Chapter 182: Babies

The next day, it was nearly noon when Rory stepped out of her room, refreshed and radiant, and went looking for Nix.

Nix was in the kitchen, busy preparing lunch for her. The moment he saw her appear in the doorway, his eyes lit up.

"Rory, you’re awake! I made something delicious. Go sit and wait for a bit—it’ll be ready soon."

The rich aroma filling the kitchen made Rory smile. "It smells amazing. Nix, your cooking keeps getting better and better. You’re incredible."

Among everyone in the house, Nix had the most natural talent for cooking.

At her praise, his grin widened uncontrollably. "As long as you like it, that’s all that matters."

He had always worried that if his dishes weren’t good enough, she might lose interest.

Rory stepped forward and quickly kissed his cheek. "After lunch, come out with me for a while. And when we get back tonight... we’ll complete the bonding."

B-bonding? Rory had come to him—on her own—to talk about it?

He had assumed that since Jasper had stayed with her last night, she wouldn’t get to him until tomorrow at the earliest.

The surprise was so sudden that Nix nearly jumped in place.

"Wait for me! The food’s almost done!"

He turned back to the stove, hands moving faster than ever.

Cook quickly. Eat quickly. Go out early. Come back early...

Hehehe.

***

After settling that with Nix, Rory sat down on the living room sofa and sent a message to Gina.

The Female Festival was approaching. She wondered if Gina had arrived in the Central District yet.

Rory: Gina, when are you getting to Central District?

After sending that, Rory remembered what Wen had mentioned last night—about Aris arranging for someone to beat Lian.

After the Firebird Clan’s birthday banquet, Lian had sent her several messages. She had replied politely, but she wondered...

Had he really been injured?

She quickly sent another message.

Rory: Clan Leader Lian, I heard you were hurt. Is that true?

***

At that very moment, Lian was in the middle of facial treatment for his injuries.

When he saw Rory’s message, his eyes narrowed dangerously.

Who had leaked news of his injuries to her?

Damn it. How could he possibly let her see him like this?

After a moment’s thought, he replied at once.

Lian: Female Master, I’m very happy you reached out. And thank you for your concern. I’m not injured. I’ve simply been away from Central District these past few days. Once I return, I’ll contact you.

Seeing his response, Rory relaxed.

Rory: Alright. We’ll talk when you’re back in Central District.

Almost immediately after, Gina’s reply came through.

Gina: Hey Rory, I’m already in Central District. I just haven’t contacted you because I’ve been in the hospital these past two days.

Hospital?

Rory’s heart jumped.

Rory: Gina, what happened? Are you hurt?

Gina had always been healthy. Other than an injury, Rory couldn’t imagine why she’d suddenly be hospitalized.

Rory: I’m in Central District too. Send me the hospital coordinates—I’ll come see you this afternoon.

Gina replied:

Gina: Don’t worry. I’m not hurt. I gave birth yesterday. I’ll need to stay in the hospital for a month.

Rory stared at the message in shock.

Had Gina given birth? So soon?

When they were in Veridan City, Gina hadn’t even been pregnant yet, had she?

How much time had passed?

***

Just then, Nix carried the finished dishes out of the kitchen.

Before Rory could finish her sentence, she said, "Nix, we won’t go shopping this afternoon. Let’s go to the hospital instead, I—"

Hospital?!

Nix’s face drained of color. He set the dishes down hurriedly and rushed to her side, gripping her hands.

"Rory, what’s wrong? Are you not feeling well? I’ll message Yuel right now and have him come back."

Yuel and Vincent had left early for work. Jasper had also gone out in the morning for reasons unknown.

Only Nix and Xarion were home.

"Don’t panic, I’m fine," Rory quickly reassured him. "It’s my friend—she just gave birth. She’s in a hospital here in Central District. I want to visit her."

Relief flooded Nix instantly.

"Oh. That’s good. We’ll go right after lunch."

He paused.

"I’ll get Xarion to come with us."

After all, Xarion was Rank eleven. Having him along meant absolute security.

***

Nix went to Xarion’s room, only to find it empty.

Had he gone out too?

Just as Nix was about to send a message, the door to the adjacent room opened.

Xarion stepped out, carrying a faint chill with him. "You were looking for me?"

Nix blinked. "Why are you in that room? Not your own?"

Xarion shot him a resentful look. "I can’t sleep in that one."

Nix narrowed his eyes at him.

You can’t sleep in your own room? What kind of problem is that?

Xarion didn’t elaborate. He refused to revisit the topic of that overly... enthusiastic room décor. Since Rory liked it, it couldn’t exactly be torn down and redone.

He changed the subject. "What did you need?"

"Rory’s visiting a friend in the hospital. Come with us."

"Alright."

***

After lunch, the three of them left the manor.

Before going, Rory bought numerous gifts for Gina and her newborns.

The hospital Gina was staying in was a facility built specifically for females giving birth.

It housed the best medical equipment in the galaxy. The environment was luxurious—almost like a high-end resort.

Most importantly, everything was completely free.

When Rory stepped inside, her first thought was that this didn’t feel like visiting a hospital at all. It felt like coming on vacation.

At the reception desk, she provided her name and Gina’s.

After receiving Gina’s personal approval, the staff granted access and escorted Rory to her "ward."

Calling it a ward was misleading.

It was a four-story villa.

Inside, Gina’s mates were present, along with numerous medical staff caring for both mother and newborns.

Nix and Xarion were not permitted into Gina’s private suite.

Rory entered alone.

She immediately spotted Gina propped up in bed. Her complexion was rosy, her expression lively—nothing like someone who had just given birth.

"Little Rory! Come quickly—look at my babies!"

Gina beamed. Rory hurried over.

Inside a small incubator beside the bed lay several tiny bundles.

Her eyes widened in astonishment. This was her first time seeing real beastfolk newborns.

They were so small that all five could fit in one of her hands.

Soft pink skin, covered in fine down, they wriggled gently in their enclosure. On their backs were two tiny raised bumps—undeveloped wings.

"They’re adorable!" Rory breathed. "From the look of them... they’re Cloudwing clan, aren’t they?"

No wonder the pregnancy had been so short.

She had read that the Cloudwing clan’s gestation period lasted only a little over ten days.
