I Married the President-Chapter 61: Remembered Some Things
"When he was angry or blackout drunk, he would take it out on me. He never held back. If it hurt too much, I’d go to the hospital by myself and ask a nurse to help me with the ointment."
"What about your sister?"
"Before my sister left for the army, she always took the beatings for me."
"Your sister was very dependable."
"Of course! My sister is the best person in the world!"
Speaking of her sister, Claire Sinclair felt incredibly proud.
Adrian Quincy felt a pang of guilt. He said in a low voice, "I didn’t marry you just for your sister’s sake. I had my own selfish reasons."
"I know. You’re so in love with my sister, you must want me to be her replacement. Well, I won’t be, so you can just forget about it."
At her words, Adrian Quincy froze.
"Where did you get the idea that I’m in love with your sister?"
"When my sister wrote to me, all she wrote about was you and her. I asked her if she liked you, and she said yes. She even said that if she ever got married, it would be to a man like you."
Adrian Quincy’s expression faltered. For a moment, he was at a loss for words.
’So Quinn liked me...’
When the man suddenly went still, Claire Sinclair snuck a glance back, only to find him staring into space. "Mr. Quincy, what’s wrong?"
"It’s nothing. I was just thinking about something."
’He must be thinking about my sister...’
Claire Sinclair didn’t dare ask, afraid of upsetting him, so she quietly changed the subject. "What’s going to happen to my dad?"
"The judge will determine his sentence according to the law. It’s not my decision."
"And Melanie Sinclair and the others?"
"If they weren’t involved in last night’s kidnapping, they’ll be released after giving their statements tonight." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
"Oh..." Claire Sinclair sounded a little disappointed. ’I thought they’d be locked up for longer. It’s no fun that they’re getting out so soon.’
Silence fell between them as Adrian Quincy continued to tend to her wounds.
Claire Sinclair bit back the pain, her eyes darting about. She wanted to say something but didn’t know what.
After some time, the man finally finished treating the wounds on her back. "Put your clothes back on."
He waited a moment, but the girl didn’t respond.
Adrian Quincy frowned slightly. Leaning forward to get a better look, he realized she had fallen asleep.
’She fell asleep sitting up? She must have been exhausted.’
...
In a daze, Claire Sinclair vaguely sensed her body being lifted into the air. It wasn’t until her back met the soft sheets of the bed that she snapped back to reality, her eyes flying open.
Her gaze met the man’s deep eyes, and she instantly found herself drowning in their gentle depths, with no hope of escape.
Adrian Quincy gently laid her down on the bed and pulled the covers over her. Out of the corner of his eye, he was drawn to the messy pile of clothes on the bed.
A pile of old clothes was scattered across the bed, and the closet door was hanging open.
Being as sharp as he was, it was easy for him to guess what had happened. He looked down at the girl’s drowsy, misty eyes. "You have an interview tomorrow. You should get some sleep."
"Are you leaving?"
Adrian Quincy nodded.
Claire Sinclair closed her eyes, hiding her disappointment. "Good night," she mumbled.
Adrian Quincy quietly walked to the other side of the bed and began gathering the scattered clothes. He set aside a few pieces that were old and drab, then hung the rest back in the closet.
Hearing the sounds, Claire Sinclair couldn’t help but open her eyes to watch him.
Her face flushed when she saw him tidying her clothes. "Uh, I can get that myself!"
"All done. Go to sleep." With that, Adrian Quincy closed the closet door.
Claire Sinclair glanced at the old clothes he had tossed aside. ’What about that pile...?’
