Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Counter Attack

|3rd POV|

Lord Lionheart swings his sword, intending to cut off Alexander’s head. However, before his sword can even touch Alexander’s neck, a shadow appears from Alexander’s shadow.

The being coming out of his shadow is [Mandrake], a being of shadow that protects Nature by hunting anyone who destroys nature. To summon [Mandrake], you need to reach level 195 and complete a special quest that is exclusive to [Druid].

In the game, they are a scout and guardian-type summon. They can show the enemy (be it a monster or player) on the user’s map and block any type of attack at once. Many players use [Mandrake] as their last defense to block another player’s attack to run away or to counter-attack.

However, the [Mandrake] in the real world is different. They follow the lore instead of gameplay. In the lore, they are still a guardian, but they are also one other thing. They are hunters. They hunt the enemy of nature before they can do anything to the forest they are protecting.

Not only that but in the lore, they are powerful creatures. They can even fight a dragon to a standstill and even win against some dragons.

A strike from a human with a normal iron sword is not enough to damage a [Mandrake].

"What?!"

The [Mandrake] fully emerges from Alexander’s shadow and breaks Lord Lionheart’s hand. Before he can even scream because his hand broke, [Mandrake] quickly grabs his other hand and breaks it as well. The shadow being did not stop there and broke his two legs as well, leaving him unable to move and only can feel pain.

The [Mandrake] is about to kill the man, but Alexander says something before it can do that.

"Stop. Can you not kill him and only imprison him? Make sure no one can get him out."

[Mandrake] looks at Alexander for a second and nods. The being of shadow releases a hundred tentacles made of shadow and starts to cover Lord Lionheart’s body with it.

"No! No! No! Stop! I’m sorry! I’m sorry, my lord!"

Sadly, his scream of desperation disappears into an abyss where he will stay for some time. After that, the [Mandrake] returns to Alexander’s shadow.

While this happens, the people outside the wall fight for their life. The sudden betrayal of Lord Tarrow’s force caught them off guard. However, lucky for them, Silver Wolf Mercenary was already prepared for this.

Wolfram had already ordered his men to prepare for this. When he sees Barlan and his unit move, he orders his men to the left side, and it is just in time as Barlan and his unit come. Barlan unit charges get halted by the Silver Wolf.

"Bwahahaha! I knew it! I know that this will happen! Come on, lads! We have the greatest battle!"

Wolfram shouts at his men, who start to scream in joy. When Wolfram created his mercenary company, he gathered unique individuals. They are the people whose only purpose is to fight; the more they fight, the more they feel alive.

The bigger the obstacle, the more excited they get.

Wolfram pulls the massive axe behind his back and jumps into the air. He swings down his axe at Barlan. Barlan sees the incoming attack, raises his land, and blocks the incoming attack. However, he did not expect Wolfram’s monstrous strength.

Wolfram grins as he throws Barlan away from his horse.

Barlan shakes his head, and just time to look up as he sees Wolfram charging at him. He takes a few pebbles next to him and throws them at Wolfram. He snaps his finger, and a second later, the seven pebbles explode in front of Wolfram.

However, instead of stopping, Wolfram continues to run with the same savage grin on his face. Barlan looked at him in shock as if that explosion should be able to throw him away.

This is the power of Wolfram’s talent called [Relentless Hunter]. This talent lets him select one enemy on the battlefield as his target, and as long as his target is still alive and he is fighting them, he will get buff. There are three buffs he will get from this talent. The first one is that he cannot be moved by anything other than his own will. That means he cannot be thrown by explosion, cannot be teleported, and even cannot be buried. He will move because he wants to, not because of others.

The second and third are buffs in Wolfram’s defense and strength. The longer he fights, the more powerful he gets until he kills his opponent or until they run away. However, in return, he needs to give his all in this fight, and he cannot prolong the fight.

The only weakness is that once he activates his talent, he cannot activate it once again after defeating his target. This is another reason why Wolfram always wants to fight in the front. Not only because he likes fighting on the battlefield but also getting the strongest enemy within his range so his talent can activate. When he cannot find a powerful opponent, he will target someone who will run away. That means he will go and charge the enemy commander, who he knows will run away and mark him with his talent.

He did not like using his talent like that, but he had a job and glory to attain.

So when he sees Barlan appear on the battlefield, he is excited. He sees a powerful opponent and wants to fight him.

With a roar, he swings his axe and creates a massive crater when he misses. Barlan barely gets away from Wolfram’s relentless attack. Even his men fall when they try to stop the leader of the silver wolf.

What makes matters worse, Gwyn also buffs them when the betrayal starts. Gwyn did not abandon his duty as a support even when he fought against the traitor who tried to open the gate. He kept multitasking and let Jullian, Sonia, and Jonathan defend him and keep supporting the army that was still loyal to him.

The savage fighter of the Silver Wolf mercenary group gets even more savage as their body gets stronger, and they do not need to worry about wounds as Gwyn keeps healing them. Sadly, he has his limit. He cannot heal people outside his range.

"Bwahahaha! Good! Good! Good! Keep fighting! Come! Come!"

Wolfram laughs while he is swinging his axe at the enemy. Even when the enemy surrounds him, he keeps laughing and swinging his weapon. This is the best thing for him, surrounded by an enemy and a commander who is strong enough to fight him.

Barlan, on the other hand, grits his teeth in frustration. All of his attacks did not work against Wolfram. Even his most powerful attack that he can create without preparation is not working. Wolfram keeps coming at him.

There is a secret that only a few people know about Barlan and his talent. His talent, called [Lord of Explosion], lets anything he touches explode. He can delay the explosion up to three seconds, and once that is over, the item he touches will return to normal. He can create an explosion that can destroy a wall and a bunker, but there is a requirement for this attack.

He needs time. The longer he charges, the bigger the explosion will be. He must touch the object and concentrate on making the explosion big enough to destroy a wall. He knows he can destroy Wolfram, but he needs time to concentrate, and Wolfram does not give them that precious time to charge his power.

"What are you thinking?! Fight! Fight! Fight!"

Barlan snaps from his thought and jumps away just in time to block a strong swing from Wolfram. He grits his teeth and takes his lance. He runs forward and attacks Wolfram with a flurry of thrust attacks.

He screams angrily when he sees all of his attacks get blocked by Wolfram, and when he uses his power, his attack does nothing to the axe in Wolfram’s hand. Even his most powerful attack did nothing.

He did not know that the axe in Wolfram’s hand was the one given to him by Gwyndolin as payment to protect the men on the ground. This weapon is a mid-class weapon that is dropped by a level hundred mob.

Barlan dodges another attack and thrusts his spear at Wolfram’s stomach. He pushes all his power and creates a powerful explosion. The attack is powerful enough to peel off Wolfram’s skin, and the armor he wears falls to the ground.

Barlan looks up, hoping to see his enemy is dead, but to his surprise, Wolfram still stands and grins at him. Half of his face is gone, which makes him even more fearsome.

Wolfram’s eyes land on Barlan, and he uses his hand to grip the lance that pierces through his stomach. His grin becomes laughter as Barlan tries to get his weapon out of Wolfram. He widens his eyes when Wolfram raises his axe and swings it down.

The last thing Barlan sees is an axe’s edge before darkness claims him.
