Chapter 112: Chapter 112: The Ghosts Behind

The shop owner and his clerk were instantly dumbfounded.

"Who... who are you people?"

"Where are you taking us?"

"Hey, who are you—"

Aiden Howkins barked, "Cut the crap. You’re coming with us!" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

And just like that, the swindlers were taken away.

Claire Sinclair nestled limply into the man’s broad, comforting embrace, clinging to him like a frightened kitten.

Adrian Quincy looked down at her face. A thousand words welled up inside him, but he couldn’t bring himself to say a single one. He simply turned and walked out of the store.

A crowd of onlookers had gathered, but none of them knew what had just happened.

Under the watchful eyes of the crowd, Claire Sinclair was led out of the electronics market by her superhero.

...

After the pair had gone, a man and a woman emerged from the stairwell diagonally across from the shop.

The man had a devilishly charming face. In comparison, the woman beside him was far plainer.

The woman said, "Orion, I don’t understand. Why are you so set on getting involved with this woman?"

A wicked smirk played on Orion Osborne’s lips. "I just want to figure out if the person who saved me all those years ago was her, or *her*."

"Then why didn’t you just ask her?"

"She already gave me the answer."

"So she’s not the one you’re looking for?"

The man chuckled. "Heh... We’ll be seeing each other again very soon."

...

Back in the car, Adrian Quincy’s expression was grim. His somber eyes stared into the girl’s timid ones, but he remained silent, not even starting the car.

His stare made Claire Sinclair’s scalp tingle. "Mr. Quincy, if you have something to say, please just say it. Don’t... don’t look at me like that."

"To act so brazenly, right here in the capital... they must have some backing. I’ll root out whoever is behind this. I won’t let you have suffered in vain," the man said in a low voice, then started the car.

Claire Sinclair stole a glance at him. Seeing his expression was still foul, she didn’t dare to say anything.

She silently lowered her head, staring at her right hand, which was red from where it had been kicked. A wave of dejection washed over her.

’I don’t know where he’s taking me, and I don’t dare to ask.’

’Right now, all I want is to go home. But I don’t dare to say that either.’

’I’m so weak. Every time I’m in danger, I’m completely helpless. He always has to be the one to save me... I’m just a burden to him. When will I ever become truly strong?’

The more she thought about it, the more inadequate she felt, and her heart ached with misery.

Before she knew it, her eyes began to well up.

’That’s strange. Why do I suddenly feel like crying?’

Flustered, Claire Sinclair quickly raised her hand to wipe the tears away.

Seeing this, Adrian Quincy silently pulled the car over to the side of the road. He turned to look at her. "Why are you crying?"

"I’m not. I just got something in my eye."

"..."

’There couldn’t be any sand in the car.’

Adrian Quincy unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned slowly toward her. He unfastened her seatbelt as well before pulling her into his arms.

He didn’t say a word, simply holding her in silence.

Feeling the warmth of his embrace, the tears Claire Sinclair had been holding back finally burst free. "I’m sorry, I caused you trouble again... *sob*..."

Adrian Quincy instinctively tightened his hold on her, his own heart aching. "Claire, I’m the one who should be sorry. I failed to keep the darkness away from you. It was my failure."

"But it’s not your fault..."

"I didn’t protect you well enough."

"No, it’s because I’m the one who’s too weak!"

"Everyone grows up. You’re just growing a little more slowly than others. That’s not weakness, and it’s nothing to feel inadequate about."

His words of comfort made Claire Sinclair feel much better. Her tears finally stopped. She pulled back from his embrace and looked up, their eyes meeting.
