Chapter 302: Could She Be a Jinx?!

Su Hongchen sensed a sudden wave of intense sorrow from his sister. He furrowed his brows in confusion and looked at her closely.

"What’s wrong? Did someone bully you?" Su Hongchen asked sternly.

Su Xiaoxiao shook her head but didn’t reply. However, Su Hongchen, who had raised her since she was a child, and who was also the best soldier in the army, could easily sense that something was off.

As his thoughts raced, he recalled a question he hadn’t had the chance to ask. But before Su Hongchen could speak, a loud roar suddenly echoed from the base of the mountain.

Both Su Hongchen and Su Xiaoxiao froze, their breathing halting. Immediately after, the terrified screams of the villagers and the clanging of gongs filled the air. The wild beasts’ howls grew louder and more frequent in response.

Jiang Yexun quickly pulled Aunt Guo out of the kitchen, and Su Hongchen grabbed two hunting rifles from the corner, tossing one to him.

"Xiaoxiao, you and my mother should go hide in the cellar," Jiang Yexun instructed as he reached out to pull Su Xiaoxiao.

But afraid that her body might fail her at this critical moment, Su Xiaoxiao quickly ran to the water tank instead. Su Hongchen followed suit.

The two men swiftly moved the water tank aside and lifted the cellar door, helping Aunt Guo and Su Xiaoxiao down.

"Don’t worry, it’s just a pack of wolves. We’ll take care of it quickly," Jiang Yexun reassured her when he noticed his little fiancée looking up at him with worry etched on her face.

Su Xiaoxiao wanted to help, but she knew these two men would never allow it, so she didn’t waste time asking.

"You two be careful. Don’t worry about us; I’ll take good care of Xiaoxiao," Aunt Guo promised.

Just as Jiang Yexun was about to close the cellar door, Su Xiaoxiao hurriedly said, "Throw down the cleaver and kitchen knife. We need something for self-defense, just in case."

Jiang Yexun agreed, quickly fetching the requested items from the kitchen and handing them down.

Once everything was secured, they covered the cellar door and moved the water tank back over it. This would effectively mask their scent, and the beasts wouldn’t be smart enough to move the tank to dig into the cellar. If anything happened, the women could easily break through the door or the tank with the tools provided and wouldn’t be trapped inside.

Su Xiaoxiao watched as the light above them faded into darkness, and her heart sank. Even though Jiang Yexun had been safe in the previous life, the butterfly effect had already started, and she feared history might repeat itself.

"Xiaoxiao, don’t worry. Yexun is out hunting every day. It’s just a pack of wolves; he’s handled this countless times. He’ll be fine," Aunt Guo reassured, her voice warm with affection.

But in truth, it seemed Aunt Guo was comforting herself more than Su Xiaoxiao. Her slightly trembling hands, now cold with nervous sweat, betrayed her true feelings.

Smiling, Su Xiaoxiao squeezed Aunt Guo’s hand tightly. "Don’t worry, Auntie. My brother is very skilled too. Our family has no connections in the army, and he was able to rise to the rank of vice battalion commander at such a young age by completing one dangerous mission after another. This is just a bunch of wild animals, not armed enemies with advanced foreign weapons."

"Yes, yes! And your brother too! He’s so capable; they’ll definitely be fine," Aunt Guo agreed hastily. She then seemed to lose all strength, sliding down to sit on the ground.

Su Xiaoxiao, still holding her hand, decided to sit down as well. The cellar was warm in winter and cool in summer, so sitting like this wouldn’t make them cold.

The only issue was that the cellar was too well-insulated, just like in the previous life, making it impossible for Su Xiaoxiao to hear any noise from outside. This heightened her anxiety, and she began to worry that her mouth might have jinxed them.

How could it be that the very night she expressed concern about wild animals entering the village, it actually happened? Thank goodness no one in the village had heard her say that, or she couldn’t imagine the gossip that would have spread.

Unlike the calmness in the cellar, the rest of the village had erupted into chaos. People screamed as they rushed towards the center of the village, seeking refuge. Some headed for Leader Chen’s house, while others sought out the old hunters or Jiang Yexun.

At the back of the fleeing crowd were Zhang Tiewa and He Xingzhi. Both of them were armed with hunting rifles, and despite their fear, they had no choice but to grit their teeth and stand their ground.

When the villagers saw the two men with guns standing there, they ran towards them without hesitation. Some collapsed in exhaustion halfway, but the others were so desperate to find safety that they didn’t stop to help, too focused on saving themselves.

"Any man between the ages of twenty and forty should not hide behind us. Grab a weapon from someone nearby and stand in front. The more afraid you are, the more aggressive the wolves will become," Su Hongchen shouted to the villagers, raising his voice.

But after he finished speaking, not a single person stepped forward for seven or eight seconds. Even though most of the villagers were young and strong, they all shrank back when Su Hongchen and Jiang Yexun looked at them, as if terrified they’d be called out.

Su Hongchen and Jiang Yexun’s faces darkened instantly. They decided to ignore the crowd and turned to head back to their own house, but the villagers didn’t take kindly to that.
