Chapter 674: Chapter 673: Creating Dreams

By now, if the Six-Eared Macaque had said anything more, it wouldn’t have been just sarcastic, it would have been an outright mockery, so he obediently shut his mouth, not planning to say anything else.

Because of Chen Nuo, Tang Xuanzang didn’t stay in the firewood room of a common household; instead, he found a temple nearby and asked the abbot for several guest rooms, where they settled down for the night.

Given the option to stay in guest rooms, of course, one wouldn’t choose a firewood room, and Chen Nuo was quite satisfied with this arrangement.

Chen Nuo originally didn’t plan to sleep at night, but if he didn’t, he would inevitably be spotted by the Six-Eared Macaque, so he might as well close his eyes and lie in bed, taking the time to rest his mind.

He lay in bed with his eyes closed, but in reality, he didn’t get much rest.

The three goddesses above were still dining at this moment, and he didn’t know if Wukong and Tian Peng could handle them. It was okay for the goddesses to squabble, but it would be problematic if they started arguing with Tian Peng or Sun Wukong—that would then be their fault.

While he was thinking, Chen Nuo suddenly felt a spiritual power transmitted from outside.

This spiritual power, carrying a hint of aggression, couldn’t be said to be particularly formidable, but still, it was somewhat uncomfortable, unlike the pure essence usually found in ordinary spiritual power.

Not only did this spiritual power carry aggression, but it also had a probing quality, circling around Chen Nuo’s room. Fortunately, with Chen Nuo’s cultivation, dealing with such a spiritual power probe was as easy as blinking.

However, this spiritual energy wasn’t strong, and Chen Nuo quickly realized that the one probing him wasn’t from Buddhism, but the Six-Eared Macaque.

If it was the Six-Eared Macaque, then that was really quite amusing. Chen Nuo laughed to himself and didn’t guard against this bit of spiritual power, letting it probe as it wished.

The spiritual power first made a round in the room and then targeted the person lying on the bed.

The spiritual power began its examination from the person’s feet and moved up to the head. After confirming that the person was truly asleep, it entered his brain.

Chen Nuo felt the spiritual power trying to pull him along, so he placed his consciousness upon it and let the spiritual power guide his sense of awareness.

In a moment of distraction, Chen Nuo found himself seemingly back at the place where he had first come to find Tang Xuanzang.

Chen Nuo was taken aback. What exactly did the Six-Eared Macaque intend to do? It surely couldn’t be to negotiate with him here—that was far-fetched. Even if they were to talk, it would certainly be while he was conscious. What counted was the like of this.

As he pondered, he suddenly found himself speaking uncontrollably, repeating what he had told Tang Xuanzang that afternoon.

"Following you to the Northwest fulfills His Majesty’s mission, doesn’t it? To just let me leave like this, would leave me feeling uneasy," he said.

Tang Xuanzang sighed. "The Great General is right," he said. "Well, then, that’s settled. Now that I’ve eaten my fill, let us start the journey."

"Alright," Chen Nuo heard himself respond, then he mounted his horse and led the way forward.

Up to this point, everything was nearly the same as it had been during the day. However, Tang Xuanzang was the one to mount first during the day since, as an escort leaving, one certainly does not mount before the other—it was appropriate to wait until after Tang Xuanzang was mounted.

Chen Nuo, riding his horse, had not gone far when the sky abruptly darkened, and clouds enshrouded the heavens. It began to rain heavily.

In reality, there had been no rain during the day, and the sky had been clear.

It seemed this was all fabricated by the Six-Eared Macaque, and for what purpose Chen Nuo could not yet fathom. Nonetheless, this scenario was decidedly eerie and could not be a good omen.

Being controlled, Chen Nuo continued forward, heading towards a patch of woods.

There had been almost no woods like this during the daytime journey, another creation of the Six-Eared Macaque. As Chen Nuo rode into the forest, a dark creature suddenly leaped out from some unknown place.

The monster was immense, and as it stood before Chen Nuo, he realized that it was a gigantic spider creature.

Each of its legs was covered with clearly visible fuzz as the spider spread out its eight legs and scuttled rapidly toward Chen Nuo.

Chen Nuo moved his hands and found he could control his limbs again, guiding the horse to dodge the spider.

After being dodged, the spider turned towards Tang Xuanzang and the Six-Eared Macaque behind him.

Tang Xuanzang, also terrified upon seeing the spider, shouted to Chen Nuo, "Great General! Save me!"

According to the character of Tian Peng, he should have drawn his sword and charged forward. According to the mindset of an ordinary person, he should have recoiled. Chen Nuo hesitated, trying to choose between adhering to Tian Peng’s character or a normal person’s reaction.

But in the eyes of Six Ears, it seemed that the General was too scared to move forward.

This was exactly what he had intended.

Although this was a dream, the dilemma of stepping forward or not was very real right now.

As the Six-Eared Macaque had calculated, if Chen Nuo stepped forward, he would be devoured by the spider. On the second day, and the days following, he would ensure this ordinary man had similar nightmares until he was too afraid to continue accompanying Tang Xuanzang.

If Chen Nuo did not step forward, although it was but a dream, he would certainly feel guilty towards Xuanzang the next day. After that, he would still be tormented by such dreams until he was forced to leave.

The Six-Eared Macaque thought he had considered everything thoroughly, and this did not even count as harming an ordinary person; without harming, yet making the man leave, was the best outcome he could hope for.

Chen Nuo smiled. Everything the Six-Eared Macaque was thinking, he knew.

He had initially thought the Six-Eared Macaque would come up with some method to deal with him, but after all this trouble, his plan was just this.

He didn’t know whether to call him thorough or naive.

If that was the case, then he was more than happy to oblige and play along with Six Ears.

Chen Nuo drew his sidearm, pulled on the horse, and shouted to Xuanzang, "Master! Don’t worry, I am coming to save you now."

With his sidearm in hand, he charged at the beast, slashing it and making the creature howl in pain. The monster then shifted its attention away from Xuanzang and began to attack Chen Nuo anew.

Six Ears was somewhat surprised. He had not expected this ordinary man to be so brave. He had thought Chen Nuo would turn tail and flee, not that he would actually have the guts to draw his weapon and charge.

Although this was the world of dreams, people in dreams don’t think they are in a dream world; they believe they are still living in reality.

The actions and behavior he was displaying now, if they were to happen in real life, he would not back down either, just like he was doing in the dream, drawing his sword to face the challenge.

Chen Nuo agilely dodged the monster and charged at the beast with his sidearm for another strike.

Now Six Ears was even more astonished. It was one thing to dodge and attract the monster’s attention, but it took immense courage to actually go after the monster with a sword.

Six Ears gave Chen Nuo a strange look, thinking he must either be very courageous or completely brainless to dare confront such a monster face to face. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

The monster was a creature of dreams; within the dream, it was tangible, and unless the dream was dissolved, it could not be controlled by any person or thing.
