Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Threatened

The slightly heavyset man nodded. "Feel free to ask any questions you have."

Claire Sinclair looked at the man and asked politely, "May I have your name and your position here at Astoria Daily?"

"I’m Henry Hartwell, editor-in-chief of the Astoria Daily."

"Hello, Editor Hartwell. And the lady beside you, may I know her name and position as well?"

"I’m Joy King, from the marketing department."

"Hello, Miss Golding. And next to you is...?"

Claire Sinclair went through and greeted everyone sitting in the first row one by one. Just as she was about to start on the second row, the room suddenly erupted in enthusiastic applause.

The sudden applause startled Claire.

’What’s going on?’

Once the applause died down, Henry Hartwell said with a smile, "Claire Sinclair, congratulations. You’ve passed our interview."

"Huh???" Claire’s mind went blank. ’This isn’t how I thought this would go at all!’

Joy King, sitting beside him, chuckled. "Here’s what was happening: we arranged for all these people to be here to test the applicants’ adaptability and personal bearing. You meet our paper’s requirements perfectly. Congratulations!"

"Oh..." ’That was a slick move.’

And just like that, Claire had passed the interview, much to her own surprise.

After leaving the interview room, Claire returned to the reception area. She was told to wait for the other applicants to finish, as there were still matters to discuss.

Seeing Claire return and take a seat instead of leaving, Phoebe Lockwood asked in surprise, "You passed the interview?"

Claire remembered Phoebe’s earlier jabs and didn’t really want to talk to her, but she still gave a polite reply. "I suppose so."

Phoebe pressed her eagerly, "Was it hard? What did they ask you?"

"Well... you’ll find out in a minute. It’s hard to explain."

Rebuffed, Phoebe’s face immediately darkened. "Fine, don’t tell me. It’s not like it’s a big deal."

The words had barely left her mouth when Holloway appeared again. "Phoebe Lockwood, please come with me."

Phoebe Lockwood followed Holloway with her nose in the air, shooting Claire an arrogant glare before she left.

Claire couldn’t be bothered with such a stuck-up woman. She pulled out her phone to share the good news with a certain someone. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Claire: Mr. Quincy, I think I passed the interview...

Adrian: Mm

And that was it.

Claire put her phone away, a wave of disappointment washing over her.

It was the first time she’d passed such an important interview, yet she had no one to share the news with. ’To have lived this long and still be in this position,’ she thought, ’what a failure.’

A few minutes later, Phoebe Lockwood returned, her face stony. She didn’t even glance at Claire as she began to pack her bag and pull out her phone to make a call.

"Dad, who told you the Astoria Daily was the best paper in Country H? The people here are nuts! It was supposed to be *my* interview, but the room was full of people just making a racket. I asked them what was going on, and nobody paid any attention to me. No one has *ever* dared to treat me like that!"

Hearing how furious his precious daughter was, the person on the other end of the line got angry too. "Sweetheart, did they bully you?"

Phoebe’s tone instantly switched to a whine. "Dad~ I don’t care, I *want* to work there! I’ll make them learn just whose daughter it was that they ignored today!"

"Alright, alright, sweetie. Dad will call the Astoria Daily right now. Don’t you worry."

"Hmph!" Phoebe snorted and hung up.

Claire’s jaw nearly hit the floor as she watched the scene unfold.
