I Married the President-Chapter 58: A Guilty Conscience Gives Itself Away
Aiden Howkins’s confidence faltered. He said in a low voice, "It’s a long story. I think it would be better to report to you when we get back."
Adrian Quincy said nothing more and walked toward the doorway of the wide-open room, just in time to hear the girl muttering to herself.
"Mom, don’t you worry. Even though he’s a bit intimidating, he’s a true gentleman and has been very kind to me. I believe the man my sister protected with her life has to be a good person. I’ll watch over him, just like she did."
As she spoke, the girl held her waist and struggled to bend down to kowtow.
Seeing her trembling body, a bloodthirsty chill flashed in Adrian Quincy’s eyes. His thin lips parted. "Didn’t I tell you to wait for me?"
The sudden male baritone breaking the silence made Claire Sinclair jump. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Slowly, she turned her head. Seeing his approaching figure, she felt intimidated by his overwhelming, kingly aura. A twinge of guilt pricked at her. "You’re so busy... I just wanted to grab my things and leave. I didn’t want to waste your time."
Adrian Quincy reached her side. Just as he was about to help her up, his gaze was suddenly drawn to a fresh wound on the back of her hand. He abruptly crouched down and took her hand in his.
"What happened?"
"It’s nothing." Claire Sinclair wasn’t used to being touched by men. Even though she and this man had been intimate several times, she instinctively pulled her hand back.
Adrian Quincy’s cold eyes narrowed. "Were you hit again?"
Claire Sinclair hung her head, not answering.
The old saying warns against airing one’s dirty laundry in public, and she didn’t want to embarrass herself in front of such a righteous man.
Holding her waist, she struggled to her feet and walked toward her mother’s memorial tablet.
If her waist hadn’t been injured, she could have easily taken her mother’s memorial tablet. But as it was, she couldn’t straighten her back and failed to reach it after several attempts.
Then, a domineering male presence enveloped her. A large, cool, well-defined hand reached out from behind, elegantly taking down the memorial tablet before handing it to her.
Claire Sinclair immediately hugged the memorial tablet to her chest and said gratefully, "Thank you."
Adrian Quincy didn’t speak, his gaze falling on her hunched posture. "What’s wrong with your waist?"
"It’s nothing." Claire Sinclair was still unwilling to talk about it.
As the two of them walked out of the room, Aiden Howkins immediately spoke up.
"Young Master Quincy, the Young Madam took two hits. I suspect she’s not lightly injured."
Adrian Quincy turned to look at the girl’s stubborn, pretty face, and anger flared within him.
’Stupid woman. Her body is so fragile, yet her temper is as stubborn as her sister’s.’
Claire Sinclair shot Aiden Howkins a wide-eyed glare, her expression screaming, ’You talk too much!’
Aiden Howkins, unfazed, simply offered a handsome smile in return. He had to report certain things truthfully; it was protocol.
Adrian Quincy had suspected what had happened the moment he’d walked in, and Aiden Howkins’s report only confirmed it. He said impassively, "Take him back and punish him as he deserves."
"Yes, sir!" Aiden Howkins gave a military salute, walked over to Peter Sinclair, and roughly dragged the man to his feet.
Claire Sinclair didn’t even spare her father a glance. Instead, she stared coldly at Mrs. Lowell and her daughter, who had been watching from the sidelines. In a cool tone, she said, "Mr. Quincy was the one who personally had Logan Linden locked up. Weren’t you two looking to plead his case? Now’s your chance."
At her words, the color drained from the faces of Mrs. Lowell and her daughter.
Mrs. Lowell was the first to react. She grabbed her daughter’s hand and dropped to her knees. "Young Master Quincy, we don’t know any Logan Linden! This has nothing to do with us, I swear! Please, see the truth of the matter!"
Melanie Sinclair was still dazed, only understanding her mother’s ploy after hearing her speak. She hastily chimed in, "Logan Linden was my sister’s boyfriend! He has nothing to do with us!"
