Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Eternal Shadow Dominion

Late that night, after the Inspection Bureau’s cleanup teams had finished sanitizing the contaminated residence and the surrounding block, the investigation moved indoors. Lets just say you dont wanna know what was found inside.

[AN: Poor man will be traumatized with k*lling his family.]

Inspection Bureau Headquarters — Command Office

Captain Veil listened to Seris’s report with his elbows on the desk and his expression doing the work of a man absorbing information he found increasingly troubling. Seris sat across from him with a slice of cake she had acquired from somewhere, eating it with the focused appreciation of someone who had earned this.

"Contamination from King-Tier Abyssal creature flesh," Veil summarized. "That explains the simultaneous outbreak of violent incidents across a single day."

"There’s more of it out there." Seris took another bite. "What we found tonight was one fragment among many. The cleanup teams are going to be busy."

"If this spreads further we’re looking at a city-wide containment crisis." Veil pressed two fingers to his temple. "I’ll need to bring this to Commander Draven first thing tomorrow." He paused. "You said the contaminated warrior was already dealt with when you arrived. Who handled it?"

"He said his name was Nova Stern. Student at Thornhaven First Combat Academy."

Veil reached for his terminal. A few keystrokes pulled up the academy’s records, and he and Seris looked at the file together.

Seris read through it. Then read through it again.

"Blood and Qi measurement 23.4. E-rank origin talent. Common-tier Shadow Reaper profession." She set her fork down. "You’re telling me this student used a spatial talent to hold a contaminated LV7 warrior completely immobile in midair, then pressed his palm to its head and purified the abyssal corruption directly out of its body and soul, and his file says E-rank Shadow Reaper."

"There’s only one male student matching your physical description at that academy by that name," Veil said. "No room for confusion."

"So he lied." Seris’s lips curved. "His real talent was definitely spatial, and something related to purification. He reported E-rank Shadow Reaper to hide what he actually awakened." She leaned back in her chair. "Smart. Actually very smart."

She picked her fork back up. "I heard his school’s awakening ceremony got hit by Abyss Cultists. The headmaster handled it, but still." She shook her head. "He is smart to hide it. No unnecessary trouble. Even I know how many times I’ve been targeted just this week because of my overpowered my eyes are."

Veil looked at her. "How many times?"

"Four." She said it the way someone said the weather forecast. "Tuesday was particularly annoying."

Veil exhaled slowly. "Troubles of a genius. I genuinely cannot relate."

Seris smiled and finished her cake. "Get me everything the academy has on him. And don’t send anyone to approach him directly — if he’s smart enough to hide spatial and purification talents under an E-rank filing, he’s smart enough to notice Bureau surveillance and it’ll just make him harder to track."

Veil made the note. "And the girl with him? Seraphine Vex?"

"A-rank, rare-tier Shadow Mage. Good instincts. She went into combat stance the moment the contaminated warrior appeared — no screaming or freezing. She’ll be someone worth watching too, in time." Seris stood and stretched. "But right now she’s not the interesting one."

She moved toward the door, pausing with her hand on the frame. "Nova Stern. Remember that name, Brother Marcus. I have a feeling we’re going to be hearing it again."

Three days passed.

Stern Residence

Rain hit the windows in steady sheets, the kind of rain that made the city feel smaller and closer. Lightning flashed intermittently through the gaps in the curtains, throwing sharp white light across Nova’s room before the dark came back.

He stood in front of his mirror and looked at himself.

Taller. Significantly taller than even a week ago, the cultivation advancement expressing itself in his frame. His hair had grown further, falling past his shoulders now in waves, the silver-white tips more pronounced against the dark roots. His physique remained lean rather than bulky but every visible line of it had a density that hadn’t existed before — eight abdominal muscles visible beneath skin that carried the faint inner luminescence of his Chaotic Origin Flame, the light not dramatic enough to show in a lit room but present enough that he noticed it in the darker moments between lightning flashes.

His eyes were deep gold, the kind that carried pressure behind them without trying.

He had spent three days cultivating and eating. Primarily cultivating. The Eternal Chaotic Origin Scripture’s 1,000-fold speed running continuously, his cells completing more of their conversion toward Chaotic Origin Energy existence with each revolution, the Trinity cycling — body, Qi, soul — in the mutual amplification the complete technique was designed to produce. He had eaten because he enjoyed eating, not because he needed to. The technique’s energy absorption from the ambient environment made conventional nutritional requirements largely academic. He still worked through significant quantities of the high-tier beast meat he had bought at the market, not because his body demanded it but because Moonshadow Rhino tasted excellent and he had money and opinions about food now.

