Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 90: Linden Nathan’s Attitude
Mona Nathan crossed her arms, her expression clearly saying, ’If you don’t do what I want, I’m telling on you.’
At the sight, Sharon Quincy nearly gritted her teeth to dust.
"Fine, I promise... When I get back to Aethelgard, I’ll help you take care of it." Sharon Quincy could only bite the bullet and agree.
Her words put Mona Nathan’s mind at ease. "You don’t have to wait until you’re back in Aethelgard. Do it in the next day or two. I want Miles Sinclair to see the consequences of crossing me."
"Cousin, it’ll only take a word from you. Uncle has always doted on you; he’ll agree to anything you say."
Every word from Mona was a jab, a reminder and a warning, though she never once mentioned Linden Nathan by name.
Sharon Quincy had intended to just give a vague promise, but seeing how insistent Mona was, she knew it would be difficult to fob her off this time.
"Since I’ve promised you, I won’t go back on my word. Don’t worry." Sharon Quincy wanted nothing more to do with Mona Nathan. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
But Mona Nathan had always been shameless. Now that she had ahold of Sharon Quincy, she wasn’t about to let go.
She grabbed Sharon Quincy’s hand with feigned affection, a wide smile on her face. "Cousin, that Cecilia Nathan bullied me, too. What are you going to do to teach her a lesson?"
As soon as she said it, a hush fell over the room.
Sharon Quincy took a small step back and pried Mona’s hand off. "Dear cousin, I don’t think we’re close enough for me to go after every single person who bullies you, are we?"
’Dealing with a celebrity is one thing, but Cecilia Nathan? Is she someone I can afford to cross?’
’The old Cecilia Nathan would have been an easy target, but the Grant Family is backing her now.’
’And this Mona Nathan thinks she can use me as her pawn? She must be a fool.’
"Aren’t you about to marry into the Hawthorne Family, cousin? Cecilia Nathan is a thorn in your side, isn’t she? Otherwise, why would Damian Hawthorne have brought her to the auction today instead of you?"
Mona’s words were all it took to set Sharon Quincy’s anger ablaze.
’That Damian Hawthorne... He promised he would marry into my family, and the next thing I know, he’s taking Cecilia Nathan to some auction.’
’This was a complete and utter slap in the face.’
Seeing the tension, Frances Bennett quickly spoke up for her son. "Selina, dear, don’t listen to her nonsense. Since Damian made you a promise, he would never..."
"I know, Auntie," Sharon Quincy interrupted with a smile. "Since Mr. Hawthorne promised he would marry into my family, I should trust him implicitly."
Marrying into their family?!
Damian Hawthorne... was marrying into their family?!
That one statement sent shockwaves through the room. Everyone turned to stare at Frances Bennett in astonishment.
"Frances, darling, is your son... really marrying into their family?" Hugo Grant’s mother covered her mouth with a smirk. "It can’t be, can it? Your Hawthorne Family is number one in Korsyth, after all. How could he possibly be the one to marry in?"
"Marrying into a bride’s family... How scandalous!"
"The Hawthornes marrying into another family... Just how powerful are the Nathans of Aethelgard to make the Hawthornes agree to such a thing?"
Listening to the murmurs around her, the color drained from Frances Bennett’s face, leaving it deathly pale.
She had been against him marrying into their family, too, but her son had insisted.
She shot Sharon Quincy a resentful glare, her face a shifting mask of anger and humiliation.
Having this said out loud would hit the Hawthorne Family with the force of an earthquake.
And just as expected, the next day, news that Damian Hawthorne was to marry into his bride’s family spread like wildfire.
It may not have made the official news, but the rumor was spreading so virally it might as well have.
「The Nathan Estate in Aethelgard」
Inside a luxurious courtyard home, Linden Nathan was reading the latest newspaper, a cup of freshly brewed tea at his side.
While most people were accustomed to getting their news from their phones, he still preferred the feel of physical print.
"President Nathan, you asked me to keep an eye on the Hawthorne Family. I have an update," Linden Nathan’s assistant said, standing respectfully outside the door.
"Damian Hawthorne?" Linden Nathan set down the newspaper and tapped his fingers on the desk. Though well past fifty, he looked remarkably young for his age.
He wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, and his sharp, chiseled features gave a clear glimpse of the handsome man he must have been in his youth.
"What has he done now?" Linden Nathan hadn’t paid much attention to news from Korsyth until a few years ago, when his daughter began obsessively pursuing Damian Hawthorne.
Hugo’s death had been a devastating blow to Cecilia. If she hadn’t been thinking of her father, she might have followed him.
Fortunately, she later became "infatuated" with Damian Hawthorne.
Although he disapproved of the way Cecilia chased after Damian Hawthorne, at least it served as a distraction for her.
Besides, Damian Hawthorne himself...
He had investigated him thoroughly and discovered that despite his youth, the man was remarkably capable and daring.
Anyone who could single-handedly build up a family dynasty was no simple man.
"I recall you saying a while ago that the rumors of his proposal to Serena Hughes were false, but that he was, in fact, pursuing her." Linden Nathan had been keeping a close watch on Damian Hawthorne’s every move.
Serena Hughes’s recent appearance on the scene had caused Cecilia to leave, heartbroken.
He respected Cecilia’s decision. Besides, he couldn’t stand how everyone was calling Cecilia a "simp."
Leaving wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
"Yes, but it seems Damian Hawthorne had the wrong person. And now, the latest rumor is that he’s going to marry into his bride’s family."
"Marrying into their family?" Linden Nathan frowned at the term. "Which family is he marrying into?"
"Ours... The Nathans of Aethelgard."
