Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Gift

Before she could finish speaking, a beautiful woman with a model’s figure walked out of an office. "You’re from the Astoria Daily, right? Perfect timing. Lawson, go ahead and move the things inside."

The receptionist, Lawson, heard her and immediately came out to move the items.

Claire Sinclair felt there was nothing left for her to do, so she said, "Um, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading back now."

"Hold on, kiddo," the woman called out to her.

’Kiddo...? I can’t look that young, can I??’

Claire Sinclair looked up at the woman. "Hello. Was there something else?"

"Who’s your supervisor?"

"Teacher Hartwell."

"Ah, Hanson!" The woman reacted as if she’d just heard an old friend’s name, familiarly placing a hand on Claire’s shoulder. "Since you work for Hanson, I can’t let you leave empty-handed after coming all this way. Come with me, I have a little something for you."

Claire Sinclair felt a bit uncomfortable and awkward. "It doesn’t feel right to accept things from a client. I need to report this to Teacher Hartwell to see if I’m even allowed to take it."

The woman burst out laughing. "You really are an earnest one. Anyone else who comes to our company acts like they want to haul the whole place away, but you’re afraid to take a single thing. Go on then, hurry up and give Hanson a call."

Claire Sinclair nodded and took out her phone to call Teacher Hartwell.

After she briefly explained the situation, Henry Hartwell laughed on the other end of the line. "If she’s offering, just take it. Linda is very generous. Go ahead."

"Okay, I’ll take it then." Only after getting permission did Claire Sinclair dare to agree.

Linda led her into a clean office and handed her a plain white box that looked like it contained cosmetics.

"Kiddo, these face masks are a new product our company, M2L, just launched this year. They’re perfect for your skin type—dry. Take them and give them a try."

"This is way too much..." Claire Sinclair had never accepted so many things from someone before and felt truly awkward.

Linda laughed. "You’re so earnest. If you think it’s too much, just share it with your coworkers. But I’d recommend keeping them for yourself. Just give a few to Hanson, and that’s it. Go on, head back."

"Thank you, Linda."

Claire Sinclair thanked her again, cradled the box in her arms, and turned to leave.

To save money, Claire Sinclair took the subway back.

After getting out of the subway station, she bought a pastry from a roadside vendor to tide herself over.

By the time she returned to the Astoria Daily Press, it was exactly two o’clock in the afternoon.

Seeing the M2L box in her arms, nearly every woman in the office’s eyes lit up, and they stared fixedly at it.

"Claire Sinclair, did you get a gift from M2L?"

"Is it face masks?"

Claire Sinclair paused for a moment, looking at the box in her arms. "Linda gave them to me. I think they’re face masks."

"Whoa, M2L really did launch a new product! I absolutely love their face masks!"

Claire Sinclair got the hint. She put the box on the floor and started opening it. "I don’t really use face masks," she said. "Linda told me to share them so you could all try them. Does anyone want some? You can have them."

"Me, me, me, me!"

"Me too!"

"I love M2L’s masks too."

Claire Sinclair opened the box, set one pack aside for Teacher Hartwell, and handed out the rest to her female colleagues.

Although the box looked large, there wasn’t actually that much inside.

She handed one box to each of her colleagues, but by the time she got to Phoebe Lockwood, she had run out.

Claire Sinclair said apologetically, "Lockwood, I’m so sorry. I just ran out."

Phoebe Lockwood glanced at the box on Claire’s desk and said coolly, "Isn’t there one more right there?"
