Chapter 112: Black Sesame Puff

The plastic bags crinkled in Aunty Liu’s grip as she stepped off the bus, muttering under her breath about overpriced garlic. The sun beat down lazily, and the neighborhood was as quiet as usual until she saw him.

Standing just across the street near the entrance to their apartment complex, in a pressed shirt and sunglasses far too fancy for a man of his decayed morals, was Su Jinhe.

Her eyes narrowed immediately. "What is that rotten man doing here?"

The man didn’t belong here. Not near her home. Not near Yuexin.

He noticed her and raised a hand as if they were old friends meeting at a market. She didn’t wave back. Instead, her jaw clenched as she picked up her pace.

"What the hell are you doing here?" she snapped the moment she crossed the street, standing protectively between him and the apartment building.

"Don’t you dare tell me you’re here to visit Meilin."

Aunty Liu didn’t know much about that man, but she knew two things for sure, he was a bad person and a greedy bastard.

Since Su Meilin lives practically alone in that vast apartment, she usually comes by just to say hi and to check on her condition.

But it always ended up in a deep talk about how miserable her married life was and how horrible her father was.

And as a woman, Aunty Liu understands her deeply.

Jinhe chuckled, but there was something strange in his demeanor. His face was still bruised and swollen, especially around the nose, giving him a pitiful, almost desperate look.

"No, no, not Meilin today," he said calmly. "I just... I came to pay my respects. To Haolong."

Aunty Liu blinked, her scowl deepening. "You’ve never mourned anyone a day in your life."

He nodded, still smiling. "Maybe. But grief hits strangely sometimes. I was just thinking about the boy... and Yuexin too. Poor thing. Alone now."

The moment ’Yuexin’ name came out of him, she flinched. Something about Jinhe was that he was also a judgmental person.

He couldn’t understand Yuexin’s condition and the first time they met, he criticized her and looked at her lowly.

Yuexin hated that man, and so did her nanny.

"You stay the hell away from her," Aunty Liu said, voice sharp. "She doesn’t want to see you. She gets anxious just hearing your name. I won’t let you upset her."

"I understand. I made out first met... Awakward," he said, then fished into a paper bag he’d been holding behind his back.

"I won’t stay. Just brought something from my hometown. Black sesame puffs. Haolong once said she likes sweets. So you please give it to her and tell her I’m truly sorry for her brother’s death."

He held it out with both hands. Aunty Liu didn’t take it at first. She just stared at him.

No usual arrogance. No fake charm. Just... odd gentleness.

She slowly accepted the bag, inspecting it with narrowed eyes. "You better not be planning anything."

"Of course not," he said with a small bow. "Just a father missing his family."

And just like that, he turned and walked away, hands behind his back like some tired pilgrim.

Aunty Liu stared after him, uneasy.

"...Why the hell didn’t you make a scene?" she muttered.

Something didn’t feel right. But she was glad he didn’t act stupid this time. She was too old to face his antics.

The apartment door clicked open and Aunty Liu stepped inside, kicking off her sandals with a grunt.

"I’m home!" Aunty Liu huffed, fanning herself with one hand. "The sun today nearly roasted me alive. I’m half jerky now."

Inside, Jin Yuexin peeked her head around the corner of the hallway, wide-eyed like a startled kitten. Her soft pink hair was messy, her oversized T-shirt almost slipping off one shoulder.

"Nanny..." she murmured, padding over barefoot. "You took too long."

Aunty Liu chuckled. "I wasn’t out dancing, you little sprout. I was buying lunch since you said you wanted to eat the katsu from the new Japanese restaurant."

Yuexin didn’t answer, she wrapped her arms around Aunty Liu’s waist and buried her cheek against her shoulder like a sleepy child. "I missed you."

Aunty Liu froze for a second, then smiled warmly and patted her back.

"You clingy little thing," she teased. "What would you do if I were gone a whole day?"

"...Sleep until you come back," Yuexin mumbled honestly.

Aunty Liu sighed dramatically. "Hopeless. You are already twenty-one years old now, you should know how to take care of yourself."

But the pink girl didn’t hear her words at all. She started setting down the shopping bags when Yuexin’s nose twitched. She leaned in closer, sniffing twice like a curious bunny. Her eyes lit up.

"...That’s sesame puff," she whispered.

Aunty Liu’s back stiffened slightly. It was from that bastard anyway. Why wouldn’t she throw it away while she could?

Yuexin pulled back and tilted her head. "That smell... It’s the one from Hongkou bakery. Did you... Did you really get it?"

Aunty Liu forced a small smile. "It’s from someone you hated.... You sure you still want to eat it?"

"Give me all," Yuexin said, eyes sparkling. "The most important thing is the sweet!"

"Nope. Not until you bathe."

Yuexin blinked. "Huh?"

"You heard me." Aunty Liu pointed to the bathroom. "You’re sticky with sweat and charcoal. Take a proper bath and I’ll give you the puff."

"...But I’m clean," Yuexin pouted.

"You smell like dusty curtains, girl. Go."

Yuexin hesitated, then stomped her foot like a sulking toddler. "Fiiine!"

She shuffled away, dragging her feet to the bathroom. Just before the door closed, she peeked her head out again.

"Leave the puff out where I can see it. Or I’ll be too sad to wash."

Aunty Liu burst out laughing. "You little manipulator!"

But once Yuexin disappeared behind the bathroom door, Aunty Liu’s smile faded.

She opened the snack box again, staring at the neatly arranged black sesame puffs.

Su Jinhe’s gift.

"He won’t poison it, does he?" she murmured and prepared the snack on the kitchen counter.

She checked on the sweets one by one, picked up one of the puffs with a napkin, cut it in half, and inspected the paste inside. Nothing strange. No strange color, no smell of chemicals.

"Hm... Maybe I am thinking too much? After all, why would he want to poison Xin’er?" She sighed and put the snack on the plate to give it to Yuexin.
