Chapter 108: There’s no need for you to do anything brother.

They had all been wondering, of course, just who this magnificent and terrifying creature might be to arrive in such grand fashion, with her self-driving carriage and her contempt for common courtesy.

But to learn that she was actually a member of the royal household, that the one who’d caused all this commotion was none other than a princess of the kingdom itself, that revelation struck them with a force similar to a physical blow.

Murmurs rippled through the crowd as connections formed in their minds. They belived her to be the youngest princess, without hesitation they all came to the same conclusion.

Everyone knew that the third princess was the most talented of the three royal sisters, the one whose magical gifts had been whispered about since her infancy, the one most likely to eventually claim the throne if rumors were to be believed. And here she stood, in the flesh, furious and magnificent and absolutely terrifying in her self-righteous anger.

Most of those present found their earlier vexation at her reckless driving suddenly evaporating, replaced instead by a creeping sense of pity for the first son of the Morningstar household. He might technically be in the right here, Sure he had only been trying to save someone from being trampled, but none of that would matter in the slightest when weighed against the wrath of a princess. The law was one thing, but royal displeasure was quite another, and the distance between the two had destroyed far more prominent families than his. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

"Since I’m feeling generous today, I’ll allow you to choose how you wish to depart from this world." The princess’s voice had gone cold now, cold as midwinter frost, and the venom burning in her eyes made it clear that this was no idle threat delivered for dramatic effect. She fully intended to carry through with her words, and nothing anyone said or did would change that. "You have three breaths to make your choice."

She began counting immediately, not waiting for acknowledgment or response, her finger rising with each number as if she were a teacher patiently waiting for a slow student to answer a simple question.

Leo took an instinctive step forward at the sight, his hand moving toward the weapon at his hip, but he stopped himself when he caught the look in his brother’s eyes. Lucuis met his gaze for just a moment, and in that brief exchange, Leo saw something that made him halt in his tracks, not fear or desperation, but calm reassurance, the look of someone who knew something that no one else in this situation quite understood.

Before the princess could reach the end of her count, before anyone could move or speak or even draw another breath, a lone figure materialized in the sky above the assembled examinees as if he’d simply stepped out from behind some invisible curtain that separated this world from another. There was no flash of light, nor dramatic sound, or warning whatsoever. One moment the air was empty, and the next, a man hung there as casually as if he’d been standing there all along.

"I’m afraid that violence against another examinee is not something that can be condoned when one is standing at the exam venue itself." The figure’s voice carried easily across the entire square, not loud, not forceful, but possessed of some quality that made it impossible to ignore or misunderstand.

As he spoke those words, Lucuis felt the invisible bindings holding him captive simply dissolve, fading away like morning mist under sunlight, so completely and effortlessly that he might have believed they’d never existed at all if not for the lingering memory of their pressure.

The third princess’s expression shifted instantly, a look of absolute certainty and control replaced by something far less pleasant, the face of someone who had just been reminded that there existed powers in this world beyond her own considerable abilities.

She knew better than to pour out her fury upon this newcomer, that much was obvious from the way she suddenly reined in her temper and composed herself, though the effort required to do so was clearly costing her dearly.

"Forgive my rudeness, sir, but I was merely engaged in correcting a wrong that had been committed against me." The third princess’s voice had shifted into something approaching respect now, of course her respect was faked, anyone could easily tell from the tightness around her eyes and the rigid set of her jaw.

She gestured toward Lucuis with a dismissive flick of her wrist, as if she were pointing out some particularly unpleasant piece of refuse that had somehow found its way into her presence. "This wretched trash here was the one who saw fit to obstruct my path and interfere with my carriage. Surely you would agree that the right to exact justice for such an offense falls well within my prerogative as a member of the royal household itself."

Her words settled over the assembled crowd like a heavy blanket, and despite the very real fear that this terrifying princess inspired in their hearts, a single thought crystallized in the minds of nearly everyone present with absolute and undeniable clarity. This so-called princess, this woman who claimed royal blood and divine right, was without a shadow of a doubt the most shameless creature any of them had ever encountered in their entire lives.

She had charged through a crowd of people without the slightest concern for their safety, Not to mention nearly trampling a young nobleman to death beneath the hooves of her reckless beasts, and now she stood here with all the confidence in the world claiming to be the victim in need of justice.

Not a single person dared to voice this thought aloud, of course. Some truths, no matter how obvious they might be, were simply not worth dying for, and the look in that princess’s eyes made it abundantly clear that she was perfectly capable of making anyone who crossed her regret that decision in the most permanent way imaginable.
