just a clerical error in the accounts, something that could be easily uncovered by going over the books. Even if Director Su were corrupt, he wouldn’t have served as director for ten years and as secretary for more than a decade, only to embezzle such a small amount.

The Dong family had no way to refute the crowd’s comments, and a hint of frustration flashed across their faces. Although they quickly masked it, Su Hongchen and Su Xiaoxiao weren’t fools. The guilty looks from the Dong family members in front of them were as if they were in slow motion—impossible to ignore.

Su Xiaoxiao’s suspicions were confirmed, and she let out a cold laugh, impatiently saying, "If you have evidence, report it to the police. Anyway, your family is full of thieves. Who knows what kind of enemies you’ve made?"

She originally wanted to point out that this was likely a warning from the mastermind behind the scenes. However, she was worried that being too direct might raise the Dong family’s suspicions, so she abruptly stopped herself from saying the latter half. Still, the Dong family members, with their guilty consciences, immediately turned pale, as if they had just realized something.
