Invincible Dad-Chapter 760 A Box of Green Fish - Part 1
One.
It was really just one grape.
Xu Lai hadn’t expected his Senior Sister to hold such a grudge over a single grape. He was chased and beaten across half the mountain before Yu Guiwan finally calmed down.
She waved her small fists. "Do you dare to steal from me again?!"
Xu Lai repeatedly insisted he wouldn’t dare.
Yu Guiwan’s lips curved slightly as she sat back on the swing. "I’ll let you off this time."
The swing wasn’t large; at least, not like in their childhood when it could hold two people. Now, with just Yu Guiwan sitting on it, it seemed a bit small.
Xu Lai silently walked behind his Senior Sister and gave her a gentle push, sending the swing into a shallow arc.
The years had passed, and things had changed.
His Senior Sister kept whispering, telling him about her recent, placid days at the old Sect Gate in the Heavenly Court.
But she sounded very happy as she spoke.
"A while back, I even went to the Rouge shop down the mountain."
Yu Guiwan blinked. "One hundred thousand years have passed, and the Rouge in the shop is still the same as before. There’s been no improvement at all."
I should have swept through Earth before coming to the Immortal Domain and brought back a hundred tons or so of cosmetics and skincare products for Senior Sister. Xu Lai thought with sudden regret.
"Don’t you dare buy me any."
Yu Guiwan pinned up her hair and laughed self-deprecatingly. "I’ve long since passed the age for applying Rouge."
"Indeed," Xu Lai nodded.
Those words earned him another beating from Yu Guiwan.
Xu Lai was extremely frustrated. He still had more to say.
Senior Sister doesn’t need any Rouge or powder to begin with.
Her natural beauty was a gift that couldn’t be denied; that was the perfect way to describe Yu Guiwan. It was a pity his Senior Sister hadn’t given him the chance to say so.
Night fell late in the Immortal Domain.
Xu Lai went down the mountain to invite Wang Bainian and his wife, Wang He, to have dinner with them.
Seemingly embarrassed about always freeloading, Wang Bainian came carrying two large baskets. One was filled with fresh plums, and the other was filled with an assortment of fresh vegetables and fruits.
"You’re too kind, Mr. Wang," Yu Guiwan said with a light laugh.
"You are the one who is too kind, Fairy," Wang Bainian replied, feeling a little anxious.
He and his wife knew that the people living on this mountain were no mere mortals but immortals who could ride the clouds. They knew their daughter had managed to enter an Immortal Gate, and they’d heard it was thanks to the young gentleman before them.
"Whether up the mountain or down below, we’re all neighbors. There’s no need for such formalities."
Xu Lai poured Wang Bainian a cup of wine and smiled. "It’s been a long day. Care for a drink?"
"It won’t be a problem."
Wang Bainian grinned. "I’m just afraid my wife will think it’s too much hard work later tonight."
"What nonsense are you talking about!" the beautiful Wang He exclaimed, her face burning as she pinched her husband’s arm hard.
Xu Lai couldn’t help but laugh. "Then you two had better keep your voices down. My Senior Sister’s Divine Sense is quite formidable."
Then he got pinched, too.
Yu Guiwan’s smile was warm. "Xu Qingfeng, you’re getting bolder and bolder, even daring to tease me now."
「The moon was bright, the stars sparse.」
A tipsy Wang Bainian left, supported by his wife.
Xu Lai lay on the grass, pillowing his head on his left arm. He gazed at the twinkling stars, reaching out with his right hand as if trying to pluck one from the sky.
Yu Guiwan sat on the ground with her chin resting on her knees, also staring into the starry expanse in a daze.
"I always used to feel that the heavens were so far from the earth, that the stars were completely unreachable," Xu Lai said wistfully. "Now... the sun and moon are within my grasp, and I can go anywhere in the world. It feels like a dream."
"Then let’s just treat it as a dream," Yu Guiwan said softly. "Go to sleep. I’m here."
Xu Lai closed his eyes. Listening to the gentle breeze and feeling the starlight wash over him, he soon fell asleep.
「A dream of one hundred thousand years.」
Xu Lai dreamed of when he first arrived at the Sect Gate, of cultivating and playing with his Senior Sister and two Senior Brothers. He also dreamed of his Master, who was always reminiscing.
