Chapter 288: Waiting So Long, Just to Take Their Lives

She was caught red-handed. Unless Pan Yongsheng was willing to let her off the hook or she had concrete evidence to support her claims, she wouldn’t escape based on the evidence the authorities had.

Gritting her teeth, Dong Jiaxuan desperately argued, "I’m not trying to evade the law. I’m really a victim here. You can take me to the hospital for a check-up; I’m really pregnant."

"What does being pregnant prove? It’s not unheard of for pregnant women to still engage in such activities," Su Hongchen said coldly.

Left with no other option, Dong Jiaxuan turned to Pan Yongsheng, her eyes pleading for mercy, hoping he would take the blame out of compassion for their past relationship.

But Pan Yongsheng, eager to drag someone else down with him, was not about to let her go. "Don’t look at me. We both planned this together. You asked me to help you make money."

Dong Jiaxuan was stunned.

"Alright, the case is settled. No more arguing," the police said, cuffing the three of them and dragging them back to the Hong Feng Production Team.

Though it was winter and fewer people were outside, some were still out for a walk. Seeing the three being arrested, a crowd quickly gathered.

"Oh my, what happened?"

"Officer, why are they being arrested? Did they really break the law?"

The crowd bombarded the police with questions.

The police didn’t respond, but Jiang Yexun, usually reserved, spoke up and detailed what had happened.

Some wanted to liken this incident to what Xiang Hongmei did but swallowed their words to avoid greater embarrassment.

Su Xiaoxiao stood at the door that morning, eagerly awaiting the latest gossip. When she spotted Jiang Yexun and Su Hongchen, she noticed a crowd of over a dozen villagers gathered nearby.

Quickly, she grabbed Aunt Guo’s hand. "Auntie, let’s go take a look."

It wasn’t like she planned to visit those two in jail; this might very well be their last chance to see each other in this lifetime.

"Alright," Aunt Guo replied, equally fond of the commotion. Besides, with the police having taken them in, their clothes would be intact, ensuring that Su Xiaoxiao wouldn’t witness anything inappropriate. So, she made no move to stop her.

But by the time Su Xiaoxiao and Aunt Guo caught up, the pair had already gone to Leader Chen’s house. Standing at the edge of the crowd, Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t see a thing, so she pushed her way forward with determination.

"Hey, why are you shoving? We want to see too!" one of the aunties complained. But when she turned to see Su Xiaoxiao and Aunt Guo, her expression shifted, and she quickly fell silent.

The women parted to let Su Xiaoxiao and Aunt Guo through.

As they reached Su Hongchen and Jiang Yexun, the two men exchanged glances with her, exasperated. "Why are you here?"

"Since there’s nothing to hide now, why shouldn’t I come?" Su Xiaoxiao shot back, anxious that they might try to send her away.

"There really isn’t anything to see; the police will just say a few words and take them away," Jiang Yexun explained, hoping to prevent Su Xiaoxiao from getting into another argument with those two idiots—he knew it would ruin her mood.

But the more he tried to deter her, the more trouble seemed to brew. Before he could finish speaking, Pan Yongsheng and Dong Jiaxuan, standing at the front, spotted Su Xiaoxiao. Their eyes lit up, and they pleaded desperately, "Xiaoxiao, we know we were wrong! Please help us!"

Su Xiaoxiao leaned back slightly, baring her teeth as she looked at them, as if they were lunatics.

"You’ve broken the law and are facing execution. I’m just an educated youth; how could I save you?"

"But your brother is a deputy commander! He could help us avoid the worst. We could be sent to a farm for re-education. Please, save our lives."

Seeing Dong Jiaxuan’s tear-streaked face, Su Xiaoxiao smirked maliciously. "Do you really think I’d help you?"

Pan Yongsheng and Dong Jiaxuan paused, disbelief washing over their features. "You’re doing this on purpose! You want to see us suffer!"

"I haven’t done anything to you; I’m just watching you self-destruct," Su Xiaoxiao replied innocently, though her eyes gleamed with satisfaction. She had no qualms about showing how vengeful she could be. If she merely wanted them sent away to the farm for some education, why would she keep letting them off the hook?

If she’d only been a bit more forceful once, insisting they be sent away, Jiang Yexun would have made it happen. Her restraint had been deliberate, to make them pay with their lives for what they’d done to her in the past. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

"You’ve lost your mind! We grew up together! Even if we made mistakes, how could you put our lives on the line like this?" Pan Yongsheng shook his head in terror.

Su Hongchen’s expression turned icy. "What has my sister done? You reached out to people yourselves and accepted money. We just happened to find out."

"If it weren’t for her wanting us dead, how could we have been caught?" Dong Jiaxuan shouted back.

Su Xiaoxiao replied seriously, "Do you honestly think your actions wouldn’t come to light? Those men can’t keep their mouths shut. You’re shameless and want to drag other innocent girls down with you? Do you have any idea how hard the country has worked to protect female youth from such exploitation?"

Su Xiaoxiao felt a headache coming on from Dong Jiaxuan’s brazen attitude. She wanted nothing more than to slap some sense into her. Ignorance isn’t scary; what’s terrifying is being both stupid and malicious.

"I... why should I care about them? I just borrowed a bit of money from them. They didn’t want to help, so they forced my hand!" Dong Jiaxuan seethed, entirely blind to her own wrongdoings.

Seeing Dong Jiaxuan’s stubbornness, Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t be bothered to waste another breath on her.
