Chapter 114: Chapter 114

As the elevator slowly ascended, "The first floor is mainly where the lobby is. The second and third floors are the training and sports areas, respectively," Whitney explained.

The elevator dinged as we arrived at the third floor, and I stepped out behind her. "As you can see, from here up to the fifth floor are occupied by regular workers. The sixth up to ninth floors are occupied by heroes," she continued, gesturing around the efficient layout of the floor. "The higher floors are occupied by our executives; I also have my office there. So come find me when you need something."

She pressed the seventh-floor button. "Now let’s meet the person in charge of the program."

Seven? I thought it was the tenth floor? Did I misheard the receptionist?

After a brief moment, the elevator doors opened to the seventh floor. Immediately, I was struck by the circular design of the lobby, the walls lined with numerous office doors spaced apart strategically. It felt grand to just be called an office.

"Follow me," Whitney instructed, leading the way through the spacious lobby.

We approached an office clearly labeled A-23. Whitney opened the door with a gentle push and motioned for me to step inside.

"To be honest, you won’t be doing anything special today," she explained, taking the lead. "You’ll just roam and familiarize yourself around the building. Starting tomorrow, you’ll get to interact with other guilds. You might even have the chance to follow a Hero to see him or her hunt monsters. Who knows? Maybe they’ll teach you a thing or two."

I took in the office’s interior. It was spacious and has a minimalist design. The décor was clean and simple, and documents were arranged neatly across the desk.

"Have you heard of Ivan Rostislav?" Whitney asked, her focus returning to me.

"No," I replied, feigning ignorance.

"Mr. Ivan is one of our A-list heroes," she continued, clearly excited to be speaking about him. "He’s a foreigner who applied here and has quickly become one of our best heroes to deploy on missions."

My stomach twisted at the mention of his name. I knew too well what Ivan’s true intentions were. He had infiltrated the guild with a singular goal: to destroy it from the inside out. I recalled how I wrote this Chapter, he first earned Whitney’s trust in order to get closer to her and the guild before becoming as Whitney’s right hand.

I wanted to help her but this time, I won’t intervene. She needed this experience; she needed to grow stronger, not just as a hero but as an individual.

Watching her enthusiasm was bittersweet. She was so genuinely excited to meet a hero she admired, completely unaware of the danger he posed.

"Do you want to hear more about him?" Whitney asked, her voice light with eagerness.

"Sure," I said, trying to mask my concern.

"Well," Whitney began, "he’s incredibly skilled. His combat techniques are renowned, and he often takes on missions that most heroes shy away from. I’ve heard stories about his bravery and intelligence in the field!"

I nodded along, biting my tongue to prevent myself from disclosing any dark truths.

"Oh Miss Whitney, you’re already here."

As we were chatting in the office, the door swung open to reveal a tall man with a striking presence. His dark hair framed sharp features, and his warm smile immediately conveyed a sense of approachability. This had to be Ivan.

"It’s nice to meet you." He extended his hand toward me, locking eyes with a gaze that was at once charming and unsettling. "Remillia Lockhart, right?"

I would have been fooled by his charm but since I’m aware of his dark motivations, I can’t help but offer him a smile although it must’ve been awkward to look at. Still, Still, I played along, shaking his hand firmly, suppressing the urge to slap his hand away from me.

"Yes," I replied evenly.

Ivan released my hand and slid into his chair, the way he tapped his fingers against the stack of documents on his desk exuding confidence. "The guild orientation program is mostly done indoors," he continued, his voice smooth like velvet, "but don’t worry, we can go out for some small missions. However, before that, we need to analyze your capabilities to determine if you’re fit enough to join us in dungeon conquests and monster subjugation for higher-ranked monsters."

He leaned back, flashing an enthusiastic grin that didn’t reach his eyes. "Let’s get out of here for now. It does get a bit boring being in here all the time."

As he turned to lead us out, I caught a glimpse of a safe installed within the drawer of his desk. My heart raced as I remembered what was inside—all the condemning evidence Ivan gathered about Whitney’s family.

""Miss Remillia?" Ivan called out, pulling me from my thoughts.

"Ah, yes!" I stammered, quickly going out of the room.

As we continued our walk down the hallway, Ivan kept detailing the guild’s operations, revealing bits of information that I already know.

"Oh right, every guild also have deployment missions," he explained casually, as if discussing the weather. "You know how the Nytho Province is overrun by monsters now? About 2,500 heroes in each guild take turns every month, and they go there for at least five days to reduce the number of monsters. That way, we prevent an outbreak due to overpopulation. You’ll experience this once you become a hero—you can expect to head there about once or thrice a year, depending on how well you perform."

’Ohh this is new info to me...’ I pondered.

Ivan slowed his pace as we approached the end of a third-floor hallway. A large door marked "Examination Lab" loomed ahead, and he stopped, glancing back at us with a knowing smile.

"This is the place I wanted to show you first," he stated, seemingly proud. "I heard Miss Remillia was first in Domain Anomaly Analysis." freēwēbnovel.com

He pushed the door open, and as we stepped inside, I was taken aback. The examination lab was surprisingly ordinary in appearance. The spacious room was filled with tables, chairs, and an array of advanced computers, all positioned in a circular layout. In the center of the lab, the floor was empty, creating an open space but a strong looking glass was separating us from it.

The lab was buzzing with activity. Heroes were scattered throughout the room, some hunched over screens, others in deep discussions about their findings.

"Oh, Ivan, are the kids already here?" A voice called out, slicing through the ambient noise.

A man looked up from a stack of documents, her sharp eyes locking onto us with curiosity.

"Yup," Ivan replied, waving a hand toward us. "Miss Whitney, Miss Remillia, meet Kian Hall. He’s an advanced grade 3 hero."

Kian flashed a sideways glance my way, a hint of mischief dancing in his eyes. "Hi. You said two of the three were girls... so you must be Remillia Lockhart."

"Ah, yes."

"The world sure has changed," he continued, his tone edged with sarcasm. "Who would have thought rank 925 could come to our guild as part of the Guild Orientation Program? I wonder who was behind it."

Kian’s words dripped with a subtle disdain that made it clear his displeasure wasn’t aimed at me directly but at Whitney for some reason. I could feel the tension grow as Whitney also glared at him.

"But Remillia ranked one in the analysis exam," Ivan interjected.

"Haha, her? That’s amazing... But so was I! Everyone can do it if they just push their limits and study hard, so don’t get too overconfident," Kian chortled, his laughter echoing lightly through the lab. The way he removed her glasses and snickered.

He then tapped on the document he had just been studying. "Now then, Remillia, who’s ranked one in analysis, would you like to take a look at this?"

"Hey, you can’t just show the guild’s internal data so easily to outsiders," Ivan warned, stepping in to diffuse the tension that was building.

"Relax, it’s not that important," Kian shrugged dismissively, rising from his seat and handing me the document with a casual flick of his wrist. "Here, you can have it. It’s a copy, so you can do whatever you want with it."

I took the paper, my fingers brushing against the edges as I quickly glanced at the contents. It was filled with equations and mathematical expressions that made my head spin for a moment. The technical details blurred together in a wave of numbers and sigils.

"Just take a look although there’s no need to answer it," Kian said, his smirk widening. "I doubt a kid like you can even recognize it."

I got a bit annoyed at the term "kid." A fire ignited in my chest. ’What kid? I’m mentally older than you in my real world!’ And yet, here I was being belittled for my age in a place where I was determined to prove my worth.