Later, as the world was thrown into turmoil, Xu Lai left the Eastern Desolate Domain, carrying the great dream of the Human Race’s revival on his shoulders as he forged ahead alone in the vast Immortal Domain.
In this dream, however, Xu Lai was no longer as resolute as he had been in the past; instead, he watched everything unfold like a spectator.
Perhaps it was because he was lying in the Heavenly Court, with his Senior Sister sitting beside him, or because he had already experienced it all.
「He slept till dawn.」
Aside from the period after he arrived on Earth a year ago, Xu Lai had rarely managed to rest for a full night without a care in the world. It wasn’t that he couldn’t, but that he was unwilling.
Only when he was with his wife, daughter, Senior Sister, and other loved ones could Xu Lai let down all his defenses.
Only in their presence was he not Xu Qingfeng, the man who carried the burden of all life in the Immortal Domain, but simply Xu Lai, the man who could live for himself.
Yu Guiwan had meditated all night.
Xu Lai got up and went to the kitchen to make a simple breakfast for his Senior Sister and himself. The moment the aroma began to drift out, Yu Guiwan opened her eyes and walked over.
"What’s the plan for today?"
"Does Senior Sister have something to do?" Xu Lai raised an eyebrow.
"Indeed, there is something."
Yu Guiwan hesitated, seeming to find it difficult to speak. "Never mind. It’s nothing."
A strange look came over Xu Lai’s face. "Senior Sister, don’t tell me... you’ve found someone you fancy and want your Junior Brother to help you tie him up and bring him back?"
He had expected her to deny it, but to his surprise, she said nothing.
Xu Lai gasped. "Is it the master of some Holy Land, the leader of a Tao Lineage, or maybe a youngster who’s a few tens of thousands of years old? Just tell me, Senior Sister, and I’ll go right now and..."
"It’s a seven-year-old boy."
"Senior Sister, you... that’s going a bit too far."
Xu Lai’s face stiffened. "He’s seven! He’s just a child."
"That’s all the more reason not to let him get away."
"..."
Xu Lai gritted his teeth. "If Senior Sister likes him that much, then I’ll be the villain for you this one time."
"Put away your filthy thoughts."
Yu Guiwan shot Xu Lai a look. "He’s a stray child the owner of the Rouge shop at the foot of the mountain took in. He reminds me a little of Second Senior Brother when he was a child."
Second Senior Brother!
Xu Lai’s pupils shrank. He said hesitantly, "Could he be the reincarnation of Senior Brother Song?"
Not waiting for his Senior Sister to reply, Xu Lai said urgently, "Let’s go take a look now."
Yu Guiwan said wistfully, "Qingfeng, you know as well as I do that there are no two identical flowers in the world. Even if he were the reincarnation of Junior Brother Song, he wouldn’t be the same person. Besides, he isn’t."
"I just feel sorry for him. The Rouge shop owner has a kind heart, but a lot of the children on that street bully the stray boy. I was wondering if I should bring him back to the Sect Gate."
"You’re right, Senior Sister," Xu Lai said, then grew thoughtful. If this boy has an affinity for cultivation, I’ll send him to the Liuyun Sect where Huang Fu is. If not, this vast Sect Gate could certainly use someone to do odd jobs.
His Senior Sister had a disciple, Wu Ying, but she wasn’t at the Heavenly Court. After helping their Master resolve his obsession, she had chosen to travel the Immortal Domain for training.
"Mhm," Yu Guiwan nodded.
The two of them headed down the mountain together, not flying, but walking.
What once seemed like an incredibly long journey now felt surprisingly short. After just six hours, they arrived at the small town at the base of the mountain.
"Shopkeeper, I’d like a box of your most expensive Rouge," Xu Lai said as he entered the shop.
"Don’t listen to him."
Yu Guiwan glared at her Junior Brother, then turned to the shopkeeper. "Just a box of Lüyu will do."
Lüyu was the name of the Rouge, and it wasn’t expensive.
Xu Lai coughed. He had no worldly money on him, so he could only concede, "Listen to my Senior Sister." 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
"Alrighty."
The shopkeeper was chubby like Shan Baiwan and looked very friendly. He bustled about to pack their item.
Xu Lai finally saw him: a little boy hiding in the inner room, peeking out at them.
As if sensing the customer’s gaze, the little boy broke into a wide, simple, and honest grin.
