Chapter 87: Chapter 87: Sinister Plan (2)

|3rd POV|

The Lord of Barukan City smiles at the soldiers getting inside his city. He first thought the king would leave him and his family to defend against the incoming army with only his own, but his fear was proven false.

Not only did the king ask the other nobles to send their soldiers to his territory, but he also sent a supply to let them defend against the army as long as possible.

Even the king knows they cannot win against the North without their full army. However, the king knew that he needed to hold them as long as possible, and that is why he sent those soldiers and supplies.

Defend the North so the South settle their fight, then help them. With the new reinforcement and supply from the capital city, the Lord of the Barukan City felt like they could hold against the incoming enemy from the North for years. He thinks the king is kind and thoughtful, saving his family and himself.

That is what he thinks, but sadly for him, the king did not care for him and his family or even the people in his city.

A man wearing simple clothing walks through the city with a smile on his face. However, if people look closer, his smile is a little bit off, and his eyes are vacant, as if there is no life inside of it.

The man walks through the street of Barukan and arrives in one of the alleys, where he stops in the middle of it and starts muttering something. If a magician hears what he is muttering, they raise their eyebrows and try to stop him because what he is muttering is a chant for a spell.

After muttering for a minute, the man takes a knife from his belt and continues chanting. After another minute of chanting, he raised the knife and put it in front of his chest or, more specifically, his heart. A few seconds later, he stopped and pushed the knife into his heart. Blood started pouring out of his mouth and chest as it smeared the ground.

After stabbing himself, the man continued his chant, and slowly his body started to glow, and after another minute, a pillar of light appeared from his body.

People can see the pillar pierce the cloud, and even the Lord of Barukan City can see it from his castle. He did not know what the pillar did, but he had a bad feeling about it. As he is about to give the order to investigate the pillar of light, the same light scatters and creates a dome made of light.

"What? A barrier? Is this some kind of barrier the king gives to us?"

Sadly, what he is thinking is not what happened.

After the dome of light appears, a crystal the size of three humans put together appears from the ground. The crystal has a deep red color, the same color as blood. The crystal floated in the air and did nothing but float in the air.

The Lord of Barukan City sighs and smiles when he notices the crystal because he thinks he is right about the king preparing the barrier for him and his people. Sadly for him, what he thinks is wrong as the crystal shines brightly five minutes later is when the screaming starts.

One by one, people fall to the ground, screaming in pain as if their entire body goes through the most painful experience they ever had.

Old people, young people, and even toddlers scream in pain as the crystal shines brighter the more they scream. The stronger people near the edge of the city try to get away from the dome of light, but to their surprise, the dome of light does not let them get away.

The dome of light was not a barrier but a prison for them.

Watching from outside the city, Andreas smiles a little and crushes small orbs in his hand before suddenly appearing inside his hidden lab.

The king starts to act crazy as part of their plan, but they never thought that the king would fall into madness this fast. Lucky for him, the king’s decision to sacrifice an entire city is something his lord agrees on.

He is the one taking care of the preparation for this. People thought that his talent was related to physical enchantment, but rather his talent was called [Master Enchanter], which let him create a magic item with many effects.

He can create an item that lets him mimic the talent of physical enchantment, which is why he gets this job and rank. Andreas can also make a ring that can command a person who wears it and create a necklace that can create a massive reserve barrier, a barrier that lets people get inside but will not let them get out.

Sadly, all of them needed fuel, and he did not have a big mana reserve. He looks at the cage next to him and smiles a little at a group of humans inside the cage that are feeding him and his creation, Mana.

Souls are something really powerful. They are a thing that lets any race stay alive. Andreas already studied souls for a long time, and while he cannot make one, he can efficiently use one as fuel for his experiment.

One human soul can feed the barrier for a month before it slowly weakens and disappears in a month and a half.

Andreas shakes his head and touches the communication orb on the table. A second later, the same young man with golden hair and red eyes appears inside the orb.

"Andreas, how is the preparation? I see the crystal already erected."

"Don’t worry, my lord. The preparation is done, and now we only need to wait for the people from the North to come to Barukan City."

"Hmmm, good. However, I want to make sure to kill him. Andreas, I need you to put a few more of the device a couple of kilometers away from Barukan City."

"How big, my lord?"

"How many do you have that are ready to use?"

"I have seven of the smaller ones and three of the medium ones. They all are ready to use, my lord."

"Hmmm, use five of them ten kilometers away from the city and put the three of the medium ones three kilometers from the city after the ritual completes."

"Should I keep them running? I have a dozen ’volunteers’ I can send to feed the Void Crack."

"Yes, do that."

"Of course, my lord."

"Good. Is there anything else you want to report?"

"At the moment, there is nothing." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"Very well. Report back when you are done doing your job."

"Of course."

The orb turns to its normal color, leaving Andreas alone in his lab, deep in thought.

|Arthur Keegan Verqur - Duke of the Verqur Duchy|

"Fuck off!"

I shout while thrusting my spear at the monster coming at us. After killing the bear-like monster, I look around. It had been ten days since we arrived in the enemy territory, and I noticed the difference between the two territories.

I really need to give the Southerners credit for what they have done to the kingdom. No single monster appears on the main road and only appears deep inside the forest. Compared to this place where monsters run free without anyone killing them, I know that the South works hard to keep the kingdom’s peace.

I look to the side and also notice something.

All the so-called knights of the North are nothing but a lion without teeth and claws. They have a great mane, but they do not have the lethality of the Southern soldiers.

The Northern Knight is panting while the Southerner keeps working after the fight. They burn the corpse of the monster and butcher the one they can eat. They did not stop like the Northerners even though we were fighting the same length and maybe harder.

They fight like wild beasts. They can fight with swords, spears, axe, and even bare hands.

What kind of training did they need to have this kind of physical might? They have all of them. They have the stamina to fight all day long, the strength to punch a monster to death, the agility to run at the monster’s speed, and the endurance to take a direct hit from the monster.

I’m glad that I decided to change my decision. We cannot win against them, not in the near future. I shake my head and sit on the stone while the other is cleaning the area.

This is why I hate fighting monsters. You need to quickly burn the monster because leaving them will create a miasma that can turn a normal animal into a monster, and we did not need that.

I release a sigh and look into the distance. It should be a week or so before we reach the fortress that the Gipan Kingdom once lost. However, what with this bad feeling inside of me? It is like something will happen and not be a good thing.