He had also been thinking about what he had observed at Starlight Park.

Seraphine’s shadow manipulation. He had watched her activate the talent, observed the interface between her soul’s etched talent and the shadow particles in the ambient environment, understood the structural principles she was working with. He had Shadow Law at 6% comprehension already — the law itself was not new to him. What was new was the application framework her talent provided. The specific method of drawing shadow particles into coherent constructs, giving them form and function, separating fragments of consciousness to animate them with genuine intelligence.

He had been turning it over for three days.

He sat cross-legged on his bed, closed his eyes, and went deeper.

He already understood shadow as a universal law — not absence of light but a force in its own right, with dimensional depth and spatial properties that most people who manipulated shadow never accessed because they were working at the surface level. He went past the surface. Into the duplication principle underneath the shadow summoning application — because creating a shadow construct that carried genuine intelligence wasn’t just shadow manipulation, it was the principle of information duplication, of taking the structural blueprint of something conscious and recreating it from different material while preserving the essential properties that made it that thing.

He worked through it methodically. The duplication principle was more complex than any single law he had comprehended before because it touched multiple laws simultaneously — information structure, consciousness, material transformation, the relationship between original and copy. He pulled from his sealed memories for this one more than usual, the compressed knowledge from past lives surfacing fragments of relevant comprehension that accelerated his progress.

He pushed both principles toward law comprehension.

Shadow Law deepened — from 6% to something he could feel operating at a genuinely different level, the dimensional properties of shadow more accessible, the spatial relationship between shadow and the umbral dimension he had touched briefly during the Starlight Park spar now clear and navigable. Duplication Law crystallized alongside it, the principle of information-faithful recreation settling into his comprehension with the specific satisfaction of something that had been almost-understood for days finally resolving.

He held both laws in his awareness and felt the talent forming.

Then the system recognized it.

[New Talent Discovered — Etching Process Initiated]

The etching began on his soul simultaneously for both laws — and the Emberwood Flame alongside them, the E-rank talent that had been flagged as Evolution Pending for days now crossing its threshold as the accumulated law comprehension and soul strengthening finally provided the foundation it needed. All three etching processes ran in parallel, the sensation compound and intense — the familiar pain-and-resonance combination of soul integration, multiplied across three simultaneous etchings, each one finding its position in his soul’s fabric and pressing the surrounding structure to accommodate it.

He groaned through it and stayed in lotus position.

With each etching the grey cleared. Three separate sections of the suppressed territory dissolved as the etchings completed, and the flood that came through was immediate and pressurized — fragmented memories from multiple lives arriving simultaneously, techniques and intents and fragments of law and compressed combat experience pushing through the cleared gaps all at once.

He sealed everything. Methodically, completely, the wall going back up across each cleared section before the memories could develop into something that demanded processing time. Filed. Later.

[AN: Why did I add the memory plot, I have been postponing it by saying "filed for later". Any ideas guys, your opinions are appreciated in the comment section.]

His soul felt different when the etchings completed. Deeper. More structured. The three new additions had given his soul’s fabric properties it hadn’t carried before — the Emberwood Law bringing a living-fire quality to the soul’s baseline character, the Shadow Law adding dimensional depth to its structure, the Duplication Law giving it an information-density that made the entire soul feel more precisely defined, like a drawing that had been retraced in finer lines.

And his soul space had expanded.

Not marginally — significantly, the space between the soul’s boundary and its center deepening in a way that translated directly into soul power. More soul power meant more spirit capacity, and the Trinity cultivation felt the change immediately. His soul was now genuinely contributing to the cycle rather than lagging behind it, the body and Qi refinement finding the enhanced soul as a stronger partner in the mutual amplification loop.

The Trinity accelerated.

He felt his cells change in the acceleration — the conversion toward Chaotic Origin Energy existence advancing faster than any previous session, the Chaotic Origin Flame in his core brightening and stabilizing at a higher intensity, his body and Qi both climbing with the increased soul power feeding the cycle. His race classification was shifting again — not through a dramatic evolution event but through the steady completion of a transition that had been ongoing since the first session of the technique.

When the acceleration stabilized he checked his panel.
