Nova walked Seraphine to the Skyrail station and waited until she boarded. She had opened her mouth to say something at least four times on the walk over and closed it each time, the questions clearly forming and then getting stuck somewhere between her mind and her mouth. She boarded the car, turned back to look at him through the closing doors with an expression that was still doing active processing work, and then the doors sealed and the car moved.
He watched it go and then walked home.

Seraphine came through the front door quietly.
Her father was on the living room sofa with a book, his military posture unchanged even in leisure. He looked up when she entered. "Welcome back. Did you meet with young Nova? How is he doing? Think he’ll qualify for a Combat University?"
Seraphine thought about the contaminated warrior hanging suspended in space. About the palm pressed to its head. She had already turned down the hallway. Her bedroom door closed behind her. She sat on the edge of her bed and then fell backward onto it, arms spread, staring at the ceiling.
