Chapter 235: The Job Goes to Xinyue

Jiang Xinyue finally sighed in relief and stepped aside to welcome them into the house. She wanted to serve them tea, but Su Xiaoxiao stopped her.

"Xinyue, you’re pregnant now, no need to busy yourself taking care of us. We’ll help ourselves to whatever we need," Su Xiaoxiao said.

Jiang Xinyue realized she was right and sat down on the sofa. Then she looked at Jiang Yexun.

"I’ll make some wheat milk. You two chat," Jiang Yexun said as he headed to the kitchen.

Once he was out of sight, Su Xiaoxiao quickly explained everything that had happened. Jiang Xinyue couldn’t hide her joy but then looked conflicted. "Since you negotiated for this job, it’s only right that you take it."

Even though people might look down on those working at a recycling station, it was still a state-employed position, earning an official salary. Plus, Xiaoxiao’s knack for finding valuable items among the junk would allow her to quickly set aside the best items.

"I need to stay home to make medicine and pills, which keeps me busy," Su Xiaoxiao said, unable to tell Jiang Xinyue the real reason she wanted to stay at Hong Feng Production Team for revenge. She had to come up with a plausible excuse instead.

Jiang Xinyue then remembered the whitening and moisture pills they had talked about before, which had earned them a lot of money. "Alright, I’ll take the job. But the money for buying it has to come from me and my husband," Jiang Xinyue insisted.

Just then, Jiang Yexun came out of the kitchen with two cups of wheat milk. Hearing Jiang Xinyue’s words, he immediately refused, "No need. We sold some old items in Dai City. You’ll get half of the proceeds, which amounts to a thousand. After buying the job, I’ll give you the remaining three hundred."

Jiang Xinyue grew nervous, "Did something happen when you went out last time?"

She knew her brother had a lot of money saved up over the years, but selling the family’s old items meant something serious must have occurred.

"I had to lend some money, and it takes about half a month to circulate back," Jiang Yexun explained casually. Su Xiaoxiao, knowing the truth, understood his vague explanation. She didn’t want to elaborate further to avoid causing more worry.

Fortunately, Jiang Xinyue wasn’t one to pry too deeply. She accepted their explanation without further questioning.

"Alright, since you’ve thought it all out, we’ll follow your plan. I’ll start working for the next couple of months, and once you return from Shanghai, mother can help me for another year and a half," Jiang Xinyue agreed.

"Great, we’ll come pick you up tomorrow morning," Jiang Yexun nodded and glanced at Su Xiaoxiao, noticing her cup of wheat milk was already empty. "Since we’ve discussed everything, we should get going."

"Why leave so soon? Stay for dinner," Jiang Xinyue said, reluctant to see them go.

"No, Uncle Wang is waiting to take us back, and we still have some things to buy," Su Xiaoxiao politely declined with a smile.

Jiang Xinyue, hearing they had more things to do, could only hold her belly and see Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun off.

After leaving the building, Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun walked around the street a couple of times. Confirming no one was following them, they headed to Big Gao’s place.

Seeing them, Big Gao flashed a big smile, revealing his large white teeth, "You two are right on time. If you came tomorrow, I’d have been gone."

"We collected some old items and want to see if you’re interested," Su Xiaoxiao said as Jiang Yexun took the bamboo basket off his back. She placed the two plates and the bottle on the table in the yard.

The plates were quite ornate, while the bottle was more simple and elegant.

Big Gao peered into the bamboo basket and noticed there was a book inside. After a couple of seconds, he realized Jiang Yexun had no intention of taking it out to sell.

"What’s the story with this old book? Not selling it?" Big Gao asked curiously.

Su Xiaoxiao shook her head, "No, I enjoy reading. Since it’s winter and there’s not much to do, I plan to keep it and study it."

Whether Big Gao believed her or not was unclear, but he dropped the subject of the book after her explanation.

"So, tell me about these three porcelain items. I’m heading to Harbor City soon and can bring them along to get a good price," Big Gao said, eager to learn more while thinking about his friends in Harbor City who had cheated him several times, causing a surge of violent thoughts.

"These two plates are from the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty. It was a prosperous time, so the porcelain was often very exquisite. The markings on the bottom and the distinctive translucent colors are typical of that period. They aren’t particularly rare, worth around three to four thousand each. If you find someone who doesn’t haggle much, they could sell for five thousand," Su Xiaoxiao explained, even estimating their value.

Big Gao, impressed by her knowledge, gave her a thumbs up, "That’s great. With such detailed information, I won’t sell these treasures cheaply again."

He then pointed to the small bottle, "What about this one?" 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

"This is from the Song Dynasty’s Ru kiln, but it lacks any official marks, suggesting it was meant for the imperial kiln but didn’t meet the standards and was kept privately. It’s worth less, around a thousand to fifteen hundred," Su Xiaoxiao provided the details and a price estimate.

Although the price wasn’t high by international standards, it was still a considerable sum in their local context, enough to buy two jobs.

"Alright, I’ll look for a reliable buyer who can consistently take these items when I’m in Harbor City," Big Gao said with a broad smile.

Though he managed the black market and made a lot daily, he had many people to pay. After sharing, he netted only a few dozen a day. Selling these old items in Harbor City, where he would keep 20% of the earnings, all to himself, was far more lucrative.

"We’ll leave the items with you. Pay us after you sell them," Jiang Yexun told Big Gao, preparing to leave with Su Xiaoxiao.

Big Gao was taken aback, not expecting him to leave without upfront payment. But he quickly smiled and shook his head, "Wait a minute. I recently got some chocolate from the provincial city. They say girls love it. Take some for your wife."

Big Gao went inside and came back with a square, large tin box. "Since it’s winter and you don’t go out much, and I’ll be away for half a month, take a large one so you can enjoy it at home," Big Gao handed the box to Jiang Yexun.
