What on earth is going on?

The moment Yujin realized the continuous sound he’d been hearing was the crashing of waves, he fell into a panic. He hurriedly scrambled out of bed and immediately ran out of the room. He dashed down the hallway in a frenzy, but every sight was unfamiliar. The paintings hanging on the walls, the antique carpet laid out on the floor — everything was different.

“Angela!”

Breathless, Yujin called out his daughter’s name.

“Angela, Angie!”

He shouted desperately until his throat felt raw, but no answer came back.

“Angie...”

He stopped in the living room overlooking the sea and muttered the child’s name blankly. Only the gentle sound of the waves returned. Yujin collapsed weakly onto the floor. He couldn’t understand the situation at all. Suddenly tears welled up. Just as he wanted to stop crying, a voice suddenly flew in from behind.

“Did you sleep well?”

Startled as if about to faint, Yujin turned around. For the first time, he saw a familiar face wide-eyed. Standing some distance away, the man watching him left Yujin speechless.

Winston.

Yujin just kept murmuring Winston’s name silently, but Winston only stared at him expressionlessly. The man, always impeccably dressed in a suit, looked completely different from Yujin, who was only wearing a shirt instead of pajamas. Winston’s gaze blatantly drifted to Yujin’s long legs exposed beneath the shirt. Instantly, Yujin flinched awkwardly and curled into himself. He felt humiliated at how ridiculously defenseless he was. All he could do was glare at Winston with hostility.

“What is this? Did you set this up?”

In a hoarse voice, Winston gave no reaction. Seeing him still expressionless, anger finally welled up in Yujin.

“Why did you bring me here? Where’s Angela? Don’t mess around, this isn’t funny at all.”

Yujin couldn’t hold back his emotions and breathed harshly as he spat out. Winston’s expression changed for the first time. Although all it was was a crooked smile at the corner of his mouth.

“Do you think this is a joke?”

Suddenly eerie, Winston shut his mouth. Yujin blinked briefly, then squeezed out courage to speak again.

“So? What the hell is this? Bringing me all the way here without any explanation or reason — if this isn’t a joke, then what is?”

His tone grew faster and his voice louder. He couldn’t contain his rising anger. Is this man even aware of what he’s doing? Unlike Yujin’s turbulent emotions, Winston remained calm. In a voice as usual, or perhaps even calmer, he spoke.

“I told you, if you have the child, it’s mine.”

Surprised by the unexpected words, Yujin paused. Winston sneered at him as if this whole situation was Yujin’s own doing.

“Do you think I’ll just watch you run away with another man? Not a chance.”

“Th-That...”

Yujin opened his mouth but couldn’t continue. He tried several times to speak, then finally forced out a question.

“Are you really crazy?”

Once the words were out, it got a bit easier. Stammering, Yujin struggled to continue.

“If I’m leaving, then I’m leaving. You can’t even stop my freedom. Besides... do you really believe it? That it’s your child? The DNA test hasn’t even been done yet.”

At Yujin’s rambling question, Winston chuckled.

“You said you were pregnant.”

“You never «N.o.v.e.l.i.g.h.t» believed me before, but now you do?”

Shocked, Yujin blurted out without thinking, making Winston narrow his eyes.

“So it was a lie?”

In that moment, Yujin realized he had fallen into his own lie. He couldn’t say no now. Trapped, Yujin had no choice but to change the subject.

“It might not be your child.”

Once you tell one lie, you have to cover it with a bigger one. Yujin was caught in irony. But the only thing he could do was keep pushing forward. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

“That could be true.”

Surprisingly, Winston accepted that calmly. But before Yujin could even hold onto a shred of hope, he continued.

“But what does it matter? No one knows.”

“...What?”

Yujin barely managed to utter those words. Winston gave a short laugh and twisted his mouth mockingly.

“Think about the will. There’s no mention of DNA tests or verification. We just have to have the child.”

Yujin barely found a way out, but Winston blocked it immediately. Yujin couldn’t believe what he’d just heard.

“So, you’re saying it might not be your child, but you’ll raise it pretending it is? You mean you’ll lie?”

“That’s not impossible.”

Winston brushed it off lightly.

“It’s not a bad idea for you either. Just keep your mouth shut and the inheritance will be yours. If you endure until then, it’s a happy ending for everyone.”

He wasn’t wrong. If Yujin really was pregnant.

“Then why did you bring me here?”

Growing anxious, Yujin asked urgently. Winston answered casually.

“You have to stay by my side until the child is born and the inheritance is settled.”

“What?”

Startled, Yujin asked again. Winston furrowed his brow for the first time.

“You’re not going to leave and screw me over by running off with another man, right? I don’t care whose child it is. You absolutely cannot leave until the inheritance is received.”

Only then did Yujin begin to understand his train of thought. Well, of course. There’d be no reason to do this other than the inheritance.

“I said I’ll be at the hotel. I never thought about running off with another man.”

Yujin tried to convince him, but of course it was useless.

“You think I’d trust you? Honey, you just said yourself this child might not be mine.”

Suddenly, Yujin was at a loss for words. Winston, on the other hand, seemed to have all the answers prepared. Maybe Yujin was never going to escape from the palm of his hand.

“Wha-What about Angie?”

Yujin hurriedly continued.

“What about Angie? She’ll be scared without me. I can’t leave her alone!”

This time he was sincere. And without Angela, Yujin couldn’t live. Shouting desperately, Winston again answered without hesitation.

“Don’t worry. The child is safe and well. If you behave here quietly, I’ll let you see her regularly.”

His intention was clear. Yujin had nowhere left to run.

“If I obey you?”

Gritting his teeth, Yujin asked. Winston only gave a faint smile in response. Yujin felt completely trapped.

What the hell is going on?

Sitting alone on the sofa, Yujin blankly recalled his thoughts. Winston had left the mansion saying he had to go to work. Watching him leave by helicopter, Yujin fell into complete despair. After frantically searching around, he slowly accepted the worst situation.

This was an island, and the only house was the mansion where Yujin had been. There was literally no sign of another person anywhere. Aside from the helicopter Winston came on, there was no way out.

It wasn’t far from the mainland.

It was lucky that the distance was close enough to travel by helicopter. But that didn’t mean he could swim across. Yujin put his head in his hands.

How could this happen?

He never imagined it would come to this. If he’d suspected even a little, he wouldn’t have uttered that lie, not a word. He tried to leave Winston but ended up being trapped.

If this keeps going, it’s only a matter of time before my lies are exposed. He couldn’t even imagine how furious Winston would be. No, maybe he’d just be baffled. He probably didn’t have high expectations for Yujin anyway.

Maybe he thought the child wasn’t his.

The important thing wasn’t whose child it was. As long as there was a child, the inheritance could be received — that was all that mattered. Perhaps it was a reasonable thought. He’d found a loophole in the will. In the end, Yujin had to stay here until the child was born. The problem was that Yujin wasn’t actually pregnant.

What should I do?

Just as his head was about to burst with anguish, unexpectedly, a hand of salvation was extended to him.
