Chapter 92: Healed

Rory didn’t want Nix worrying about her any longer.

He had fought without pause the entire day, pushing a body that had only just recovered past its limits again and again. Even without saying a word, the faint stiffness in his movements and the dull fatigue in his eyes betrayed how exhausted he truly was.

"Let’s go back to the cabin," Rory said softly, breaking the silence. "Jasper called me several times earlier. I told him I’d return the call once everything here was settled."

She paused, then added in a tone that left no room for argument, "When we get back, you take a shower first. I’ll talk to Jasper, then help you calm your mental state. After that, we sleep—properly. Tomorrow, we’ll help everyone repair the damage together."

With that, she turned to the nearby Alliance staff and urged them to rest as well. Tonight, nothing mattered more than survival. Wounds needed tending, nerves needed time to settle, and lives needed to be preserved. Repairs, reports, and rebuilding could wait until morning.

Nix didn’t argue.

Instead, he shifted immediately, his form expanding as he transformed into his massive, snow-furred liger shape. Muscles rippled beneath his thick white coat, power radiating from every movement as he lowered himself slightly beside her.

"Female Master," he said, voice deeper in this form, "the hover vehicle’s unusable right now. Ride on me. I’ll get us back faster."

Rory didn’t waste time debating. She climbed onto his back without hesitation, fingers sinking into his dense fur as he launched forward. The world blurred into streaks of silver and shadow as Nix surged across the terrain, carrying her safely away from the shattered battlefield and back toward the cabin.

The cabin stood exactly as they’d left it.

Untouched. Unburned. Every wall, every surface pristine beneath the night sky.

But the moment they stepped inside, frantic chirping exploded through the space—sharp, angry, and relentless, echoing off the walls with unmistakable fury.

Rory and Nix exchanged a look.

"Burnt Dumpling?" Rory’s heart skipped. "Did something happen?"

They didn’t wait for an answer. Together, they sprinted down the corridor toward the bedroom.

Inside, chaos greeted them.

Burnt Dumpling stood atop the desk, claws dug firmly into the rim of the flowerpot. One wing was planted squarely on his hip, while the other jabbed furiously toward the thin plant growing inside, his entire posture radiating outrage—as if he were in the middle of delivering a very heated lecture to the offending greenery.

"Chirp! Chirp—chirp! Chirp, chirp, chirp!"

You useless stick! Is this really all you’ve got?! That pathetic little flower?! I didn’t even get to speak to her before I reverted—do you have any idea how humiliating that was?!

"Chirp! Chirp! Chirp—chirp!"

Don’t pretend you’re unconscious! You did this on purpose, didn’t you?! I risked my life dragging you back here, and this is how you repay me?! Yuel, stop playing dead—I know you’re awake!

Nix stared, dumbfounded.

This was the first time he had ever seen Burnt Dumpling this furious.

He leaned closer to Rory and whispered, "Female Master... I’m fairly certain Burnt Dumpling is cursing at that plant."

Rory nodded solemnly. "I’m afraid you’re right."

What on earth had Yuel done to provoke this level of rage?

Neither of them dared step closer.

Sensing Rory’s presence, the plant finally stopped pretending.

A faint rustle passed through its leaves.

"Your Highness," Yuel’s calm voice sounded, "please temper your anger. If I truly intended to deceive you, why would I have traveled all this way at your side?"

Burnt Dumpling froze—but said nothing.

"If I had wished you harm," Yuel continued evenly, "I would not have risked myself to save you when that high-tier Chitinid attacked."

Still no response.

"And if I had meant to betray you," Yuel added quietly, "I would never have exhausted my own ability to help you fight. Your current condition is not my doing—but mine is entirely yours."

His leaves trembled faintly.

"If not for you, I would still be the First Commander, respected by all Dragon Kind. Not..." He paused. "...a branch in a pot."

That finally did it.

Burnt Dumpling faltered, beak parting—but no words came.

The room fell into silence. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Yuel relaxed at last, allowing his newly grown leaves to unfurl slowly.

Yes, he had done it deliberately.

Four petals had been enough to annihilate Nae Mandian. And he had promised Rory he would grow another leaf that day.

He never broke his promises.

Seeing Burnt Dumpling finally quiet, Nix moved quickly. He grabbed the bird by the scruff and turned toward the door.

"Enough. Stop bullying the Divine Tree. If anything happens to it, you’re in serious trouble," he muttered. "Honestly, where did you even go today? You look like you crawled out of a swamp."

Mud smeared across Nix’s hand.

He recoiled instantly. No way was he letting Burnt Dumpling anywhere near Rory like this.

"I’ll wash him," Nix said firmly. "Female Master, call Jasper first. I’ll come back and keep you company afterward."

After everything that had happened, he refused to leave her alone—even for a moment.

"And," he added quietly, "just in case... if you have nightmares again."

"Alright," Rory agreed.

She watched them leave, then closed the bedroom door.

Warmth pressed against her back.

"Rory," Yuel murmured near her ear, his voice gentle and low. "Your heart feels heavy. Were you frightened today?"

She turned.

He stood there exactly as he had in her dream—except now, his eyes were softer, steadier.

"Yuel..." Relief flooded her chest. "You’re healed?"

He nodded. "Your blood accelerated my recovery. I’ve stabilized—but I can’t maintain this form for long."

Then, firmly, "From now on, you are not allowed to feed me blood again."

Rory nodded immediately.

"I know," she said—already lying to herself.

A perfect compromise: he warned her; she ignored him.

"You know what happened today?" she asked.

Yuel inclined his head. "Plant-aligned Etherians can commune with vegetation. Wherever plants exist, we can perceive what unfolds there."

So he had seen everything.

Rory exhaled slowly, tension finally easing from her shoulders.
