Chapter 96: Chapter 96

Starting last week, Remillia’s room became a nightly gathering spot for her friends. They would usually drop by after classes, staying up late before curfew. The next day, they would come visit her again to either play games, chat or study with her.

This day was different though, Cypher was the only one who showed up. The others sent a chat one by one deciding to give their brains a rest or else it would overheat from using it too much which caused Remillia to laugh at them. In the end, Remillia was left alone with Cypher. He was sitting on the floor beside her bed, struggling with a particularly tricky formula while she lounged on her bed, watching a movie with Macaron.

Remillia was engrossed in her movie, occasionally glancing at Cypher as he worked through the problems. She thought nothing of his presence, assuming he was there just to study like usual. What she didn’t realize was that Cypher was there because he enjoyed the quiet, intimate time they were spending together. He liked the others, of course, but there was something special about being with her.

He secretly stole a glance at her, watching as she laughed softly at something on the screen. Her guard was down, her usually sharp and confident demeanor replaced with a relaxed, almost carefree attitude. It was a side of her he didn’t get to see often, and he cherished these moments.

Remillia caught him looking and raised an eyebrow. "Need help with that formula?" she asked, pausing the movie.

Cypher quickly turned his attention back to his notes, a slight blush creeping up his cheeks. "Uh, yeah... I’m stuck on this one."

She slid off the bed, kneeling beside him to look at the problem. As she explained the steps, her voice soft and patient, he was only staring at her, completely mesmerized by the scene before him. He knew he had fallen for her long ago, but these quiet nights only deepened his feelings.

"There, that should make it easier," she said while smiling.

She then turned to look at Cypher, only to realize how close they were—far closer than she’d anticipated. Their faces were just inches apart, and she could feel his breath on her skin. For a moment, neither of them moved, both too stunned to react.

Cypher’s gaze was locked onto hers, his mind completely blank except for the thought of how beautiful she looked up close. He hadn’t heard a single word of her explanation, too mesmerized by the way her lips moved and the way her eyes sparkled in the dim light of the room.

Remillia felt her face heat up, a deep blush spreading across her cheeks. Her usual composure shattered in an instant, and she quickly looked away, her heart pounding in her chest. "U-Um... Did you get that?" she stammered, trying to regain her usual confident tone but failing miserably.

Cypher blinked, snapping out of his trance, but his face was still flushed. "Y-Yeah... I mean, no... I, uh..." He fumbled with his words, struggling to find an excuse for why he hadn’t been paying attention. But the truth was written all over his face, and there was no hiding it.

The awkward silence that followed felt like an eternity. Remillia’s mind raced, trying to think of something—anything—to say to break the tension. But all she could focus on was how close they had been, and how his eyes had looked at her with an intensity that left her breathless.

Finally, she cleared her throat, stepping back to put some distance between them. "I’ll, uh, go get some water," she muttered, quickly getting up and heading for the kitchen, her face still burning.

Cypher watched her go, mentally kicking himself for not saying anything. He buried his face in his hands, feeling a mix of embarrassment and frustration. The moment had slipped through his fingers, and he wasn’t sure when—or if—he’d get another chance like that again.

As Remillia reached the kitchen, she took a deep breath and splashed some water on her face, trying to cool down both the physical and emotional heat that had flared up. She stared at her reflection in the glass cabinet, her mind racing with conflicting thoughts.

"Snap out of it, Remillia!" she whispered harshly to herself, slapping her cheeks lightly. "He’s the MC! He’s a friend! And one more thing... he’s going to end up with Angela." Her voice trailed off as she said the last sentence, a pang of something unidentifiable tugging at her heart.

She shook her head, trying to push away the unwelcome thoughts, and took a deep breath. "Just focus, Remillia," she told herself, determined to get back to her usual composed self. But as she steeled herself to face Cypher again, she noticed the room was quiet—too quiet.

When she walked back into the room, Cypher was gone. The only thing left was a small note stuck to her bed. She picked it up, her heart sinking as she read his words: "The curfew’s almost up, and I’m sorry for what happened just now."

Remillia sighed, a mix of disappointment and relief washing over her. "He left..." she murmured to herself, feeling a strange emptiness where there had just been so much tension. She stared at the note for a moment longer before setting it aside, unsure of how to feel.

With a heavy sigh, she climbed into bed, slowly pushing Macaron to the side and pulling the covers over herself. As she lay there in the dim light, her mind replayed the moment over and over again. The closeness, the awkwardness, and the strange flutter in her chest—all of it left her feeling confused and more vulnerable than she wanted to admit.

"He’s already destined to be with someone else," she whispered to herself one last time, hoping that saying it out loud would make it easier to believe. But as she drifted off to sleep, her thoughts were still tangled, and the warmth of his gaze lingered in her mind.

Remillia felt a mix of emotions as she walked to school the next morning. She had grown accustomed to seeing Cypher waiting for her outside her door, but today, he wasn’t there. A small part of her felt relieved, given the awkwardness from the night before, but another part of her felt a twinge of disappointment.

Trying to brush off the feeling, she went to class as usual. But when she arrived, the sight of the empty seat next to hers made her pause. She couldn’t help but feel a bit concerned. Cypher was usually one of the first to arrive.

She turned to Rex, who was engrossed in a game on his phone. "Hey, Rex, has Cypher come in yet?"

Rex barely glanced up from his screen. "Nope, haven’t seen him enter the classroom."

Remillia frowned slightly. ’Why’s he acting like that was a big deal?’ she wondered to herself.

When class was about to start, the professor came in. "Sit down, class. You’ll be having another classmate," the professor glanced outside. "Care to introduce yourself?"

I looked to the new student and almost choke when I saw who it was. Her heart raced as she watched Kairos, disguised as someone else, make his way into the classroom. She could barely believe what she was seeing.

’Why’s he here?!’ she thought, her mind racing with questions. Kairos had gone through all the trouble of disguising himself, so he clearly had some purpose in being at the academy. But what could it be?

Kairos scanned the room, his gaze briefly meeting hers. For a split second, Remillia thought she saw a glint of recognition in his eyes, but it quickly vanished as he continued to introduce himself.

"My name’s Caleo Valere," he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose delicately. Swoons and excited whispers filled the room as he introduced himself, his deep voice sending shivers down especially to the girls.

I was momentarily stunned when I heard his voice, ’That voice of his is dangerous!’ I quickly snapped back to reality as I looked at him again.

"Caleo Valere is a late enrollee, the academy accepted him since he has good grades and the final exams hasn’t started yet so be good to him," the professor looked back at Caleo, "you may sit whichever you like."

Remillia quickly looked down, pretending to be absorbed in her notebook. She hoped to avoid his attention, but her heart sank when she heard the chair beside her being pulled out. Slowly, she looked up, and there he was—Caleo, with that dangerous smile that made her heart skip a beat.

The girls in the class were clearly unhappy with his choice, and she could feel their jealous glares burning into her. But Remillia was too caught off guard to care. ’Don’t smile at me!’ she mentally scolded him, feeling her cheeks heat up despite her best efforts to stay composed.
