Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 56: The Nathan-Hawthorne Marriage Alliance
Damian Hawthorne shot him a glance.
The words caught in Justin Bell’s throat, and he didn’t dare say more.
’A lot of potential?’
Cecilia Nathan’s lips curled.
’Does Damian Hawthorne want to help the Sutton Family, too?’
At the thought, Cecilia instinctively glanced at Damian Hawthorne, just as he looked over.
Their eyes met. Damian Hawthorne’s brown eyes were profound, like the depths of a dark pool.
Cecilia Nathan lowered her gaze, her heart skipping a beat.
Cecilia had thought Damian Hawthorne would take her to his place, but he ended up driving her back to her own apartment complex.
"Come cook for me at my place tomorrow. It’s too late tonight, never mind." Damian Hawthorne glanced at Cecilia in the rearview mirror, his tone languid.
Cecilia breathed a sigh of relief. As she got out of the car, she heard Justin Bell ask Damian Hawthorne where he was going next.
"I’m going to see Serena Hughes."
Damian Hawthorne’s low voice was just loud enough for Cecilia to catch.
Hearing this, Cecilia stopped in her tracks.
As Damian Hawthorne’s car disappeared into the distance, Cecilia remained standing there, a complex expression on her face.
’No matter what, Serena Hughes will always have a place in his heart.’
The Maybach drove toward the Sinclair residence.
By this time, Serena Hughes had already moved into the Sinclair home.
The spectacle at the bar still made the news, but she paid to have all the stories killed.
Fortunately, Fiona Sinclair never asked how she spent her money. Ever since she was given a credit card with no limit, she could solve any problem with money.
"Miss Hughes, Mr. Hawthorne is here."
The Sinclair family’s butler, dressed in a suit, stood respectfully at the door and smiled at Serena Hughes.
’Mr. Hawthorne... Damian Hawthorne?’
Serena Hughes jumped to her feet excitedly. "Damian Hawthorne is here?"
The butler nodded with a smile. "Yes, he’s waiting outside."
At this moment, the butler swelled with pride.
Who was Damian Hawthorne? A legend in all of Korsyth. When he went blind, the Hawthorne Family was nearly devoured by rivals. But after regaining his sight, he single-handedly revived the family’s fortunes in just one year. The following year, they became the number one business dynasty in all of Korsyth.
In other words, the name Damian Hawthorne alone carried immense weight throughout Korsyth.
Yet, for a man like him, aside from occasional rumors about admirers, he had never publicly acknowledged any woman. Even the widely gossiped-about Cecilia Nathan was merely someone he had an ambiguous relationship with, holding no official title.
But this Serena Hughes, whom the Sinclair Family had just taken in, was different.
She was the one who made headlines for being proposed to by Damian Hawthorne. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
If the Sinclair and Hawthorne families were joined by marriage, their entire family’s status would be elevated not just in Korsyth, but throughout all of Veridia.
At the thought, the butler puffed out his chest, a broad smile spreading across his face.
Serena Hughes was naturally ecstatic as well. Thinking that Damian Hawthorne had come to see her so openly, she couldn’t wait and rushed outside.
When she saw Damian’s Maybach, Serena Hughes hurried over. "Mr. Hawthorne."
She wore a long silk dress, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders, making her look exceptionally demure.
She knew Damian Hawthorne liked her pure and innocent look, and ever since coming to the Sinclair family, she had always dressed in this style.
Damian Hawthorne rolled down the window and asked languidly, "Were you behind what happened to the Sutton Family?"
Serena Hughes stiffened and mumbled awkwardly, "The Sutton Family? Mr. Hawthorne, I... I don’t know what you’re talking about."
"I’m not in the mood to play games with you." Damian Hawthorne shot her a sideways glance, his tone devoid of warmth. "I recall telling you not to go against Cecilia."
A pang of pain shot through Serena’s heart, and her eyes instantly reddened. "You did. I know you did. I remember."
"I used to think you said that to protect me, but now I realize you were protecting Cecilia Nathan." Serena Hughes clutched her chest, her voice a pained accusation. "Mr. Hawthorne, I haven’t done anything to the Suttons, and I never intended to go against Cecilia Nathan."
As she spoke, large tears began to roll down her cheeks. "I don’t know why you would accuse me of that. I’m not the kind of person you think I am."
"Is that so?" Damian Hawthorne raised an eyebrow, noncommittal. "Then when are you going to tell the reporters the truth about the proposal?"
Serena Hughes’s breath hitched. Sniffling, she stared at him. "Mr. Hawthorne, can I ask for a favor? My grandmother plans to announce my identity at your grandfather’s birthday banquet. If I tell the reporters the truth before then, the Sinclair family will surely cast me aside."
"Could I please ask that we wait to reveal the truth about the proposal until after your grandfather’s birthday banquet?"
"Fine," Damian Hawthorne said, a corner of his mouth twitching up. "In that case, you’d best stay away from Cecilia."
Serena Hughes let out a sigh of relief. Her lips curved into a brilliant smile. "You can rest assured. I’ll ask my grandfather to help the Sutton family. Besides, Cecilia Nathan is my teaching assistant. I wouldn’t do anything to her."
Once Serena Hughes finished speaking, Damian Hawthorne gave a slight nod. The window rolled up, severing the connection between them.
Watching the car drive away, Serena felt as if all the strength had been drained from her body.
She quickly looked back. Fortunately, the Sinclair family servants hadn’t seen this scene.
She didn’t want to lose face in front of the Sinclairs.
Back inside the Sinclair residence, Fiona Sinclair was seated. When she saw Serena enter, she gave her a knowing smile. "So, that Hawthorne boy came looking for you?"
Serena Hughes’s heart clenched. She quickly lowered her head and murmured a soft, "Mm-hmm."
Fiona Sinclair held Damian Hawthorne in extremely high regard. If she found out what their relationship was really like, she would surely be disappointed in Serena, who might even be cast aside.
At that thought, Serena Hughes gritted her teeth and decided to pay Cecilia Nathan a visit.
Early the next morning, Cecilia Nathan received a call from Serena Hughes.
"Cecilia, is this a good time to talk?"
Hearing Serena Hughes’s voice, Cecilia was instantly on alert.
She’d already received the results of the investigation she’d ordered.
What happened to Chloe Sutton was entirely the work of the Sinclair family.
And it went without saying that this was all thanks to Serena Hughes.
"Serena Hughes, what game are you playing now?" Cecilia dropped the pretense, her tone as cold as ice. "You drove my friend’s company to the brink of bankruptcy. I haven’t even had the chance to settle that score with you, and here you are, serving yourself up on a platter."
"Cecilia, what do you mean by that? Since when do I have that kind of power?" Serena Hughes said, completely dodging the accusation. "Actually, I called today specifically to tell you something."
"Do you know about the mysterious heiress of the Nathan family?" Serena Hughes’s voice took on a secretive tone. "I hear she’s hideous. So ugly she has to be hidden away."
Cecilia raised an eyebrow, noncommittal. "Oh, is that so?"
"But Frances wants to arrange a marriage between Mr. Hawthorne and the Nathan heiress," Serena Hughes sighed. "Cecilia, are you really willing to give Mr. Hawthorne up to a person like that?"
"A marriage alliance?" Cecilia’s eyelid twitched.
’The Nathan family is arranging a marriage with the Hawthorne family? How come I don’t know anything about it?’
"That’s right. So, Cecilia, you absolutely have to go to the banquet."
