Chapter 111: Chapter 111

"Hey Remi," Angela called from behind me. "Cypher’s awake, maybe you want to check on him?"

I glanced back, trying to hide the flash of nerves that Angela’s words sent through me. "Oh, he’s awake already? Did he... Did he remember anything?" I replied, keeping my tone casual. But even as I spoke, my heart picked up pace.

Angela shook her head, "I think so? He asked me what happened to him so I explained to the part where he got lost with us and ended up being tied to that monster. He also wants to say thanks for saving him again."

I sighed in relief, it’s great that he doesn’t remember what happened a while ago or I don’t know how I will react when I face him.

I stood up and let Macaron fly freely, "Okay then after this we should get going," I began walking to where Cypher is but I slowed down when I saw his face coming into view as he looked up, his eyes brightening when he saw me.

The memory of his arms around me resurfaced, making my cheeks warm. I mentally shook myself, trying to keep my expression neutral.

"Glad to see you’re finally awake," I said, aiming for a light tone. "I was starting to think Angela and I would have to carry you out of here."

Cypher chuckled, scratching the back of his head. "I guess I owe you both big time," he said, meeting my gaze with a soft smile.

I gave a small nod, trying to ignore the quick flutter of my heart. "You’d also do the same for me and besides what are friends for, right?"

Cypher’s smile softened, but I thought I saw a flicker of something else in his eyes—something that seemed to fade as quickly as it appeared. "Yeah, friends," he echoed, his voice a bit quieter than usual.

I felt a strange pang in my chest, but I brushed it aside, keeping my tone casual. "Anyway, can you walk? It’s already afternoon and we need to get at the seaside by 6."

"I can-" Cypher’s voice was cut off when I heard the bushes rustling on our side. I quickly went infront of Cypher to shield him while I signaled Angela to ready her bow.

The noises were coming closer and closer, I was about to throw my dagger when we were baffled to see who it was.

"Do you guys have any idea what went through just to look for Cypher?!" Whitney shouted at us, her usual composed demeanor completely gone.

Her sudden outburst caught all of us off guard, especially with how disheveled she looked. She stomped towards us, her expression a mix of frustration and exhaustion. Edge, on the other hand, seemed more irritated, brushing off bits of leaves from his clothes with an annoyed look on his face.

"Seriously," Whitney continued, glaring at us specifically at Angela, "we were practically on a wild goose chase through torn bushes, muddy paths, and who knows what else—all because Cypher wandered off."

I tried not to laugh, but a grin slipped out in the end. "Well you’re here now, so mission accomplished, right?"

Edge folded his arms, narrowing his eyes at me. "You better make this worth it, Remillia. You know the reason why I joined you in finding him that we even bothered with this."

I fought the urge to roll my eyes at him. I wanted to shout at him that Angela already loves someone else. I rubbed my temples. "I get it. You’re upset. But we also fought a Lascovite Vine monster to save Cypher."

Whitney threw her hands up in exasperation. "Well, maybe if we were the ones who got caught by vines and nearly got eaten, we would understand your situation better!"

With all the commotion going on, Cypher decided to speak up as he scratched the back of his head sheepishly, clearly feeling guilty. "Sorry, guys... guess I got in over my head."

Angela snickered, playfully nudging Cypher. "See, Remi? He’s a walking disaster if I left him alone by himself."

Cypher ruffled her hair while laughing, "I’m not a kid anymore."

Meanwhile the expression of the three person looking at them seemed to change with what Angela said just now. Edge seemed even more gloomier as he controlled himself not to kick Cypher, Remillia released out a laugh at Angela’s joke but it sounded awkward as a she felt a painful tug on her heart while Whitney shot Angela an exasperated look. "And now you’re laughing and making jokes? Typical."

Edge shook his head, clearly annoyed at the whole situation. "Enough with the dramatics, Whitney," he muttered under his breath, and then turned to face me. "So, are we heading to the seaside or what?"

I gave him a nod, "We’re heading right now but you lead the way. I’m tired with all the fighting just now."

He raised an eyebrow at me while staring at me coldly, "Are you ordering me right now? You think I’m also not exhausted finding our way to meet the three of you here?"

I smirked, folding my arms. "Well, don’t you want to impress someone? This is the day you’re waiting for. Imagine, you’re the one leading the group while Cypher is being a burden to us? Naturally, some women are attracted to men who has great leadership. Why don’t you try it just this once?" I gave him my biggest puppy eyes. Of course I didn’t mean a single word I said, I just said that since I know don’t want to lead right now.

Edge narrowed his eyes at me, catching onto my little game, but I could tell he wasn’t entirely immune to the idea. He shot a quick glance at Angela, who was busy chatting with Cypher, seemingly unaware of our exchange. The slight hesitation in his stance told me I had him hooked just enough.

"Fine," he muttered, trying to sound nonchalant. "If you need someone to handle things, I’ll do it. Just don’t slow me down."

I sighed, clearly relieved that he bit my bait. I turned to look at the three. "Have you rested enough? Let’s get going now, Edge will take the lead from now."

Angela looked up, a hint of surprise flashing across her face. "Wow, Edge, taking the lead for us? Are you really the Edge I know?" she teased lightly.

I was drinking water when I almost spat it out as my eyes landed on Edge’s face. ’I didn’t know Edge has this side of him.’

It was priceless—his lips pressed in a tight line, eyes fixed forward with forced intensity, but the faint pink on his cheeks was impossible to miss. He cleared his throat, probably hoping no one would notice his reaction, but it only made it more obvious. I bit down on my lip to keep from laughing.

After a bit of rest, we continued our way to find the seaside. I thought I achieved my goal in pushing Angela and Cypher together but it backfired since Whitney, who was back in being friendly again, wanted to chat with Angela.

I wanted to be far from Cypher for now since I keep having these weird palpitations in my chest so I decided to approach Edge but stopped when I heard Cypher groan. I turned to look at him and it seems that he’s not fully okay, his left leg seems to be injured as he’s limping.

I look infront of me and notice that they’re a bit far from us now, it’s too late to ask for help. I glanced at him again and bit my lip, contemplating whether to help him or not. In the end, I stayed by his side as I supported him from walking. My plan backfired as being cupid and I’m by his side again.

The walk was peaceful but we would occasionally see dead monsters on the way, it seems that the three still wanted to gather points.

I looked at his leg again and can’t help but be curious. "Why didn’t you tell us you have an injury? We could have let you rest more."

"Well... I don’t want to worry you guys and as you can see, I can still walk right?" he sheepishly laughed while avoiding my gaze.

I can’t help but knock his head lightly. "What you’re doing right now is making me worry," I rolled my eyes at him.

Cypher winced and rubbed the spot where I knocked him, though he was smiling. "Alright, fair point," he admitted, his voice softening. "I didn’t want to slow anyone down considering that we have a few hours left before the rescue comes."

I raised an eyebrow, crossing my arms. "Cypher, trying to push through an injury without telling anyone is exactly what gets people in worse situations."

He shrugged, looking away as if embarrassed. "I just didn’t want to be a burden I guess."

My gaze softened as I looked at him. "Cypher, even though this is an individual test, you still have m—us," I held his gaze, trying to convey just how much I meant it.
