Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 89: She Has Seen the Real Selina Nathan
"So what if he does? Are you saying I can’t like someone just because you don’t?" Mrs. Grant raised an eyebrow, a warm smile on her face. "I like whomever my son likes. If he wants to marry Cecilia Nathan, I’ll give them my blessing."
Frances Bennett was taken aback.
’That’s true. Other than her poor family background, Cecilia Nathan is perfect in every other way.’
During the time Cecilia was pursuing Damian, she had gone out of her way to please her. Knowing Frances had trouble sleeping, Cecilia would often make her soups to help her rest.
In all these years, not even the servants or chefs had ever been so thoughtful.
The thought of Cecilia Nathan joining the Grant Family left Frances Bennett with a faint pang of disappointment.
’If only Cecilia’s family background were a little better, she wouldn’t have even considered anyone else.’
’What a shame...’
"Cecilia... she’s a good girl." Frances Bennett mumbled, letting out a sigh. "Aside from her family background, she’s actually perfect daughter-in-law material. But... as you know, she’s in love with my son. I’m afraid it doesn’t matter if you approve; that girl Cecilia might not agree to it."
A hint of pride laced Frances Bennett’s words.
Mrs. Grant let out a cold laugh.
’I’ve never liked Frances Bennett, not since the day I met her.’
’That boy, Damian Hawthorne, seems perfectly normal. I don’t know how he ended up with such a deranged mother.’
"Whether she agrees or not is none of your concern. Just remember to give a generous gift when the time comes." Mrs. Grant then turned to the now-composed Sharon Quincy beside her. "So, you’re the famous Selina Nathan?"
"Hello. Yes, I’m Selina Nathan."
"Oh. You and your future mother-in-law certainly seem to be on the same wavelength."
Sharon Quincy forced an awkward smile.
She could feel the woman’s scorn.
She was used to being the center of attention, showered with praise. It was rare for anyone to look at her with such contempt.
"Frances, darling, your son spent millions on that Cecilia girl. I thought things between them were a done deal," another wealthy lady chimed in, bringing up the rumor.
Spending hundreds of millions on jewelry for a woman who wasn’t even his wife—now that was a juicy piece of gossip.
Just then, another voice cut in. "Damian Hawthorne wasn’t the one who spent those hundreds of millions."
Mona Nathan walked over, her face flush with indignation. "Damian Hawthorne only spent tens of millions. The one who really spent the big money was from the Grant Family."
The room erupted.
The person who spent hundreds of millions wasn’t from the Hawthorne Family, but the Grant Family!
Hearing this, Frances Bennett immediately burst out laughing. She turned to Mrs. Grant and said, "Well, well! I had no idea your son was so generous, throwing around hundreds of millions so casually. You used to worry he wasn’t interested in women, but now you can rest easy. Not only does he like women, he’s completely head over heels!"
Frances Bennett’s words were dripping with schadenfreude.
She had just been fuming, truly believing her own son had spent that fortune. She never expected such a quick reversal.
It wasn’t Damian who spent the money, it was Hugo Grant.
Seeing Mrs. Grant fall silent, Frances Bennett’s smile grew even more smug.
Mrs. Grant frowned.
Hundreds of millions was no small sum.
As the atmosphere grew heavy, Mona Nathan felt the bitterness in her heart lessen considerably.
It wasn’t often she got to come from Aethelgard to Korsyth, so she made a point of attending every party she could.
As soon as the auction ended, she’d heard her cousin was here and rushed right over.
Mona Nathan took a deep breath, a smirk playing on her lips as she turned her gaze to the woman standing beside Frances Bennett.
"You said just now you’re Selina Nathan?"
In fact, Mona Nathan had met her cousin Selina Nathan once when they were children.
It was at a dinner party. She had gone with her father to Linden Nathan’s home for a meal and had only caught a glimpse of her cousin, but she was stunned by her beauty.
Her cousin was just that beautiful.
As beautiful as someone you’d see on television.
At least, in her real life, she had rarely seen anyone as striking as her cousin.
But the Selina Nathan standing before her now was completely different from the person she remembered. It was as if they were... two entirely different people.
"Yes, I’m Selina Nathan. And you are...?" Meeting Mona Nathan’s suspicious gaze, Sharon Quincy’s heart began to pound.
Mona Nathan looked her up and down, her eyes twinkling mischievously. "My name is Mona Nathan, from the Nathans of Aethelgard."
’The Nathans of Aethelgard!’
A jolt went through Sharon Quincy.
’What is someone from the Nathans of Aethelgard doing here?’
’And that look in Mona Nathan’s eyes just now... Don’t tell me she’s met the real Selina Nathan?’
"Mona Nathan..." Frances Bennett glanced between Mona Nathan and Sharon Quincy, then said warmly, "You’re both from the Nathan Family, so you must know each other. Why are you both being so... formal?"
A flicker of panic crossed Sharon Quincy’s eyes.
’The Nathan Family only taught me banquet etiquette; they never taught me how to recognize other family members.’
’How could I have known someone from the Nathan Family would be at this party today?’
"My cousin Selina and I aren’t close. We’ve hardly ever met, so it’s normal that we don’t know each other well." Mona Nathan’s words let Sharon Quincy off the hook.
Although Mona Nathan felt the person before her was a far cry from the one in her memory, she figured that since her uncle was coming to Korsyth soon, no one would be bold enough to impersonate Selina Nathan.
She could only attribute the difference to one thing—Selina Nathan hadn’t aged well.
It wasn’t unheard of for a beautiful child to grow into a plain adult.
Hearing Mona Nathan call her "cousin," Sharon Quincy snapped back to reality and warmly took Mona’s hand. "I rarely went out in public before, so I didn’t get to know you, cousin. We’ll get to know each other better if we chat and meet more often from now on."
"That’s great! With you here in Korsyth, cousin, I won’t have to worry about being bullied anymore!" Mona Nathan was ecstatic. "Cousin Selina, you have no idea how much I had to put up with at the auction today. Now that you’re here, I’d like to see anyone try and bully me again."
Hearing this, the smile on Sharon Quincy’s face stiffened slightly. "Cousin... who bullied you?"
At that, Mona Nathan was instantly animated. "Who else but that Cecilia Nathan! Oh, and also, you know that idol group that got popular this year? There’s a guy in it named Miles Sinclair, and he actually humiliated me in front of everyone."
Mona Nathan was filled with righteous indignation. "Cousin, I know Uncle invested in a lot of entertainment companies. If you just say the word, that Miles Sinclair won’t be able to show his face in public ever again! Cousin, you’re so powerful, can’t you help me? Can you get him blacklisted?"
’Blacklisted?’
’Getting a celebrity blacklisted with just a single sentence?’
The people nearby all pricked up their ears, listening with rapt excitement.
The corner of Sharon Quincy’s mouth twitched. She was about to refuse when Mona Nathan grabbed her arm. "Cousin, you’re my *real* cousin! We’re related by blood! I remember Uncle once said that we, the Nathan Family, have to stick together. Someone bullied me, so you have to stand up for me!"
"This... Let me think about it," Sharon Quincy said, not wanting to agree.
But with so many people watching, she couldn’t just shut Mona Nathan down and cause her to lose face.
"I don’t care! Cousin, you have to figure something out and help me, or I’m calling Uncle!"
