In the shared history of the world of Valresta, all manner of governments, tyrants and saints rose and fell upon the waves of history, and their actions usually leave legacies that ripple beyond their deaths.

Amongst their numbers though, there is one group of people that seem to have absolutely nothing in common with each, and yet are still other known collectively/colloquialy as "The End Bringers".

These strange fellows varied in practically every regard from aesthetic to the type of company they kept with them, which is why many people assume that the group moniker was simply misattributed.

However, to the ones who notice the details about history, they realized that these so-called End Bringers actually shared a few commonalities.

First, their appearance always seem to coincide with the end of whatever ruling era was dominant at the time, well whatever ruling eras many considered to be rather hostile to the rest of the world.

For example, the Devout Heretic was there to end the Omni-Empire, the Storm Queen brought an end to the Floating Khan’s tyranny and the Nightmare King exposed the hypocrisy of the Dreaming Consortium.

Every single, last one of these ruling forces met an end most spectacular by the hand of the End Bringers, but many fail to realize how.

The second and third commonality, and this is one for those who paid attention to the artistic depecitions, was that every single End Bringer had a strange ring on their finger and was always accompanied by a group of strange warriors who were all larger than life itself and were just as unpredictable.

The Devout Heretic had the Clergy of Goetia, the Storm Queen had her Storm Knights and the Nightmare King had the Waking Terrors.

Now as one can imagine, any warrior with the title of End Bringer usually has a...mixed reputation to say the least.

They’re either considered the biggest blight in the history of the world or a most profound force of change for the better.

However, there was one End Bringer who was universally revered.

An End Bringer who was loved not just by the majority of the people of Stampeding Bison, but to the people of Dozing Salamander as well.

For it was with their appearance that the tyrant known as the Meteor Overlord was brought low, and an era of peace soon followed.

This End Bringer was known as the Star Caller.

To this day, it is said that on particularly starry nights, where one could see into the eternity of the night sky, people who knew their story would often make a wish.

Because it is often shared that the only reason why they appeared in the first place, and why they brought an end to the Meteor Overlord as well, was because someone somewhere made the right wish at the right time.

And if that all it took, then perhaps someone else could get their wish granted.

In some random place, for no clear reason.

...

’This is...a surprisingly dense amount of information on one of my predecessors...,’ Zhen Liu commented after processing all of the information he received from Blazejudicator. ’Why does it feel incomplete though?’

[It’s because a vast majority of your predecessors are still under some kind of seal and only the curators have access to the more personal accords,] Blazejudicator explained. [I have a lot more on the Damned Drunkard and the Storm Queen though, but the former will only be useful if you ever end up on Umbral Spider.]

’Please don’t jinx me.’

...Now back to the present...

^Are you...the Star Caller?,^ Lythero asked Zhen Liu in a rather point-blank manner.

To most people, asking this sort of question was meaningless in many ways.

Not a lot of people knew who the Star Caller was, as her historical relevance could be measured in millennia by this point in time, so it was presumed by many that they had died a long time ago or possibly ascended to a higher plane of existence of breaking through the cultivation ranks.

Additionally, nobody really knew what the Star Caller looked like due to just how varied the records about them were.

Some state that the Star Caller was a mere child, a little girl who seemed to care little for the bondage and practices of modern society, choosing to live in the wilds while dressed as a vagabond with a cloak of starlight covering her shoulders.

Others swear by the idea that the Star Caller was a divine herald of some kind, donned in armor of silver, gold and purple stones, and armed with a trumpet that caused the constellations to take form and dance to his tune.

Even more exaggerated tales say that even without the help of aether treasures, an understanding of [Law] or [Spatial Creation], the Star Caller was able to tear open the very skies and summon forth the spirits that have done nothing but watch the world all this time without rest.

So to ask someone, even if they came crashing down from the heavens, if they were someone as revered and mysterious as the [Star Caller] was foolish.

And yet...Lythero couldn’t help but to wonder.

His old masters, even his mother, had once discussed with him about the Star Caller and how they were an embodiment of wishes.

Perhaps it was foolish for someone like him to still have a wish, but...[Hope] is funny like that.

A long silence fell over the conversing fellows as Zhen Liu did not immediately answer Lythero’s oddly accurate question.

After all, by a massive technicality, he was the Star Caller’s successor.

’What do you think? Should I play into his expectations or not?’

[That depends, do you need another desire core based on Hope?]

’Seeing as I’m cut off from the library...fuck it, might as well give this a guy small smidgen of it.’

...

^Well, that’s a funny thing to ask,^ Zhen Liu eventually answered after several more minutes of silence. ^Now, why on Valresta would you make a guess like that?^

^Of course you weren’t...wait, what?^

Having his question turned around on him threw Lythero for a bit of a loop.

But at the same time, the fact that it wasn’t an outright refusal made the embers of his heart, the remains of a fire that he long thought since died, began to glow a bit hotter and a bit brighter than before.

^I mean, I can see where you’re coming from, since I essentially fell from the sky like a meteorite and destroyed your humble little shack with all the bluster of an elite warriors,^ Zhen Liu began to say after getting up from his seat and making it a show of gesturing to the ruins around him. ^Not exactly a way for some fantastic wish granter to appear, no?^

These words of Zhen Liu should’ve put a reasonable seed of doubt into Lythero’s heart, should’ve convince him that Zhen Liu wasn’t the Star Caller, but some errant expert that got lost or something.

However...

^...understanding the trouble they have brought, the Star Caller always made it a point to restore what they had done and make themselves sound like nothing but a passing dream...,^ Lythero muttered in rememberance of the old stories.

...it appeared to have the opposite effect.

At this exact moment, Zhen Liu could feel something [burning] in his left hand, and made sure to hide it from sight.

Not that it would do any good in a couple of moments.

Because now that Lythero had an inkling of a chance to change his life around, he decided to let that feeling run rampant.

^You said moments ago, that you were more than willing to provide recompense for my destroyed shack, right?^

^That is what I said, yes,^ Zhen Liu agreed, while knowing full well his words were being twisted around. After all, he needed the core in his hand to get a little bit stronger.

^If that is truly the case...then I know what that I want. And it’s not for my shack to be rebuilt or built better,^ Lythero said with his conviction growing stronger by the second.

^Oh?^

In that moment, as if to emphasize the emotional weight of his words, Lythero removed his cloak in order to show his face to Zhen Liu.

A face that carried several scars, and showcased features that were both native and foreign to the Dozing Salamander continent.

^I heard tale that the Star Caller was a maker of miracles,^ Lythero continued. ^Someone who can grant any wish, regardless of the cost or the impossibility.^

^That sounds about right,^ Zhen Liu responded in a non-committal manner.

^In that case, hear my wish, Star Caller,^ Lythero proclaimed while proceeding to get on his knees and bow with his heading touching the ground.

^Lift the seal that has been placed upon my soul. Give me the ability to cultivate once again, so I may get my revenge!,^ Lythero begged with incredible sincerity.

Needless to say, Zhen Liu knew for a fact that this was his heart’s desire in earnest.
