Chapter 56: Foolish

This was everything Jasper had come to understand about Rory during the past few days he had spent at her side.

He had given her nearly all of himself—his patience, his gentleness, his loyalty, and his devotion without reservation. The only part he kept carefully hidden was the darkest sliver of his soul, reserved for actions she could never know about and would never forgive. Things like poisoning Gina and her mates.

But he did it for Rory.

And precisely because of that, he could never let her find out. Never.

The thought alone was enough to make his chest tighten. Rory was too kind, too honest. If she knew what he had done, she would be hurt—and worse, she would blame herself. Jasper could endure anything except that. His loyalty to her was absolute, unwavering, and total, even if it meant becoming someone she would despise in the shadows.

The moment Jasper stepped out of the villa, his obedient, gentle façade fell away like a discarded mask.

His gaze lowered, long lashes casting shadows over eyes that churned with dark violet fury. Beneath the surface calm, a feverish, bloodthirsty madness simmered, dangerous and barely restrained. The Empire’s residential protections for females were little more than ceremonial barriers. They were designed to deter average threats—not to stop a rank-nine powerhouse like him.

He slipped into Gina’s home without making a sound.

Inside, Gina was seated in front of a glowing screen, watching a video uploaded by her friend Mindy Lane. Her face was twisted with anger and disbelief.

"How can she lie so shamelessly?" Gina snapped, fists clenched in frustration. "Rory was the one saved by the Blood Moon. I saw it with my own eyes! And she is claiming it was her?! Cunning, lying bitch!"

She knew exactly what Mindy was doing—using the incident to catapult herself straight to the Central District, chasing the privilege and status she had always wanted. That honor should have belonged to Rory. That future should have been hers. She couldn’t let anyone else steal it from her friend.

"No," Gina muttered fiercely. "I won’t let Mindy steal what belongs to Rory. If this keeps spreading, I’ll tell the truth myself."

Rory had lived alone for so long, struggling just to survive. She had only recently gained a few matches, and even then, none of them were truly reliable. A move to the Central District would change everything for her. The Empire would provide superior housing, elite training resources, and powerful protectors. Her life would finally become easier.

Determined, Gina reached to activate her light-brain’s recording function—only for the screen to freeze instantly.

Before she could react, one of her mates stiffened, eyes widening as he noticed a figure standing silently in the doorway.

"You..." he said warily. "You’re Female Master Rory’s match, aren’t you? How did you get in here?"

Jasper’s presence was overwhelming in person. The villa doors had never opened. No alarms had sounded.

"How I entered is irrelevant," Jasper replied calmly as he lifted his head. His dark violet gaze settled on Gina with chilling intensity. "I’m here to ask you for a favor, Ms. Jones."

One of her mates tried to speak, anger rising—but froze mid-sentence. In an instant, every male in the villa except Gina stood rigid, completely immobilized.

Gina’s heart sank as she realized what was happening. "What are you planning?" she demanded. "Does Rory know you’re here?"

She already knew the answer. Rory would never allow this.

"That doesn’t matter," Jasper said flatly.

He produced ten small vials and placed them neatly on the table. Each one shimmered faintly, infused with his Violet Obsidian venom.

"Each of you will drink one," he said. "Do that, and I won’t kill you."

There were nine males in the room—the same nine who had gone into the forest with Gina that night.

"What is this?" Gina asked hoarsely. "What are you trying to do?"

No one could mistake these for ordinary nutrient fluids—not when they were being forced upon them under threat of death.

Jasper hadn’t intended to explain, but Gina had spoken up for Rory earlier. For that alone, he granted her a sliver of honesty.

"The Blood Moon cannot be linked to Rory," he said. "All of you must forget it."

Understanding dawned instantly. The Violet Obsidian lineage was infamous for its ability to erase or rewrite specific memories. Still, confusion churned in Gina’s mind. Why prevent Rory from being associated with the Blood Moon? A future on Central Planet would benefit her immensely.

Yet the madness burning in Jasper’s bloodshot eyes silenced every question she wanted to ask.

"I’ll drink it," Gina said at last. "But you must swear to the Beast God that you won’t harm me, my mates, or Rory."

"Fine," Jasper replied without hesitation. "I swear I will never harm my own female, and I will not harm you or your mates—this time."

Gina accepted the vials. She fed nine of them to her mates, then drank the last one herself.

Moments later, bodies slumped to the floor.

Jasper stepped forward, his power surging as the venom took effect. Using it as a conduit, he rewrote their memories with precise cruelty. When his subordinates arrived, they carried the unconscious bodies back to their rooms.

When they awoke, they would remember only what Mindy Lane had claimed in her video.

Deep within the forest, Sylas Ruan continued his relentless search.

Ever since the shockwave from the explosion had hurled him away, he had been looking for Rory without rest. He had already accessed her records and discovered the truth—that she was the female who had saved him that night.

Worse still, she was also the one the Beastmate System had matched to him days earlier.

Regret tore through him like a blade.

Only now did Sylas truly understand how foolish he had been—how blind. He had turned away from the chance to become her mate, all because he failed to recognize what was standing right in front of him.
